Perhaps I should have specified: for a family member who’s not mechanically inclined.

I’ve set up a race for Saturday morning, 9am BST.

It’s the last route from the Spring into Action | Ardu challenge, Liege from Adrimont. 54km, 1045m ascent.

    All welcome.

If I win, I’ll ride it at Ard Rock and then drop it back at STW Towers on my way home, so they can raffle it again.

I wanted to do it, but it clashed with a BMBO weekend event in the Yorkshire Dales. They will clash again this year, so I’ll have the same dilemma.

I haven’t tried the amber lenses yet, but can say the clear lenses are great.

Best – Be brave! Also, take some air out of your (rock hard) tyres before you start descending (Both received at the top of the Scaletta Pass alt. 2600m)

Worst – You don’t need a dropper post.

Try it. If it’s bad, go find some sloes and bung them in with some sugar. Enjoy at Christmas.

Like that idea! Pity it didn’t cross my mind a couple of months ago.

I think it was more the issue that I’ve never seen it for sale anywhere, so started to think it could have an outside chance of being iffy. A bit of googling suggests it’s in the catering suppliers category, so I guess it will be fine.

These airbike cassettes, how are they performing?

Mine’s been good for 1000km so far.

The Honda is likely to be cheaper on insurance, based on quotes I had for Octavia, Fabia, Civic and Mazda3 a few weeks ago.

Congleton Cycle Centre let me try one on their static bike in the shop. Was enough to know it was going to work for me.

Most happened in the same week:

    – Competed in my first ultra-distance MTB event.

    – 706 km, with 15166m climbing in 5 days, 5 hours, 9 minutes (including detours for supplies etc.)

    – 273 km with 6582 m ascent in one session (day-night-day), only stopping to take on food (and open gates!!)

    – Managing to nurse an injured knee along for 4 days including a huge section of the PBW, (after very nearly quitting on day 2).

I’m going to stick with my original answer (the wheels). Would’ve opted for the Ortleib seat-pack, if I didn’t already own one (purchased via STW classifieds).

For that budget look at less desirable brands e.g. Hyundai i20. Used car market is a completely different place than 4 years ago, and 1.5k won’t go far.

app seems to be a lot more stable now

I agree on Windows as well. Also finding I don’t need to bother downloading the course videos in advance anymore.

There’s just a short time left now to enter at the “early-bird” price.

You can enter solo or as a pair (mixed or not).

Juniors (12+) can enter with an adult (classed as a generational pair, “GEN”)

    Thanks everyone!

I’ll probably go for a Griffon when back in stock.

The weather looks grim on Saturday morning, so who’s up for tackling the Grossglockner with me?

Used a Moon Nebula during the Great British Divide and that lasted all night in flashing mode.

    Bumping for the weekend crowd.

Ebikes are welcome and have their own class.

Gravel bikes also welcome, but probably not best suited to a couple of the tracks.

This event forms part of the BMBO National League as well as being the first event in the new Black Mountains MBO calendar. Or, it can be ridden as a standalone event.

If you’re new to the sport, be aware that all competitors are issued with a paper map at the start. It’s advantageous to have a way of fixing this on the handlebars. Specialist map-boards are available from retailers. However, beginners (and some experienced riders) often make their own board with clipboards, bulldog clips and cable ties etc.

@Marko there’s definitely an ebike category at the top of the dropdown category list.

Hi @welshfarmer , I find MapRun incredibly reliable. Have you tried it? I thought the last event you attended was using a different App?

@alwillis you’ll be very welcome back!

If you have any questions about MapRun let me know. Here’s a link to a quick guide: MapRun Quick Guide

It’s MapRun version 7 that you require.

Instructions will be emailed to all participants approximately 2 days before the event. These will include how to download the course. Always best to download the course in advance via WiFi or in an area with strong mobile data signal. You don’t need mobile signal during the event, only at the end to upload the final score.

Knighton and Dyfi Junction stations are at opposite ends of the Trans Cambrian Way. I’ve been  reliably informed that the route was specifically designed to be accessed by train.

I did it on a Scott Scale. If it’s the same course as 2 years ago (parts of Yr Wal), you won’t need a big bike.

Swiss Epic is fantastic. So well organised and some of the hotels (included in the fees) are more luxurious than I would ever consider staying in otherwise.

They also organise similar races in Andorra and Croatia (4 Islands), although I don’t have first-hand experience of these.

In a previous search I also found this in Italy which could be tempting: Appenninica MTB

I prefer SPDs when riding and flats when falling off. It’s similar for not wearing knee-pads vs wearing knee-pads.

In any good clinical trial 50% of participants will be on the placebo, so in this case **** no, I don’t like those odds!

I also like the Moon Nebula. Recently lasted a whole night in one of the flashing modes. I’ve also got one of the Aldi clones (Bikemate), and it’s pretty good too, but not available very often.

Many thanks @Clover That was really handy to know at 4am this morning (didn’t want to rely on google maps quoted opening times)
