    Dave, we’re both wrong.
I had it ID’d by the NE bat group as a Natterer’s bat.
I even had it named that on the file name, so no excuse for calling it a Noctule.

I was thinking the same Jef.
Is the idiots who purchased them without proof of them being fit for purpose being investigated too?

Some thing is very suspect about it all, or those involved are TAF

    Very good all things considered.
My only bat image is this hibernating Noctual which was moving considerably slower.

I’ll have a proper look tomorrow once i’ve laid some turf up there in the forest and cleared all the tape and associated gubbin’s from today. I also need to plan several potential routes for a proposed Quantocks Quake. A Exmoor Explorer styled event for July. Using more of Heath and combes.

Pics i can’t put up here, unless i’ve hosted them on FB as i don’t used other hosting sites at present. But anything can be mailed over.

But now, i’m orf to bed.

Hellooo, likewise great to see you out of brizzle.
You’re only over the hill from me tonight, i walked to Spaxton last Sat night across the fields, only takes 20mins, incuding of camber, mudfest paths.. Hmmm! Familiar?

I’ve got various pics of random riders and HS vids of random riders goooing ssssllllooooowly and flicking mud sllloooowly about. So if any riders want to know if i’ve got them. Ask yeer.

I think Dropoff had to run away from lots of riders.

Glad you enjoyed it Burchy. Though it was pretty much like Haldon’s slickest and you can mince round them pretty well.

    I said you should’ve ss it. 😉

Pooley. It might need Bench cutting a bit now and then continued assault on the Rhoddies. You could always go straight on down the the back of the FC hut, but that’s a touch straight and featureless. 😉

I took some high speed low res videos. And a couple pics in stage 5.

Stage one. As i said, the little used run from the top gate, to the bottom of car wash(there abouts)
Stage two. What we made, but the top was sightly altered due to forestry work last year. Timed right to the end by the chinmey.(They then pushed up the chimney lol)
Stage three. Pretty much from the Slades down to the bottom of the Triscombe DH trails. The most direct route from the grass push up i think.
Stage four. From the top of Slade down the forest track and snaggle tooth.
Stage five. What i call Sam’s track(where you lost your tools) from top to bottom, bottom section was ssssslick!

Jambo. Duncan cleared Snaggle tooth, with i think a slight alteration due to it being near a monument.(An ancient settlement site near the top). But imagine 100 odd riders slipping down it’s of camber course. As you can imagine it got interesting. They also brought back the trail that comes out near the bottom of ‘car wash’. Starting at the gate at the top, drop through the trees, across the forest road and down, with a slight detour to avoid the bottom of DWD(another protected area).

From there they hauled up the forest road opp the bottom of car wash, looping around to drag up the sloppiest of trails, eventually dropping down to Davids Well. You know, the trail that i went OTB on the night ride when we first rode together. At least that’s my understanding of the route.

iridebikes. The area of stage 3 has around 40 DH runs, giving loads of options. For xc, it’s best to clear off out of the forest and head north of the top of stage 1.

I found the Declaration forms at registration kept blowing away, that was a tad annoying. Other than that it all seemed fun.

General feedback was a usual mix of hate/love.
I think the terrain caught a lot of riders out with it’s technical level on the timed stages.
Section 4 wasn’t rated, but old snaggletooth hasn’t been ridden in years and to be honest, i think it added some old school ride a stoopid trail for giggles to to event. Then again, i’ve not seen the state of it after 100+ riders. I’ll see it tomorrow whilst clearing the route of tape and signage.

The results are being tallied up through the night and will then be passed onto HQ to be uploaded to the main site.

Lets hope the FC can see these events are a good thing and lets many more events to be run over the coming years.

This one because i lay on the wet ground for an hour to get it. The bird actually turned up after 20 mins, but perched just out of view for 40mins, and then when i did appear for me, it was on the other bank further than i wished for.

And this one, as it was during a rather drafty day, not ideal for capturing birds on frail plants.

Not so much scary, but certainly a story.

Several years back, i went out late one Sunday afternoon during my brief window of riding Allowance and hit the trails.
And headed over to tame a certain trail on the Quantocks. I’d on’y ridden it in a group before so speed was governed by the group and i wanted to ride it faster then usual. Unhindered by a group, plus i didn’t have long out.

Well, off i charged down the trail, i knew there was a section that needed concentration on, it was an erosion gully that needed crossing followed by a rooty step down, speed would’ve made the step smoother..

As i slipped across the gully at speed, the front wheel washed out on the off camber exit dumping me into the narrow and deepish gully and in a split second a pedal strike, of crank arm snag, stalled the momentum, pitching my weight forward and over i went, sailing through the air.
I came to a halt against an embankment, baked hard by the summer sun(it was back in 2005/06. I impacted right on my shoulder and as i came to rest, the bike cartwheeled over me to rest nearby.

First thoughts were naturally one of shock and pain and i shifted to standing and began to assess the damage.

The gear cable outer had bust and my Oakleys lay undamaged on the floor. Then i assessed myself.

First off i knew i’d slammed my shoulder hard, i could move it with little more than an ache, but the raised lump was a clear injury, but not a major concern.
My breathing however was a concern, short of breath, shallow too. I immediately thought ribs. So i felt around the rib cage for heat, swelling, soreness but nothing appeared to suggest a fractured rib. But i knew it wasn’t good and i’d need medical assistance.

The next problem was how. I could’ve gone deeper into the combe and down to the village and asked for assistance, or back up to the heath were i knew i could get a signal and call for an Ambulance.

I decided up would be quicker and safer, so i collected my stuff and wheezed my way to higher ground. It was hard going, i could barely take on air. I’d check my phone for a signal and after around 30mins i had a signal.

    999. I requested an Ambulance and was asked for my postcode. Erm, i’m in the middle of the Quantocks, and haven’t a postcode. But i do have a OS mapped, embedded into my head. So i’ll tell you exactly where i am and where i’ll meet the ambulance and which route i’ll be taking to get there. And i talked her through to my location. Explaining the injury and my suspisions that i’d popped a lung. I went ahead to wait for them to turn up.
A further 20-30mins of wheezing along i reached the side of the road, to the arranged location and sat under a tree. Shivering, in pain and with a borked gear outer(funny how we still worry about the bike). I watched he Ambulance drive on by and disappear down the hill away from me, just as a car turned up. I dialed 999 again and told the operator to tell the driver to come back up the hill and pull into the first carpark, i’ll be there.

Meanwhile the driver of the car had got out and come to see if i was ok. Great, he had a bleedin dog collar on. I was expecting the grim reaper..

Finally the ambulance turned up,a 4×4. I told him to hide the bike in the bracken, (i’d called my mate to come a collect it) and off we went to rendezvous with a proper Ambulance incase my condition required aid during transit. He’d confirmed it was likely to be a Pneumothorax. And off i went the A&E for a chest drain.

I spent a week in hospital with a catheter fitted(that’s a whole different adventure, word of advise, never raise the catheter above your chest!)

The shoulder was fubared for 7 weeks from the resulting shoulder separation, ACJ sprain, graded at 3-5.
6 weeks later i was back down that trail again during a recoup ride.

    Just run what you brung.

Alot of the sections are on fire road, although they aren’t special timed runs, you don’t want to be dragging rubber through your lungs.
The timed sections, might be a touch greasy, they’ll not be a major issues on trail tyres. And i hear the Technical section isn’t included due to lack of marshals.

    See you up there.

I’ve seen the TopShip display. It’s great.
I’ve also read the stories of the U boat men playing football with rolled up overalls on a secluded beach, as he stretched their legs and collected fresh water. That was near the Hunters Inn, so maybe the same pub and story you know of.

    Dropoff.

No luck in getting a route, here’s why.

Really sorry but the map does not go out to anyone. Also I have restrictions on my license imposed by the forestry commission regarding spectators which I have to discourage attending the race or entering the woods due to the amount of dangerous tree fall so I can’t condone photographers on the course. I can’t stop them obviously but I can’t help either and you will not believe what I have had to do to get this race off the ground..

    I’ll be there marshaling.

I’ve put a post here requesting for marshals as they’re so far, thin on the ground.

Drop off, once the route has been finalised, and if Carlos lets me know, I’ll drop you a line to key spots.

I’ll try and bag a few pics whilst there too.

In the mean time, if anyone an help marshalling, get in touch with the race organiser. Free race entry for a friend or yourself if you can supply a marshal.

    Cheers.

I’d of said a Buzzard. With a chance of another raptor in the area causing the disturbance.

If it was a bright day, the additional therms coming off a built up area.

The hunting seems wrong for hawks and harriers, if it was circling high and sounds the wrong habitat for a Goshawk.

Keeping raptors as pets, seem to be the new staffie, these days, so it could be anything if it’s a captive bird, that’s free flying worked well. In fact many falconers are contracted by town councils to deal with pigeons and other birds seen as vermin.

But if you’re sure it’s not a Buzzard, then it’s likely to be a captive.

My knowledge is however limited on the behaviour of UK raptors, so to give a definite answer, shouldn’t be seen as fact.

I’d of let those Braces into the ledges a touch to ensure they don’t slide along over time. 😉

How do you think to have got on by the end of next weekend?
I’m in need of a trip and was wondering if you could need a extra pair of limbs.

Today i’ve been pondering over a use of around 200 green glass litre bottles, rather than throwing them in a recycling skip. There’s also loads of hose here.

And after a little time on the internet to obvious appeared on the screen.

Chinese farmer Ma Yanjun came up with a novel, inexpensive way to provide hot water for members of his family: laying 66 bottles, connected by hose pipes, on a board covered with aluminum foil. Placed on a rooftop and pointed north to collect the maximum amount of sunlight.

*whispers* Ok, so here I am in cg’s garden staring at a dead bird. Shall I make a mobile out it and have it dangling in front of her bedroom window ready for the mornings wake up?
I can muster a few extra dead birds for good effect.

Or I can make up a trebuchet and place the bird on one end and a weighted object on her window cill, then leave a note explaining that opening the window, will dislodge the weight, and the bird will get jettisoned away. Unless I get the measurements wrong…..
    CG. Just kidding.
If you’re lucky something will come and grab it in the night.
If not, the saga will continue.

If anyone wants any ruff cider, i’ll be drawing what’s left into Gal containers possibly tomorrow. Haven’t a clue what it’s like, but i’ve been told by the chap who made it, it’s 8%. There will be around 150 gals.

The other 1000 gallons he’s left me, is turning to vinegar, but if you like it like that, i can run some of that off too. But most of that will be turned to full on Cider vinegar with mother.

If anyone comes to ride the Quantocks and wants any produce, let me know.
