Good advice re face to face conversation

I would add that HR are there to protect the company not the employee – whether they see you or your manager as the “easier problem” to fix will depend on lots of variables…

This is classic ‘a fella down the pub said’ territory.

That’s what I would have thought too

One thing I read about recently was someone “accidentally” overpaying by BACS and asking to refund the difference (maybe in cash) which opens you up to money laundering prosecution if you don’t know where the money came from

Another vote for – fix the underlying problem with the boiler

Old oil boilers are really simple and last for effectively ever. In order I would bet on

    Spark electrode needs replacing

“Magic eye” flame detector needs cleaning/replacing

Jet needs cleaning (might indicate fuel filter needs replacing)

    Fan problem

There are two separate issues here I think – Risk management vs illegal acts by an individual

Safety and risk management – healthcare has a lot to learn from other industries. I’ve worked in a few (chemicals, pharma and now medical devices) where the structured risk assessments and continuous learning/improvement could and should be applied to healthcare. Healthcare (and mainly consultants) seem to think they are some unique and special flower that can’t learn from any other industry. A level of honesty is required about deaths and incidents, some will happen, saying there should be zero is unhelpful you can’t apply a lot of risk management tools with zero, probability doesn’t work like that.

Willful illegal acts are something entirely different – these safety systems aren’t set up to deal with that really. When working at a large chemical site with a very good safety record, one disgruntled employee sabotaged part of the plant (undid a pipe) and ended up spraying a colleague with caustic. All the risk management – design reviews, commissioning tests, scheduled maintenance…) couldn’t prevent that

    Compare and contrast:

Pakistani business man pays $250 000 each for him and his son to end up in this situation.

100? Pakistani migrants paid $5000 each to end up on a sinking ship off the coast of Greece.

Not sure what to even think about either – other than the world is f’d up – the contrast struck me though

Could have running a tumble dryer and washing machine on the same socket at the same time be the issue?

Yes – a lot of (cheaper) double sockets are not rated for 2×13 Amps. They assume some level of diversity, one of the plugs used for something low power. Some of the better makes (MK I think) are rated for 26 Amps total

Do electricians work on live tails?

Not sane ones – the guys working for the network operator are very different to your domestic electrician. Even most checking/fault finding should be done with the power off using resistance type measurements where possible.
Long time since I did electrical work but most people would just cut the seals off the main fuse* and pull it out. You’re supposed to notify the network operator for them to re-seal it, in the old days they might have fitted an isolator for you, these days??? Apart from fitting a smart meter I’d be surprised if they were interested.

*I wouldnt touch the seals on the meter end of the tails

don’t want to be oversold anything unnecessary.

Prepare to be disappointed – from your description I expect any decent spark to be recommending a new consumer unit if not a substantial re-wire

I’ll echo all the “get an electrician” comments
That’s been properly bodged at some point – the light fitting that doesnt work doesnt seem to have a neutral (black wire in old colours)
Light fitting that works has permanent live and neutral (red and black) someone has taken 3core and earth from there to the switch. Red is permanent live, 2 gang switch has the two switches connected, there’s a short connecting wire between the bottom terminals. Blue and yellow are switched lives back to the ceiling rose (blue wire seems to be taped off in furthest light fitting?)
No idea whats happening between the two light fittings

I don’t think small changes are going to cut it – recycling/reusing yes but its hardly going to make a dent.
It’s also not always obvious what the “right” thing is – things suggested in this thread and elsewhere:
Get a milk man – plenty of lifecycle analysis shows that plastic bottles are lower impact, one of the highest recycling rates, energy required to transport the heavier glass bottles, energy needed to clean and sterilise glass bottles
Plastic wrapping on food – Greenpeace keep posting pictures wrapped broccoli when its clear that the food waste caused by not wrapping food is much worse (cucumbers, broccoli, not two pears in a plastic tray and a lid)
    Reusable nappies? Depends

I reckon your adage is perpetuated by day traders and financial institutions that have an interest in retail investors (and pensions) bag-holding any dips.

    Change my mind.

Because all the data says you wont time the market well, human psychology pushes most people into getting in/out too early
Because “not timing perfectly” has a much bigger impact than you would think, the impact of missing the 10 best DAYS is massive

    Fully invested (S&P 500 index) $29,845 5.62%
    Missed 10 best days $14,895 2.01%
    Missed 20 best days $9,359 -.33%

I had Scarpa SL’s for years and now have Altberg Tethra’s – similar old school leather boot I would say. Fine with walking crampons on the odd occasion I’ve used them. They will fit (they do half sizes and 5 widths and made to measure if you’re really weird/deformed) not cheap though

    sharkey

any idea how real the sizing is? They don’t have any xl in stock and I’m worried the L will be a bit small…

Sizing seems normal I’m a large in most tops/jackets and that what I got, doesnt flap about but its not roadie tight

I was completely against motorbikes for years, Mrs Sharkey is from a family of bikers and I dissuaded her from getting one for a long time as I thought they were dangerous. Did my test 5 years ago and completely changed my mind. With decent training and awareness I think safety is mostly down to you. Yes someone can essentially knock you off but 9 times out of ten the rider could/should have spotted the hazard and done something about it. If you ride like a d*** then yes you can come unstuck very quickly.
If you havent been on the road in a while maybe do a refresher lesson with an instructor, do a police bikesafe day?

I bought the gore paclite jacket for commuting and its brilliant – packs small, kept me dry all day in a recent very wet trip to the mountains in Spain (out for 4-5 hours in relentless rain)

Currently on sale for £107 in Blacks https://www.blacks.co.uk/16079153/gore-men-s-paclite-gore-tex-cycling-jacket-16079153

Yes it should be win win, extra employer contribution which is free money and you should save the NI contribution on you contributions through sacrifice rather than paying employee contributions. Income tax saving should be equal – private pensions add basic rate to whatever you pay in, if you’re a higher rate tax payer you’d have to claim the difference through tax code or tax return

Different to sunsail, these guys offer sailing and multisport options. Really enjoyed a cycling and sailing holiday we did with them a few years ago. Live aboard, some days sailing, some days dropped off to explore an island on bikes, get picked upon the other side.

Chris is a great figurehead and advocate but in Manchester has been hampered by lack of budget and frankly interest from most of the councils. I fear the same limitations here, the news report mentions £5million government funding which is peanuts. I think I read new cycle lanes cost £500k per km

And if you end up undoing it completely or fitting a new one – cut down the threaded rod so you can use a normal socket. Most plumbers dont bother but it means you have to turn the nut about a million times with one of those awkward spanners ^^ if you do need to take it off again

Try asking on horizons unlimited Facebook group (or I think they have a forum on the website). Green card from current insurer should cover most countries, for others you can usually buy the legal minimum 3rd party insurance at the border. I doubt you will get more than 3rd party outside EU

When you say you taped up the wires – what did you do? keep all the wires together that were in the same terminals and just wrap in tape?
Lights are usually daisy chained in a radial circuit – power in to the light and power out the next light. I would guess your tape has come apart and broken the circuit to the next lights. The lights that still work will be in the circuit before the one in the porch.
As a very temporary measure you could get away with a chocolate block connector as long as its out of reach and nobody is going to stick their fingers in there. Not wanting to be preachy but if you dont have the equipment and knowledge to check that the circuit is actually dead before disconnecting terminals then I wouldnt be playing with it

I think the important word there is car – I dont think weirdos like me who have a non-work related van (LGV) have really been considered

    sharkey
    Free Member

Pretty sure the Sheffield charges will apply to all LGV’s (like the plan for Manchester)- how would the system know the difference between my van which is purely used for playing out and your average self employed tradies van? Maybe an exemption for camper vans but it would have to be registered as a camper with DVLA

    sharkey

Depending on where you are and where you plan to ride you might want to look at the low emission zones coming in next year. Manchester is proposing to bring in a £10 daily charge for vans that arent Euro6 (2016 or newer) for the whole of greater manchester so including parts of the M62 and M60 M61 afik. Other zones coming in for Sheffield, Bristol, Bath…
