No Air isn't best, a nice strong stiff frame with a low shock leverage ratio and if you can afford it, a custom damped coil shock is what would be ideal.

    I agree…

Chumba XCL with a coil 🙂

You will never break it, and it is not too heavy either!

I'm more embarassed by the twunts that 'rock-up' in a car park of a weekend, take twenty minutes or so to 'set up' their 'rigs' then go for a 'quick blast' round the 'sweet singletrack' – I'd be willing to bet that many bikes spend more annual mileage strapped to an infernal combustion machine than on the trails – a bike should be a political statement not a lifestyle accessory !!

Why should they not also be used as a recreational tool, for having fun rather than having a deep meanng political statement? or have i missed your irony?

I could spec an XCL full build for around £2.5k with some very tasty kit on it, best of both worlds, boutique frame and top kit and put together by me 🙂

    Email me for details info@progressive-bikes.co.uk

Aye the VF2 is £1599. The xcl can be had around the £1100 mark and is utterly bomb proof. 2 year warranty but if you broke it riding normal stuff I would be amazed! The xcl is a very under rated frame, proven 4 bar suspension and probably the stiffest bike I have ridden in it's class.

To be fair i think Alan was implying that CC had tuned the shock settings specific for the VF2 after running the VF2 through the linkage program that CC use, but i know he came across as telling porkies.

IMO go coil, the boost valve is OK, but coil is far better. If you can afford it go for a CCDB, or failing that a new Van coil (RC4? )will be fine.

Wheels for sure, you will notice the weight loss with improved acceleration if you choose the right wheels.

Though i am not sure i would go with the Fulcrum wheels, they seem very expensive!

I have owned a 575 and can honestly say that both the XCL and VF2 are way stiffer than the Yeti.

The XCL is super tough, but if you don't need the burleyness of the XCL (even though it is not heavy) then the VF2 is for you. It is very versatile and can run a CCDB just as well as an air can. The suspension action is very linear throughout its travel, which feels very predictable and bottomless in all situations.

If you are interested mail me and I will see what i can do for you 🙂

Have you looked at the Chumba VF2? I obviously am biased, but i believe they are one of the stiffest bikes in its class and has exceptional build quality. It is a 4 bar design similar to the Ventana too.

That looks ace, might get a VF2 custom coloured in that pink!

How do you find the Spot with a coil? Looking at the linkage path and the fact the rate becomes regressive (unless i am mistaken?) at the end of the shock does it bottom out easy?

The large VF2 would suit just you just fine, i also believe they are one of the stiffest frames in it's class.

Proper four bar too, stays active under braking. The frame is very versatile, can be built up light ish or with a coil shock and 6 inch fork for a tough trail centre Alps bike.

I am about to stick a CCDB on mine, The suspension is designed to be very linear and works really well with a coil shock like the CCDB or the RP23.

The Nicolai AC is a great frame; if you fancy one have a chat with Richard at Gravity sports in Scotland as he is the Nicolai man!

Don't forgot the Chumba Vf2 🙂 5" travel, torsionally very stiff, carbon rear end and beautifully made 😉

I must admit the lapierre's look really nice, for an off the peg bike they tick all the boxes. For me the decals look a bit over the top, but the rest of the bike looks great, very clean lines and looks a hoot! Still, would rather ride an alloy one 🙂
