Oh – i thought this was going to be one of those threads where you had a great idea to knock out Guinea pigs with a sedative, then mail them special delivery to yourself with insurance cover of £150 then once the guinea pig awakes and knaws its way from the pakaging in a sorting office somewhere and a few days later the obviously damaged and empty pacel arrives to your adress you claim on the postal insurance. So it’s not one of those threads then? I’ll just be off to feed some valium to my own rodent then – good luck with your plan, mine sounds more scientific.

As turni[ says – white smoke is actually steam – head gasget – check the oil the filla cap, if it’s emulsified (gone white and gooey) then more than probably the head gasket – about 300=400 notes at a garage – about 50 notes if you do it yourself – pretty easy job if your handy.

Seen about 4 or 5 broken handjobs from my time in bike shops – usually the result of an impact – the first ones were highly butted making them lovely and sringy but with kind of a built in crumple zone. Are cove still doing a crash replacement thing?

Argh the armchair engineers are all here today.

Nothing wrong with carbon. Perfectly strong enough.

Advice would be to try before making judgements.

No one’s really quoted anything engineery, just opinions and observations – and a bit of fact, which is what is also going to sway folks opinions when purchasing your frame should you wish to trade it in or flog it. People see titanium, steel and alloy as more durable and quite rightly so, as carbon isn’t as tried and tested – so it’s important when considering a purchase.

The problem with CF failing is that it does so without any warning (no visible cracks etc) and does so in an instant – i admit CF bars are highly unlikely to break (unlike very light alloy ones) however a CF frame, although unlikely to break will have re-sale issues due to the nature of the how logevity is asessed.

Hincapie’s steerer was an alloy one from a commuter bike! still on the whole i agree with you.

CF is used in road bikes and crashes there can often be far worse than anything a mountain bike will see

indeed again! and replace in a pro race immediatly or straight after the finish and scrapped – not used again and again and then put on ebay or traded in at the local bike shop.

I would not use my road bike again after a heavy crash – and that’s a 2.2K frame. I could earn that in a month, but not from a wheel chair.

“”I’ve never seen an F1 car crash due to sudden inexplicable CF failure””

Indeed, but then you won’t see an F1 care drive off carefree after a brush with a tyre wall either – carbon fibre is deisned to work within its given parameters of stress – a MTB crash for example can’t be realistically judged or accounted for in terms of imposed stress on the carbon, so damage to the integratory of the frame can be caused – maybe without visible signs.

A plastic bike – ridden in rocks?!?! bad idea. (in my opinion)

i’ve an R3 sl – which is a very very nice bike – basically the same as the R3 but a little lighter with a 27.2mm seat post instead of the 31.8 (i think?!?) on the standard R3. If i were to be buying one for say sportives or training i’d get the RS – a bit less racy.

I had some ‘deep muscle massage’ from a physio – in the hip/butt area, and she streched out the hip on later visits, she said i had a lot of scare tissue and knots in the muscle around the hip area, it felt great afterwards, the best it had felt in over 10 years, that was a year ago but now it’s just as bad as before, so i’m thinking a misalignment somewhere maybe contributing to an ongoing problem.

I’ve got medical insurance, so i might see if i can claim with that, worth a shot i suppose.

The Pegoretti Luigino is stunning – the only thing i’d change is that Triple – if you need a triple you are probably too fat and detract from the aesthetics of the frame whilst riding it, especially as you gut may rub on the top tube and mark the paint.

Should be fine – i’ve run shimano road BB’s with Mega exo cranks as well as the crummy FSA ones – so hopes, if they work with shitmano cranks work fine!

Only really defunct Saunier Duval (however it’s spelt) had more than two in the end of mountain stages thou – although, yes his team was poor. I just can’t see Evans winning – not this year.

i’d say from time working in bike shops an alloy hard tail – about 4/5 years.

full Sus (off the shelf frame i.e. specilized epic etc) about 3/4 years

full sus (boutique ie turner, ellsworth, litespeed etc) 5/7 years – they do no matter what ever folk say tend to last longer as bushing/bearings/finish are better and also they tend to not change colour/design/geometry every season.

steel hardtail or steel road – considered ‘old’ about 5+ years – but not considered ‘worn’ as such if originally of good qaulity (generally not included in this is cheaply fabricated stuff) for examply an old rocky mountain blizzard will be considered desirably compared to a similar age steel specilized etc, usually also the geometry of the canadian stuff and also kona’s gives it more value, as it tends to be considered more modern.

it’s pretty tricky – ‘old’ is an odd concept very subjective.
