Mail order is rubbish. Waited 1 month to recieve the correct rear mech after they forgot my order then sent wrong one! 👿

I’ll speak to a couple of guys to see what is possible (Hamsterly regulars). Put me down for a maybe.

I thought they were working on a super lightweight 5. What happened to that? Last I heard they were concerned with breakage and it was being tested.

Nice bike! Thinking of getting rid of my 5 and getting a Alpine. What size are the chainrings on the Alpine 160s? The pivot looks a little bit higher than the 5 so it should be able to take a bigger front set-up. According to Orange the 5 is limited to 32T middle.

I’m a few lbs short of 12st and run mine at 125+ve/120-ve. Rebound about middle I think. They are on an Orange 5. Does the bike itself, head angle etc, make a difference in fork performance at certain pressures? Also, anybody use the lockout and flood gate system for normal riding rather than just locking out for road/climbs?

I use it on my Pikes for fireroad/easy climbs and going fast on flat bits. It feels better when I hammer down on the pedals.

I’ve done a few rides on my 1×9, converted fron SS. Verdict is GOOD for summer trails, a little bit more “Ummpf” for single track. I’ve got a road cassette, a super short cage rear mech with 32T front + bash ring and un-cabled front mech. I’ve got the front mech set-up so that most of the time the chain drops, it picks up again with a couple of crank turns.

Take the tyres off and put in your luggage? They must almost the full 3Kg.

Unlucky! I take it you were riding your bike? If so, was the crash your fault and, if not, will you be making a claim against the driver?
How about putting the voucher to your payout and get a very nice bike?

Gravity dropper here too. They take a lot of faff out of rides for me. I seemed to be forever getting my seat to the correct height or straight with a QR. I’ve got a multi with added 1″ drop from max but my mate found that its just an extra hole in the tube that does this, so he made his regular GD into a multi too!

How bad is it really? I did this at Inners last Sunday. Had a TCP bath to scrub lightly then shower and left to scab. It was still a bit juicy before bed so covered area with Savlon and clean t-shirt. Been ok since and picking the scabs is fun. Almost fully gone now apart from couple of the deeper scratches.

I’ve got one in the garage to fix. Its only running 2 gears at the mo. There are some instructions on the Sheldon Brown website to convert it to 2 speed fixed with a bit of machining involved, so may try that in the long run and run it on this:

    Glentress on Saturday:

Iaraichean, any idea of the current trail conditions at Glentress & Inners? Are there many muddy puddles about?

I think we’re a bit stuck in the middle a bit here in the UK. Even in the summer a couple of days of rain can sometimes warrant mud tyres. It doesn’t take a great amount of funds to lay yours hands on a couple of pairs of tyres; thats where the problem starts. How do you get the best ride from current conditions given a choice of tyres?

I’m currently running Nevegals 2.35 Stick-E front DTC on rear. Just got some SmallBloc 8s though and was a bit hesitant on fitting one on the rear for Glentress this Saturday after the recent heavy rain.

    Any advice appreciated 🙂

Nezbo, I’m too a tinkerer :D. Sometimes get almost as much enjoyment from fitting new parts and servicing, so as good as new, as I do from riding down a nice dry swoopy trail. Its odd but part of the hobby I think, entwined with riding is fettling 😉

Just watching the pre-race interviews and re-runs on Freecaster. I think Peaty’s win has got inside Sam Hill’s head. Thats why he crashed! 😈

Ouch! Cant believe he got up, never mind riding away! 😯

Hadge, what size frame is it? I’m about the same height as you and the 456 SS looks remarkably like my DMR (which I love) size wise. The DMR has rather narrow stays though so is gradually wearing away in muddy conditions. Would love a similar bike that will take fatter tyres for not too much moolah! 😉

** Edit: Sorry just saw that you posted 16″ frame** …Doh!!

Juicy pads become a lot easier to replace if you ditch the metal retention thing in the back of the caliper

Done, coz I couldn’t get them back in!

The only problem with that I’ve had is when the retention tab on the caliper snapped off after some goodridge pads went to the metal on a wet NYMoors ride

Could be a problem as thats where I do most of my riding! 🙄

Sorry for your loss :(. Will keep them peeled.

Just bled my Juicy 5s tonight, 1st time I’ve done it. They seem really hard to work on compared to the Shimano Deore I have on the 2nd bike. The pad replacement is a pain in the ass.
How do Elixir pad replacement work? I like the simplicity of just bolting them in place like the Deores.

I’ve not seemed to have many problems. I watched La Bresse final last week & it froze 4 times on me but the rest was fine. Watched re-runs since no problem. I can understand that they have problems as broadcasting live onto the net is pretty new.

    Nice set-up.
What size front ring is that? Just trying to gauge the size of the inner plate. I’ve got a 32t with outer bash and front mech on my 1×9 but not tried it on any rough stuff yet so may need one of those blackguards. The outer bash on mine just covers the ring so if the inner was bigger it would look odd.

Used the hardtail as SS over winter, just converted to 1×9 for summer. Also got a 2×9 Orange 5 and a SS steel road commuter. I’ve got a SA 3 speed hub on a 27″ wheel at the back of the garage. I might try fitting it to a 26″ rim to use on the hardtail next winter.

    A few Qs:
    1) Is it on a full suss bike?
    2) Does it happen on the same/similar route?
    3) How did you determine your chain length on the double & bash set-up?

The N79 looks like my perfect gadget, an all-in-one. Had Nokia sports phones before and looks like the N79 Active is the latest, metal casing etc. I’ll be getting one when my contract runs out in October 🙁

Was up Eston Nab today with my body guard, Vern, some good singletrack and easy enough to get to the moors. ;0)
Give me a shout when you want to get out for a ride, I regularly ride with a good bunch of guys that will show you the best bits and push your limits. :0))

Swapped last week from Nevegal Stick-e 2.35 front and back to BG DTC 2.35 front and Nevegal DTC 2.35 rear. Did a new bit of the trail at Hamsterley and the front washed out on some cinder as I turned into a small drop off. Had a fairly bad crash with a lot of bruising, can’t help thinking that the Stick-e Nevegals would have held once the tyre was through the loose stuff.

Willy, I don’t think it ever was illegal 😕 , just a grey area that was cleared up. I bet most commuters on “proper” bikes don’t know they are illegal if not using amber pedal reflectors!! I certainly didnt till tonight 😳
