4th year for me too. I know the new route wasn’t universally popular, but I quite liked riding somewhere different, especially along the Wye. Doing the burial path in the opposite direction seemed quite novel: completely different ride (i.e. more rideable climb but trickier descent).

Big thanks to the organisers and all the martials. I thought all the road crossings were well managed, and the water points were better spaced than previous years.

The Bluebell Inn in Llangurig was fine about it when we stayed there. No takeaways that I could see, and the shop had closed early that day.

    It’s true. Started this month.

Some of the runners were mad, huge distances covered. I can’t conceive how you can run 40 miles over that kind of terrain, sleep in a tent and then do a marathon the next day.

I used to think that runners were people who hadn’t learnt to ride bikes. Now realise that some people don’t need a bike.

They’re probably all too tired to reply!

Fantastic weekend! Thanks to you, Siôn and everyone else for setting up the course that really showed off such a stunning area. I think I’ll have to go back and ride around the bits I didn’t have time to visit, just to see what I missed.

To me it sounds more suitable for someone who’s already (almost) decided which bike they want to buy and now wants to get it set up perfectly. Brilliant for a customisable product like yours. I can also see the advantages for people (like me) on the cusp of two sizes, so they could find out which frame suits them best over an extended test.

If I was the customer in this scenario, I’d probably want to bring my existing bike to compare (assuming it was a similar type e.g. trail or enduro), which is not something that usually happens on a standard demo day.
Also, not having to wait around for someone to bring back the bike that you want to test would proabably be the biggest plus point of what you’re suggesting, compared to other demo days I’ve been on.

That’s a great choice of bike for your budget, and it’ll suit the type of riding you describe just fine.

In the UK, Halfords often have sales on, I suspect that’ll be the same over the water. Just depends if you’re prepared to wait to save 10% or so, or would rather be out riding now.

Does the be code stack with the clearance £10 off they are offering at the moment?

No, I did try last month, and it only accepted one code.

I meant this Summer coming, so haven’t got any useful advice to give yet, sorry. I’m sure someone else will be along shortly.

Your route’s going to be harder, no doubt. I might give it a try in the future. Let me know how you get on.

I looked at that route and decided to try the easier Caernarfon to Cardiff Bay route for my first attempt at Wales North 2 South, also this summer. How many days are you planning to do it in? Bikepacking or B&Bs?

Bump for those too busy riding to notice this first time round.

Is the track past Gorse-Fach Farm usually accessible? Or do I need to be asking someone for permission to be there?

It’s the bridleway running NW to SE past Gorse-Fach Farm that I’d like to use. Looking on Google streetview there are MOD no-entry signs where both ends meet public roads/tracks. I’m assuming there’s a chance that I won’t be able to take this route depending on the nature of the exercises on the day.

A Jobsworth Vortex Polished Aluminium Floor Pump could be had for a smidgen over £30 quid if you use the “PXNEWYEAR17” 10% off code. Max of 240psi, so should give you a bit of head room when charging the airshot up.

Thanks for the tips, sounds like I’ve gone a bit gnar on the rim selection. So would you say the 350 hubs are be likely to be any more responsive than the XTs or will they all be roughly the same?

I’m happy with the bike, it suits most of my riding. TBH it’s biggest weakness thus far has been the rider. Consequently I’m not in a huge rush to upgrade the whole bike, but will probably try a couple of demo days next year to see if there are any bikes that would suit me better.

The other thing on my mind is I’m tempted to buy a second wheel set anyway, just so I don’t have to keep swapping tyres every couple of weeks. Then I could have one set with lighter tyres for easier longer distance routes and a heavier duty set for trail centers and gnarly singletrack etc.

Ghost Kato FS7 (2015). £350ish for the new wheels. Not particularly hard to get rolling, but I haven’t got anything to compare against.

You’ve probably left it too late to apply for a clarity card now.

You’ll be able to use you current card in most ATMs, but you might want to check what fees your bank charges for foreign transactions/cash withdrawals.

It’s worth putting it on top of a layer of polystyrene (e.g. ceiling tiles). This helps prevent pressure points caused by an irregular surface, so the base will be less likely to crack when you add the weight of the water. (Just to qualify this statement – using this method my aquarium has survived 24 years and 2 house moves without cracking ).

For cleaning I’d just use warm water, a clean cloth and elbow grease. Fish are so sensitive to cleaning chemicals because they don’t have impermeable skin like us.

Just wanted to thank the organisers and all the volunteers for putting it on yesterday. Going at a slightly slower pace this year made me realise how many people had given up their (beautiful) Sunday to support the event.
And despite riding in the area a lot over the last 4 years, it still introduced me to a couple of new sections. (Although I do wonder if the burial path might be better as a descent!)

It’s not the most over-priced European city, but not the cheapest either. Seemed relatively reasonably priced last summer when the pound was a bit stronger. We had a travel card included in the hotel deal which gave free public transport anywhere in the Country. Old city is nice to mooch about, but small so you could see most of it in a day on foot. If (when) I go back I’d want to explore the surrounding area e.g. “Little Switzerland”.

That’s a tricky one. There’s a lot of fire road involved that would suit a CX bike, but I wouldn’t fancy doing the descents on the same bike. At the same time 160mm FS is overkill IMO.

If you don’t fancy the full boar, then I’d recommend the wye boar. The small and forest routes are a bit too short for my liking.
