Personally as I have a dehydrator I always mean to dry them but I have a problems as soon as I get home I fry them in butter and eat them?? But they are one of the better drying mushrooms. Found a troop of lawers wigs (Shaggy ink cap)last week supposed to be one of the top mushrooms. Nothing compared to fairy ring (minus the stalk)
SD-253Free MemberI used to do 26 miles a day 5 days a week no problem but weight loss was a bit extreme. Also it depends on the route mines was not to horrendous as it was fairly rural on a not to busy A road would not be able to take a city run of 5 mile return nowadays while I am happy to go 40-50 miles to a Pub
SD-253Free MemberPS Tech wash says on the packet pure soap. Soap flake boxs (Mainly for wool) also say pure soap so they should be interchangeable.
NOTE it is contradictory to use a pure soap wash and then use a reproofer you may as well just use a normal soap powder. The pure soap is to save you useing the reprofer not to protect the material. So you clean with the pure soap (tech wash etc) untill the waterproofing starts to fail then you uses the reproofer. I have noticed that the nixwax dose not mention heat as in tumble dyer anymore good as I haven’t got one but I do still stick them on a raidator as I canot get out of the habit?SD-253Free Membernikwax tech wash and tx
Bought a gallon of both for my innumerable waterproof jackets trousers (mainly walking stuff) but also use it occasionally on plain windproof stuff works just as well albeit with a much shorter life. Must admit I have never come across gortex shorts. Are they comfy i.e. well padded where you need it and pockets at the rear no daft cargo pockets or front pockets? Can you tell me the brand and where you got them from? Must admit I normal just live with the wet. Unless it’s hammering down and them I put on the thin pair of treated windproof trousers.

probably going to get flamed for this but………….this thread should be renamed the Cotic, On-One and DMR thread cos thats pretty much all we see in these threads. Does anyone have any interesting Steel hardtails? not that some in here arent interesting and of course there’s nothing wrong with On-Ones and Cotics etc and they are nice looking bikes with nice shape to them but i dont want to look at 20 of them in different locationssorry
The Thorn Enduro (above) is Steel as all Thorns areSD-253Free Memberruscle – Member
If you look in highway code as a cyclist (and same for horses) you don’t need to take up lane position, you can stay in left lane of roundabout no matter which exit you are taking, but it does take a brave cyclist to do this if taking an exit on the right! Are you sure? I have no doubt that a horse rider should take up a left hand side but if the highway code says that about cyclist they must be trying to reduce the amount of cyclist on the road?? I always give a massive signal when turning right at a roundabout (or at any junction for that matter) but obviously can’t do it all the way round a roundabout. Road position is most important and being noticed (not seen you are always seen). And giving an exaggerated signal is the best way to be seen.
SD-253Free Memberoldgit – Member
Sometimes I signal like that if there is traffic comming towards me, saves getting my arm taken off. What side of the road do you ride on its left off a roundabout?? If you are turning right you would have already made the signal and be on the right side therefore no need to indicate again??
SD-253Free MemberI also spent about 2 hours constantly cocking up a simple front gear cable replacement. When I had finally done it I realized I had put the adjuster around the wrong way……so I will have to do it all again although I doubt I will be able to make it last 2 hours again.
Opps I meant to say this was on one of my other bikes not on my “beloved” Thorn.
Oddly as I haven’t had the Thorn that long the other bikes are beginning to feel odd when I ride them. The position is definatly different on the Enduro?SD-253Free MemberNo Woodsman I will have to go with what you said although the Rohloff site showed another way it is not available on my bike. As I was repairing a puncture (I bet its nearly 2 years since I last had one) on my new Thorn I noted the location where the screwdriver goes. I also spent about 2 hours constantly cocking up a simple front gear cable replacement. When I had finally done it I realized I had put the adjuster around the wrong way……so I will have to do it all again although I doubt I will be able to make it last 2 hours again. I will be a lot happier with my very low maintenance Rohloff and discs. By the way when I did the puncture repair I replaced both Schwalbe Big Apples with Schwalbe Marathon Plus. I am assuming the latter has better puncture protection I did ask Schwalbe a week ago but they never answered. Again aiming for lower maintenance………hopefully?
SD-253Free MemberThanks very much Woodsman. I am not now sure Woodsman that what you say is nesserary as The Rohloff site seems to say with my drop out all I have to do is pull back the rear wheel using or adjusting something on the drop out this only works with Rohloff specific drop outs. Will reread it. Thanks again. Took a deepfat fryer back to a shop yesterday had to strap to top of rack had all my bags on felt ok. Not that much weight though. Also found that there is a bike shop that sells and services Rohloff only about 20 miles from me?? Surprised? should have been as Lincolnshire is a cycle county and not just on the flat but on the Wolds as well. All the towns are built in relativly flat parts of the Wolds and you see old biddies doing there shopping on 1950s bike some with Sturmey Archer 3 hub geared bikes?? Sometimes I wonder what decade I am in??

I tell a lie, he didn’t. But he did say:The Old man Mountain Sherpa rack will fit but the stays are too short on the Enduro for it to carry panniers, without positioning them a long way back on the rails and thus outside of the bike’s wheelbase
Right and wrong. I have tried the bags and your right they do slip to the back of the rack (outside the wheel base)but I am fairly certain that I can do something about that. At least bring them forward a bit with the carradice C bags you can adjust the rail fittings as well as the clip at the bottom. But for now I will leave them the way they are to see how they ride with 10 or so KGs. Thanks now I am going to be a bit more precise as you have obviously not taken the hint. How do you adjust the chain tension forget the bit about T1 – T2 that was easy to understand. What I did not understand for instance was “Rotate the ecentric to achieve the desired chain tension” ?????????SD-253Free Memberir_bandito – Member
It was dseigned specifially for the OMM Sherpa. Here’s mine:
Not sure what you mean you appear to be saying the bike was desined for the rack???
I see no bags on and I bought the OMM Sherpa and it looks nothing like your rack? http://www.carradice.co.uk/categories/ommSeeSD-253Free Memberir_bandito – Member
The only problem is, what happens when you take you wheel off?Hell I havent worked out how to do it yet. Although the seller did tell me. He also showed me how to tighen the chain incorrectly I think. And I am having trouble working out exactly how to tighten the chain (it is ok at the moment). The Thorn handbook does not show it but just uses words not diagrams. I think I may have been to dependent on cycle repair shops in the past?
SD-253Free MemberSod it should have shown new rack but did not take a picture of it this is the original rack
SD-253Free MemberThe bike with new near perfect rack. It feels very strong and much more robust than any other I have. Look at the heel clearance and I can increase it
SD-253Free Memberwoodsman – Member
I would say you’ve bought a mountain bike that has the capacity for a small rack. I’ve got the original sales literature somewhere, it pretty much says thatI’d ditch the Thudbuster if that is restricting your needs. The designer of the bike say as long as I am on road there will be nothing wrong with the with ability of the bike to take heavy loads. See above for his email.
It shows how different our requirements are, I removed the rack mounts at the earliest oportunity – held mud close to the tyre and I had no use for them – aesthetics aside! If I were looking for a road touring bike, I’d be much more specific than the Enduro
You are guessing at my requirements I want a bike that does everything. Although you may think that is not possible it is as long as you don’t expect to be the best choice for every use. Top of my lists is minimal maintance with its disk brakes the enduro meets this perfectly. I want a bike that will pull a trailer full of wood and apples (not at the same time)and anything else I forage. It also has to go off road for a bit of the foraging this will not involve heavy loads, if it did I would simply walk and push the bike (once loaded)or even use one of my other bikes. Also I want it for the occasional touring (normally for a less than a week) this would involve putting on my front bags (carrdice front rack for suspension forks) so no need to have a heavy load on the rear rack. Another requirement is for long day/night rides about 30 to 70 miles. Some people I know call this pub-crawls. Harsh as I may only call into 1 pub…..well 2 is generally a minimum. Most importantly to get me to any pub but specifically to one, which is 11 or 12 miles away. Now obviously some of this does require off road cycling. I believe this bike from the little use I have had up to now does this with maximum comfort. PS reference the latter I think the Thud buster may be adding to the comfort although that remains to be seen or felt to be more precise. I should point out that I live in a rural area and am not allowed to drive for mediclal reasons. The nearest shop is 6 miles away and there is only 1 regular bus a week. I do have 4 bikes but will be getting rid of one. Over time I intend on having at least 1 more hub geared bike……possibly a tourer???

Rack mounting Enduru note the bottom one only option is to have it made up at a blacksmith. No problem if i can find one with the right thickness of aluminium in stock the cost of them buying in would make it to expensive. The bottom one is simply in a tube at the top ie it will roll up or down and the bottom can be moved to make it longer or shorter………..ie may be it bit weak??SD-253Free MemberTubus racks are very good and can be fitted in a variety of ways using their accessories.
Bit late with that suggestion ordered and paid for it yesterday about 1 oclock arrived 11 am today!!
Tubus are a similar price and basiclay if you have no rack mounting (some mountain bikes do but in my case the in wrong place) then the only option is through the wheels as in the OMM and the Tubus.avdave2 – Member
The Enduro wasn’t designed for carrying much. I have the Catalyst which has longer chainstays and proper rack mounts. Looking back I should have gone for the Enduro but at the time I bought the bike as an on road commuter and then changed to off road commuting. It just means I’m stuck with v brakes at the rear which are pretty useless in the middle of winter. Not stictly true see below
From the designer of the bike
“Hi,
Yes I designed the Enduro and all of our other bikes…I’m pleased to hear that
you find the bike comfortable…that was the idea! The upside of having the
short stays is how well the bike responds to out of the saddle efforts and the
contradictory mix of extreme stability and razor sharp handling…I used to
steer mine with my backside as much as with the bars.
You will have no problems carrying 10Kg on the road…as long as you can keep
the front wheel on the deck…if the bike rides OK…it will be OK, with
whatever you put on it on the road.
Best regards,”
Andy B.SD-253Free MemberI am going with your OMM specially as its Carradice who supply, as I bought all my luggage from them, the full monty front rear and seatpost bags. They are actually cheaper than the US makers. The big down side is having to take the rack off (at least in part)to remove the wheel and all the Rohloff stuff being to close may use some spacers. The tyres on at the moment are Schwalbe big apple I will ask Scwalbe what puncture protection they offer compared to Marthon plus. Thanks for your help pity the OMM rack is so expensive.
SD-253Free MemberHeel clearance is ok if I push the bags back on the present rack, the real problem is the present rack allows the bags to turn in and catch the spokes. Although it would be nice to push the bags back further. I did not find it an arse up head down ride far from it, maybe that is relative to my other bikes. My intentions are to use it as my normal bike and especially for my all day cycle rides. I certainly found it very comfortable the saddle/seat post was excellent. The designer just told me the only problem I will have on road with a big load is the front wheel raising not a problem, as I would have front rack on. Not sure I want to buy from US that’s more to do with a lack of patience. Just remembered the handlebars are very high relative to my other bikes I think it has been set up different to standard set up. Anyway thanks for your help.
SD-253Free MemberJust paid 1140 (4 days ago)for this mans bike (he did a 600 mile return journey)thorn enduro mountain bike 4 years old but less than 500 miles use(not nescarily an advantage). Cane Creek Thudbuster seatpost and hope mini disk and a pathetic rack. Thorn say the rear is not designed to take heavy weight daft if you consider that off road would put more stress on the frame and I wouldn’t have it loaded off road. Any way if I can find a rack that can fit I will replace it with something substantialy. Any ideas? The Rack bolt holes only come half way down the stays(may not be the right name the down tube) Due to helping a mate putting in my bathroom I have had a miniscule amount of riding hopefully tonight I will get in an hour. Either way I enjoyed what little use i have had on it. I liked the riding postion and i will get back when I have some more use out of it.
SD-253Free MemberGot myself a Thorn Raven enduro mountain bike full disc brakes the lot 1140 pound. 3 years old done about 500 miles. Bang on what I wanted!
SD-253Free MemberIf the price and spec is right I will buy. The only real problem is the distance to pick up as I don’t drive. Unable to work how to email you, I assume I can? JB

Germany benefit from exporting manufactured goods because they have a reputation for quality and export stuff to Oil rich countrys who have money and demand.
We dont have the same reputation and there are few places with demand for anything.
I’d agree with you, except I think you’re wrong.
I can’t think of a single thing I own that was made in Germany? Parts of my car and washing machine maybe? The vast bulk of everything I own was either made in the UK or Asia

No you are wrong they export a few high end consumer goods (my Meile washing machinne) but there main exports are machinery when I was last working they provided my firm with a 500,000 pound ultra sonic test machine for example (A load of shite by the way) Anyway what you own is not a statistic you need a few more people. By the way my computer has no pound sign anyone know how to put one on?SD-253Free Membersimonralli2 – Member
This article today explains things pretty clearlyThe money in your pocket is effectively worthless. The government declares it as legal tender and will accept taxation payments with this bill of exchange but the £5 note is no longer backed by anything. When push comes to shove, a £5 note is just a piece of paper and ink with no intrinsic value at all. It certainly isn’t worth £5.
The history of fiat currencies is unsurprising. All have failed. The Roman denarius, a silver coin, was diluted from 100pc silver to 84pc, then 43pc and finally to 0.05pc until nobody would take the coin as a means of exchange because it had no value.
Scottish economist John Law became the most hated man in France 300 years ago. He had to flee to Italy after introducing a fiat currency that almost brought the country to its knees. History shows that fiat money loves failure.
I also blogged about the psychological aspects on Saturday:
Backed by what exactly? Gold? why has gold got a value? Only ABout 40% has a value in use further more year in year out the supply increases as it does not oxidise there is only one way for it go in the long run down. How can you back your currency up with that It goes up and down like a yo yo. It has not even kept up with inflation over the last 100 years. It fell to 270$ from over about a $1200 under Gordon Brown.
Times change it is not 300 years ago and most people don’t even know that it is not backed by Gold and would not understand your belief in the consequences (psychological aspects) anyway?SD-253Free MemberTrimix – Member
We brought our call center back here because we could give a better customer service (accent, advice, language, humour, relavance etc), it cost more, but provided a much better service for customers in the end.Although clearly important a very recent article in the Times clearly stated that some companies said they were bringing back call centres to the Uk Based on costs.
relavance
If you mean by this getting an answer based on the question you asked not one from a script which had no relation what so ever then you are to put it mildly right. But I have noticed an improvement in the Indian call centres over the last few years still not great though

Germany benefit from exporting manufactured goods because they have a reputation for quality and export stuff to Oil rich countrys who have money and demand
Germany also benefits from having a currency that is lower than you would expect from a strong exporter because the Euro is dragged down by the Piigs. If they still had the Deutchmark I would expect it to be pretty high at the moment which would to some extent rebalance things; they’d import more and export less giving the rest of us a chance. I guess the price they have to pay for this is the continued bail-out of the Piigs.
Massively so but oddly enough they want there Duetchmark back they are very very scared of inflation. History has a long term effect on German bankers and even the German people. The hyper inflation of the 30s will remain in the German mindset for long time to come. And high Deutchmark = low inflation. They would probably not have gone the Euro if they had not been blackmailed by the french over East Germany joing the EU
SD-253Free MemberThe pound is low for the simple reason of supply and demand we import a lot. of course this also leads to inflation. I expect with about a million EU workers here who send there pounds home (after swapping them for Euros)Doesn’t help. Although I don’t work I hope it remains that way. I am not that selfish that I don’t care about British peoples jobs. Eventualy this will almost certainly lead to increased manufacturing exports and therefore jobs (will take a while of so called low exchange rates). Some componies are bringing back there call centres to the UK because it is cheaper to do so. Remember there are other cost in call centre than just labour cost and the pound fallen against the Rupee (excuse spelling)as well. I hhope this continues with more people taking UK holidays.

The are only illegal to carry in a public place, and the blade length doesn’t matter, they are legal at home. If you purchase one you need an itemised receipt to take it home, to ensure you won’t get arrested.Remember the the big anti knife crime drive a few years ago? this was one of the laws the brought in to help the police target people who carry knives.
This article covers the subject better than I ever could:
http://www.lawgazette.co.uk/opinion/comment/law-lock-knives-need-re-examinationIf the blade, locks into place and requires a release catch its a lock knife.
I only really know about this as they was a big article in the guardian a year or so ago where a city lawyer got arrested, as the police saw him eating his lunch with a lock knife, and he was disputing the arrest and possible conviction as it would cost him his job (lawyers cannot have a criminal record).
Only just checked that article and It said this
You could say that you use it in your work, but even this explanation will not vindicate you – after arrest it will be a matter for the courts to decide.
Also did quick survey at country show I would say at least a third I asked had a lock knife with them. I think having it with me when I out walking (for skinning) is bound to be a reasonable excuse. You just cost me 14 quid as I bought a pen knife replacement………..nob head……..top knife though Rodgers of Shefield with a original blade beauty and a better skining knife but no use for dealing with mad dogs. Paypal would be the best way for you to pay me back just for the lock knife mind 7.50 pound. sd-235

I use this one
Uploaded with ImageShack.usfor firewood and cider ect.
A lot off road this trailer can be full of wood or apples I thought suspension might be a benefit but probably not
SD-253Free MemberOlly – Member
why front suspension? a real pain when your on the road ime.pub bike? how far is the pub, is it hilly?
single speed an inbred frame most of the time, and then when you get around to touring, have a nice set of gears, or alfine wheel ready, but unabused?Front suspension as I have come off when I have gone through puddle which had a hidden pot hole right over handle bars. Also some shortcuts involve ruff briddle paths. Do go off road with trailer to collect firewood and apples (cider). Pubs my preferance is one 11 mile away (5 cask). The route to latter is very hilly eventhough I am in Lincolnshire I am on the Wolds (old english for hills). Do lpub crawls on bike upto 50 miles.
