I bought my 1st set of Thule Wingbars last month. To keep costs down (bars, foot packs, and bike carriers) I went for 532’s as I needed 4 carriers. I used them for the 1st time last weekend and I drove for 5 and half hours to Coed y Brenin. I have to say I am very impressed with Thule.

Although paranoia has now set in, as all 4 carriers are still on the car, which is a free advert for bike thieves – “Look 4 carriers on the car, they must have some in the garage” .

I don’t fancy having to fit them every-time, I want to pop somewhere but by the same token, I don’t really want to highlight that bikes may be in the garage.

I’m damned if a do and damned if I don’t.

I sold my 3GS recently and replaced it with the 5. Tbh I wouldn’t bother with the 3gs if I was you. It’s really slow, I found it very frustrating towards the end.

My wife just ordered a 5 last night, to replace her 3 year old 3GS for that very reason. Just opening an app or going back to the home button would take an age. I recently did a hard reset but that made no difference. I guess the processor is beyond its best?

Surely that would need road tax and a MOT?

Depending on where you are staying, you could head up the M3 to Swinley. Probably about an hours drive.

We’ve been offered 2 rooms on a late deal package – same hotel, which has turned out to be nearly £400 cheaper than the original holiday.

    That sounds Iike a WIN/WIN. Ca-Ching – £400 spending money

I would have accepted the two rooms. You could have then assessed the situation once you arrived. If the rooms werent next to each other you could have all bunked in the same room, as I doubt the hotel would have even realised (Although one of you would have ended up on a sofa).

I watched the 1st episode of “The Americans” last night which started on ITV last Saturday.

Set during the Cold War period in the 1980s, The Americans is the story of two Soviet KGB officers posing as an married American couple, living in Washington D.C. and spying on the USA.

Although there has only been one episode, it looks like it has potential and it has already been renewed for a 2nd series.

I’m surprised nobody else has recommended it but I’d also suggest “Homeland”.

I rode past this last summer. South of Basingstoke inbetween Farleigh Wallop, Dummer and Preston Candover. It looks very basic but seems to get okay reviews. Lots of bridleways and byways nearby but not much else.

In August 2003 (You remember that hot summer) I was removing a stud wall in between two of the bedrooms. The plaster board came off okay and I then started to dismantle the frame. I was pulling out nails with a claw hammer and as I pulled one, the hammer came flying at me and hit me just above the eye. I felt okay and continued. Now remember it was very hot and I was continually mopping my face. I thought I was sweating and it wasn’t until half an hour later when my wife popped in and asked me why I was covered in blood. The t-shirt I was wearing was blood red but I was so engrossed in the task that I hadn’t noticed. I ended up going straight to A&E for stitches.

Selling over 1 million BSO’s a year, Halfords said it sees good opportunities for growth in the cycle market.

Unfortunately and I am generalising here, I think most STW forum members are unlikely to buy their next bike from Halfords. My nearest store is less than a mile away and I’ve lost count on the number of times I’ve popped in to pick up, lube, degreaser or other small consumables. I’ve lost count on the number of times they don’t have the items I want in stock! Once i needed a rear shifter cable which they didn’t have in stock! Surely this should be one if their core service products!

They also occasionally have offers on GT85 (£2.49 a can) if I buy any other cycling item, but for some reason their tills don’t recognise the offer and unless you flag it, the till charges the full price!

My local store also seems to have numerous donor bikes on display. Many seem to be missing key components (shifters, callipers, seats, mechs, grips etc). If you take something off a display bike for a customer, take the bike off display until the part has been replaced!

I know they do sell a handful of decent bikes but unfortunately most or their bikes are BSO’s built on visual appearance over function. I believe their main target audience will be mum and dad’s buying their kids highly overpriced and then highly discounted Apollo or Trak bikes because they don’t know any different.

And I can’t see that changing now or ever.

So is Labyrinth haunted? Every time I have ridden their (on my own) I can clearly hear other riders close by. But they never appear. Last week, their voices made them feel very close and I felt that they were about to fly past me at any moment. I waited for several minutes at the end and then kept looking back from the FR – no one.

I agree, although I’ve not heard the voices, but I have heard the Hope Hub ghosts. You hear the hubs but never see the bikes or riders! Labyrinth the ghostly Singletrack 😉

I went to Swinley this morning. I got there early to miss the crowds and rode the blue, red and green. Swinley seems to be a bit of a magnet at the moment and by the time I got back to the end of the blue the place was packed and I mean packed!. I saw Strava KOM warriors, familys, beginners, all the gear no idea riders, BSO riders, groups of blokes, groups of girls, couples, wide boys in track suits, fat blokes, fit girls and loads of kids. I pulled over for some riders, other riders pulled over for me. Everybody seemed to be enjoying the new trails and most were having fun. I saw young kids finishing the green and asking their parents if they could go again?

Yes it can get busy (i followed a girl/lady on a hybrid through Blue 1 and 2 – whats the rush?) but Swinley seems to have got it right and from what I saw this morning, I think the next generation of riders are being groomed by the Swinley Trails! Just when I thought road riding was going to take over the world, Swinley has made me realise that there is a future for mountain bikes.

    To back up Danny’s statements

Soaring claims from personal injuries such as whiplash has meant the UK motor insurance market hasn’t made an underwriting profit for about 15 years and relies on other income, such as investment returns, according to the Association of British Insurers.

There are two types of cover

    1) Return to invoice – this pays the difference between the insurance payout and the original invoice price
    2) Settlement Shortfall – this pays out only if the insurance payout is less than the finance settlement figure.

Most dealers will offer Return to Invoice – there really isn’t any difference in price between the two products but Return to Invoice is the product to have.

With regard the price, £500 is too much. Tell the dealer you like the idea and have a haggle. You could get it as cheap as £200-£250. The dealer needs to sell them and as long as they make profit you could get it cheaply.

Word of warning – if you do buy off the Internet you aren’t always getting the same level of cover, so check the small print. The products sold in dealers are normally provided by the big insurance companies but the Internet is littered with companies nobody has every heard of.

^ What Jordie said – I sold them a car in 2011 and I described every dent, stone chip, kerbed alloy etc. I got £5600, which is what i was quoted online, where as a dealer were offering £5500 in part exchange.

The problem is that lots of people describe their car as if it is brand new and are then disappointed when they get £100’s or £1000’s knocked off

In truth if you haggle you are always likely to get more in px at a dealer, especially if it is something they could then re-sell.

My want: Well it doesn’t actually exist at the moment, but Cy was rumoured to be looking at 120mm Rocket. If it does make it into production, I’ll be buying one. In the meantime here is a 160mm Rocket.

    What about one of these?

29er, upgradable, not overly expensive, ideal for disused railway lines and the kids versions seem highly rated by the Singletrack audience? From memory WMB awarded this the best entry level MTB.

I would suspect that the 12″ Hotrock will be too small for your daughter. My daughter got one for her 3rd birthday but by the time she was 4 and a half, it looked like a clowns bike and her knees were all over the place. My daughter isn’t tall for her age (5 last week and 110cm) but we bought her a 20″ Benin Small to replace the Hotrock.

However if the Hotrock is cheap enough, it might be worth a punt as you could always sell it on again in 6 months/1 year.

I’m 5’8″ with short legs and ride a small Soul. For the last 18 months, I’ve ridden with a 75mm stem, which in all honesty made the bike too small. I recently added at 16mm setback seat post and a 90mm stem and I seem to fit perfectly now.

I guess the 75mm stem on the medium, will probably fit you fine.

The problem with the Daily Mail is that they are the 2nd most popular paper in the UK.

    1) The Sun 2,165,605
    2) Daily Mail 1,594,421 (2.4m on a Sunday)
    3) Daily Mirror 953,422

Nobody I know admits to reading the Mail (expect my parents) but obviously 1.5m people buy the paper and I’m guessing 3.0m probably read it. Whilst they continue to sell in those numbers they will continue to publish absolute s***!

If the Sun couldn’t be brought down by Hillsborough and the phone tapping scandals, I don’t see anyway the Daily Mail will ever be brought down. Certainly not until all the Baby Boomers die (This is a sweeping generalisation on my part that the Baby Boomers are loyal Mail readers).

The only worrying thing is that the sign at the start, mentions the Blue is suitable for beginners. I would say that you need to be a confident and competent rider to tackle the Blue.

Correction update: Having looked at a photo I took at the start, it states that the trail is “Intermediate” and not “Beginner”, as I previously stated.

I went to Swinley today for the 1st time since September and and rode the new Blue Trail. It wasn’t that busy and I liked the Blue. The only bits that are recognisable were the Whole Nine Yards and Stickler. Overall I was fairly pleased. It’s not a sterile as I thought it would be.

Having just Googled it, the 1st point I’d raise is that she ain’t a looker! She won’t be the next Jordan.

Secondly how do you go from a 32 inch chest to 36? I thought the chest size was measured below the boobs, so surely having implants will effect the cup size but surely it wont effect the chest size? Or have I got this wrong?
