    Have we done this

    I certainly have not!

Or does one first year undergrad know more than the rest of the worlds energy scientists put together?

Probably knows more than you about the subject though eh?

Jeremy, since a major part of what I do is study cheap energy alternatives, I can fairly comfortably say that, despite prices going up, we will have reasonably affordable energy. It just won’t be carbon based

    Amen!

    Beneath contempt. Ignorant, stupid, selfish

    lol

This a good debate. I really don’t see how this is going to change, people will still use their cars until they can not afford to do so, simple. When that happens then people will look for alternatives, which means the world will catch on and invent/produce something cheaper. We won’t suddenly regress in to a world where everyone walks to work, or uses a non existent and financially unviable public transport system.

How do you think all those nice shiny bike parts are delivered? Will everyone accept that the price of bike parts, in fact everything not produced in the UK, will have to go up due to the massive rise in cost of transportation? It may mean we are riding around on £5K Orange 5’s after a nice long walk to pick it up from Halifax 🙂
I will bet £10 that in £50 years time the cost of personal transport will still be mainly affordable after all the magical oil has gone 🙂

First step for me would be to introduce a tax break for companies and individuals who work at home.

I don’t think tax incentives work, ut it might be part of the solutuion.

IMO we will all use cars until they are too expensive to do so and or a viable alternative is found. A viable alternative won’t be easily available until oil use starts to slow.

    wanna bet?

I’ll wager that we don’t go back to how it was in the 50’s and that we find an alternative given time, and it wont be public transport

    si-wilson

Public transport needs to be run as a public service rather then a profit generating business, before the personal car can be disposed of.

It would still never be sustainable to supply good public transport to the whole of the UK. The only real answer is alternative fuel vehicles for the masses.

you still don’t see it. over a generation – attitudes change – think of the difference between transport in the 50s and now

Again, what rubbish, in the 50’s would you have been sayng that we should stick to the horse and cart?

    si-wilson

Molgrips – yes easily but it would take a generation or more to make the shift – it cannot be done overnight. It took us 60 years to get here from a situation where most folk lived within easy reach of their work to the mass commuting now.

things are sooo different now, and we could never go back to how it was. Work practices have evolved and changed. A lot of people have jobs BECAUSE of cars.

TJ, you talk about choice, its not always about choice and never as clear cut as how you make out. For some reason the stance you take on this subject winds me up.

10% of those killed in the First World War were civilians.

90% of those killed in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan have been civilians.

So different though eh? If the iraq war was fought like most of ww1 & 2 then i could see the point, but it wasnt sadly.

what was SP competing with back then though? URT’s

kinda my point, was single pivot then called all hype and marketing becasue it was the next big thing? Some people would argue that SP doesn’t work for them, i like SP so does Al, but thats not to say innovation is not needed.

There is a point to be made about bike design just for the sake, all the head set standards do my head in, as do things like press fit BB, pro pedal shocks etc but it would be a boring industry if we always stood still.

It is amazing how SC can sell the Heckler for £899, its a lot of frame for the money, and to me looks as good quality as the 5.

It seems strange how you dont feel that way about single pivot though? Or did marketing not exist when they were designed? It seems a little odd how they arrived at FS nirvana at the first attempt.

    Sorry, not buying it

What you not buying? Are you saying that single pivots are good enough for most people and that’s that?

It sounds to me like you are saying that all other suspension types are just hype, was that not said about single pivots from hardtail riders for a long time? I think its called progression and innovation, and then marketing to sell the ideas, though i do understand you are a cynical type 🙂

I like to think I’m upfront about who and what i do, though i do appreciate i can get on some peoples nerves (you know who you are) 🙂

For me, i know this place would not be as rich a place for info if it was not for people like Brant, Cy, Sam etc.

    We’re actually using coals2u (sp?)

is a company called CPL Distribution. My dad supplies logs, and fuels all over the UK, he is probably the largest supplier of netted logs in the UK now, supplying CPL et al with most of their logs.

If you think you are buying seasoned logs now, your not, they have all gone (most anyway). If you buy Ash, that will burn pretty well from near fresh.

He buys a lot of timber from FSC sites and tells me we are in for a big shock the next few years, as timber, especially hardwood is in very short supply. This season alone some people are paying double what they were at the start of the season for hardwood, even fresh cut stuff.

Taybrite is a good fuel, as is Stoveheat for closed stoves. House coal is very dirty and too expensive at £8 per bag 🙂

I measured static, cos that’s the way I prefer. Actually I don’t mind how they are measured as long as everyone does the same and understands what it means.

It’s interesting, Brodie say the ti holeshit s slack with a 67.5 static ha, chumba say their 68 ha hard tail is neutral, when in reality there is not much between the two all things considered.

    si-wilson

Is 68 HA slack? I was thinking that most people who have slack HA bikes would be in the region of 66-67, i know its only 1 degree, but most trail type frames have a 68 HA anyway, and are often not called slack?

I have noticed the semi integrated cups are pretty tight, but not tight enough where it wont go in, just that it tends to pinch the bearings a little.

si, big tyre/front mech thing sorted?

Ton, the ST has been tweaked slightly, but to be honest as with most 29ers with really wide rims and wide tyres there won’t be a huge mount of clearance.

loco, The One will be available around March.

A medium frame will be around 3.75Lb without EBB, around 150g more with EBB.
