I still think a separate thread would have been better but hey ho. Here we are.

Elbows. Yeah I done that yesterday. Looking through all the other news channels. It’s worldwide. Least in the English speaking channels. I watched a film instead.

ISW map updated, goes further than most others. Looking like the idea might be to push south and circle Izyum.

Hmmm, the sycophantic bastards have cancelled the fitba, that could tip me over the edge into this thread for real. Absolutely no call for that this weekend, next weekend I could understand, but this just no need at all.

Was wondering if they’ll send reinforcements, apparently there have been 30-40k volunteer reserves ready to go in moscow. You do have to expect some kinda russian push back. Find out soon enough if they amount to anything if that’s true.

It’s amazing how much Russian bloggers give away on social media!

Yeah, they puggled the life out of me for months tbh, but they see to give fairly accurate information on the tactical side.

Girkin, saying, according to the ‘laws of the game’ expecting a push in the south too, doesn’t seem to think it’s a feint, just 2 equal blows.

We all know the DUP position, they just realise they’ve made a pigs ear of it and that the whole process has lead to more than likely a quicker path to re-unification. The DUP are too stupid to realise they have the best of both worlds and could campaign on that strength, but hey ho, that’s what’s happens when you are steeped in ‘tradition’, you fail to see the opportunities right in front of your face..

As for the Tory interest here, I’d have a guess that it’s also a realisation that they’ve made a pigs ear of it too, and if they can move the border back into Ireland between the 6 and the 26 counties, then the EU would probably have to capitulate on a lot of EU rules in general, UK wide, as any form of internal hard border would be unpalatable to many, and it would need to be almost non-existent.

I’m far from an expert, but that is my fairly uneducated look at it. Would be interesting to hear alternative views tbh, as I’ve not looked into it too deeply.

I was actually on the boat to Ireland as few days after you TJ, you’d probably observed the same as I did on the Cairnryan to Belfast route and back, that there didn’t look like a lot of checking going on anyway, the lorries were all just chucked on and off the boats at either end as far as I could make out, I was there quite early, and the cars were barely even looked at.

Very much a bad attempt at obvious opportunism from the Tories here I think. I doubt very much they are doing it to show solidarity with the DUP(the minority position on this in NI as far as I know). As ever they’ll be useful idiots for the Tories I think.

I’ll need to look into the specific tory plans if I mind now you bring it up.

Girkins latest comment couple of hours ago:

On the Kherson front, today the enemy advances in the area of the settlement. Posad-Pokrovskoye – had a tactical character of “leakage”. The village is in our hands, measures are being taken to eliminate the enemy infantry groups that have broken through. South of Kharkov – so far a complete “alles kaput” of organized defense. Balakleya abandoned by our troops. Fights are going on near approaches to Kupyansk. The enemy, using mobile DRGs, makes deep raids behind the lines of our disoriented troops, causing panic with small forces and destroying rear checkpoints, intercepting roads and transport columns. Thanks to reliable communications – these groups are supported by pinpoint missile strikes, and our aviation is not able to recognize “friend or foe” in this mess – therefore, such raids by the enemy are “getting away with” so far. Our reserves are constantly moving into the area of breakthroughs.

You could have the full ten days flat out, just dont make the rest of us.

In fairness, you are jumping into a mourning thread imposing opinions on people that don’t really want to hear them, so kinda works both ways.

There is room for more than one thread.

I’ve zero affinity for the Queen or the Royals, so I’m not coming at it from that perspective, fyi.

The welfare state is supposed to be there for everyone, except in reality if you are a higher earner in which case if you lose your income you’re on your own and no one cares, the fact you’ve paid in significant more in tax over the years is irrelevant.

If you lose your income even if you are low earner there’s no safety net and no-one cares. no-one is living a comfortable life on broo money with some jobsworth up their arse every couple of weeks.

    No, she is / was.

I don’t have a national identity. Sorry to piss on your chips there. She’s an old lady who died. Nothing more, nothing less to me in any way, shape or form. Not used money, stamps, post boxes or err warships in years and I don’t and didn’t care who’s face was on them. This place is funny at times.

I feel ye, but you’re going to have a horrid next 10 days if you let it get to ye, probably best start a new thread if you need to comment, rather than cause a rammy in here. I prefer the no comment approach myself, but each to their own.

It’s also going to be a tool for Truss to start enacting their small government policies. Opps canny pay for that, canny pay for that, remember we paid for your energy bills…

Yeah Liz, we mind very well.

Yeah, I get it, but the whole thing is broken if it isn’t got back, which is clearly what truss is intending here. It’s just a money transfer to already rich companies which is no use to you or I.

But the major problem we have currently is paying people’s bills. Otherwise everything is screwed.

Blame the system in the first place for allowing them to get to that point.

I’m not against it to cover the current crisis. I can just see what Truss is doing, so her policy needs heavily criticised. It’s not even hidden, it’s an open money transfer. It’s wild economics. Meanwhile tax rates are going to get cut too at the upper end. Utterly batshit.

I’d nationalise everything to do with energy.

I completely agree but neoliberal parties aren’t going for this currently are they?

If enough people woke up to the fact and demanded it, it’s not beyond possibility.

We all understand the concept of deficit, and that we spend more than we tax. Next point please

    Fair enough (not everyone does.)

Okay so then you understand that the deficit spend becomes a private sector surplus?

How else do you think money enters the economy if not through deficit spending?

The opposite of this is contraction and austerity. You see?

Yeah, I get it, but the whole thing is broken if it isn’t got back, which is clearly what truss is intending here. It’s just a money transfer to already rich companies.

We all understand the concept of deficit, and that we spend more than we tax.

Are you sure? Are you sure that voters understand and/or Labour are articulating that point to them?

    Labour’s counterproposal doesn’t seem to.

Up here in Scotland we all learned what it was 10 years ago, people wouldn’t shut up about it. Dunno about down south mind. Interesting that now it’s fully admitted that the uk runs a deficit, guess you could be forgiven for thinking that it was only Scotland that ran one.

    So… back on topic…

The topic was about Truss spending 140bn to subsidise energy bills etc. And how that might happen.

    It wasn’t off-topic.

    Pure ignroance.

Quick question that I haven’t seen asked or answered as I’ve had to skip a few pages in this fast moving thread but is anybody managing the upside on the fuel situation? Obviously if the price cap is put in place and the Govt promises to fill in the difference, there’s no limit to how much **** we (the country) can get into. Surely it’s a gift for the oil/gas companies?

Without someway of, at minimum, taxing the extra profits, yes it’s absolutely a gift to the energy companies.

I’d nationalise everything to do with energy.

Edit: Just seen a report that the Ukr forces are now less than 10KM from Kupyansk, if true then… crikey!

Sounds like they’ve picked a real weak spot in the defenses. Great progress if they can hold it on and then expand..

Interesting in that the area backs on to the 2 big lakes, east and south of kharkiv, seems to be strategy to push against these natural features in the south and north. Will be very interesting if they can hold and then ultimately push beyond, particular down the line if they could push through that natural bottle neck between the 2 lakes towards the belgorod supply lines. See how it develops over the month in to next. but could see my negativity turn to positivity if they do. Sounds like some very interesting developments anyhow.

The monarch dying will give an absolutely massive boost to any ruling party imo – the nation and institutions will feel the need to rally together.

So the price cap will now be for two years? I wasn’t aware of that. That definitely takes us up to the next general election and completely rules out a snap one.

yeah not that I was expecting anything else giving the current state of polls, but aye that’s that settled now.

No i need to to calm down about your fantasy economics.

I see no solid arguments coming from you. Fair enough.

No wonder if you don’t even understand that printing (ok creating) money is taking value from the future.

Anyhow, that’s plenty on this nonsense, though i’m sure you’ll keep waffling on about it.

Gonny gies a break on yer MMT nonsense.

How it get’s financed then before any borrowing is done?

You know – that is an ignorant comment. You can admit you don’t understand how a government spends.

The only nonsense is people that still think tax pays for things.

I’m well aware the government can print money and take value from the future, it’s not a unlimited resource though. And even your MMT says that it should only be used for important things, like infrastructure and investment or it will have inflationary consequences if you are just using it like a credit card.

Letting the energy companies keep the profit with putting the burden on the taxpayers, is not good MMT policy, it’s robbing the credit card.

We get it, it’s not the solution to all our problems.

There is not £2500 price cap, there’s a cap on the standard charge and the kwh charge. it’s just a crap way of explaining it.

Be interesting to see what labour did if they did win the next election, cause I think you can retrospectively apply a windfall tax. Would be surprised if they didn’t campaign on that tbh.

)for us all to turn the heating down a few degrees and see how long we can go before putting the heating on would be a start,

We are all going to do that anyhow.

The answer to your point, is a windfall tax, or nationalisation as Ernie suggests.

That along with a cap, which should be at current levels, not this further rise, is how we protect people, we can only turn the heating down so far.

I agree with Ernie’s assessment that nationalisation of everything to do with energy is the correct answer. There should be no profiteering on an essential service like domestic energy production.

Someone made the point that Starmer might have a problem because Truss is more serious than Boris. To be honest Starmer is a Lawyer, his trade is in serious, so in theory he should fair well against Truss and a more conversational style of exchanges.

Guess we’ll find out over the next few months, thought he done well there.

Starmer doing well on emphasising who’ll pay and who’ll benefit.
