Completely bonked 3 hours in, so those banana stops at Soudley and Christchurch were my saviour. Big thanks to all the volunteers and good to see plenty of opportunities to pick up water along the route for those that needed it.

    @trailwagger
they’ll update the webpage with a link to the photos in the next few days if previous years are anything to go by.

It’s a shame, could’ve been a cracking week if the weather held. We really seem to struggle to get events like this off the ground in this country. It seems obvious that cost was the main thing putting people off. However, neither the Cape Epic or Swiss Epic are cheap and they seem to sell out easily enough.

Last year’s course kept it on the fireroads for longer at the start which allowed the field to spread out before the singletrack sections, so there wasn’t the same bottleneck as in previous years (or if there was, I was ahead of it!). I saw one rider on a gravel bike last year, and they seemed to be struggling on one of the singletrack descents, I’m sure they were quicker everywhere else, but personally I’d rather be on a bike that is more capable on roots and rocks even if it’s slower on the road. You’ve got to keep in mind that the WBC is not a race, so you might as well enjoy the short fun sections between the mile-munching. I’ll be on a XC hardtail with fast rolling tyres. Will be treating it as a training ride this year, so say “hi” when you’re steaming past.

You can book bike spaces in advance to avoid disappointment. With it being 4 of you, it would be advisable to do so. If they don’t have enough space, at least you’ll know beforehand.

Easy, it’s the collective noun for Mamil.

I would expect a “direct buy” bike (e.g. Canyon, Intense) to come with a tool kit and shock pump. (A bit like flat pack furniture coming with an allen key).

Bike bought from a dealer should be built and setup at collection, so wouldn’t expect them then.

I wouldn’t expect tubeless valves unless specified.

    Oxford dictionary definition:
A large hairy creature resembling a human or bear, said to live in the highest part of the Himalayas.

    Origin
1930s: apparently from a term in Sherpa (a local language) that is related to Tibetan gya ‘rocky place’ + dred ‘yellow bear, hyena’.

@Drac: As yetis haven’t been described by science (meaning there isn’t an example bathing in formaldehyde somewhere), no-one can say with any certainty if they are a bear, ape, or anything else. This principle applies whether they exist or not. Until one is found and properly described we don’t know what evolutionary branch to assign it to.

    si77

Yetis are probably real, but endangered. More likely to be a species of bear than a hominid.

I doubt a large hominid like Sasquatch would have found its way to North America before Homo sapiens. And even if it was real, would most likely be extinct by now.

OP, You need to google “Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval”

    From gov.uk:

“It must be inspected under the Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval (MSVA) scheme if it does not have a Certificate of Conformity.

You must also use the MSVA scheme if your vehicle has been radically altered or built using a mixture of parts from previously registered vehicles.”

I think what you’re proposing would be classed as “radically altered”.

Loads of things you can do to avoid or reduce frequency of attacks, mostly relating to diet.

Worst triggers for me are shellfish and beef (high purine content) and bottle conditioned ale.

Other contributing factors include injury, like stubbing a toe, or dropping something on my foot.

But by far the most obvious cause, in my case is dehydration.

Basically you need to find what’s causing your’s, and either cut it out or reduce it sufficiently. Unfortunately it usually ends up being the item of food and/or drink that you’ll miss the most.
