Finally, shoots can and do generate huge revenue….brother-in-law arranges them where he lives in Warwickshire and charges £1500 per person for a days shooting….8 guns per shoot, beaters to be paid, lunch at the local pub etc….its good money for him and some of it goes into the local economy too.
You understate by a huge margin just what benefits there is for the rural community. With the huge losses in farm work (mechanistion)shoots geneate jobs and money. In parts of Scotland it is has lead to repopulation in some areas. And its fun, I only beat but still enjoy the day out specially when you have shit guns.

In all these cases the holders were sane at the point of licensing.

I’m not sure what the answer is… but there is a real problem

Shorter periods between certification. Five years is too long, IMO. Not sure what interval would be “right”, but I do think that five years is too long.
Sorry but can see no way it would be obvious that a person is sane. I have friend that is clearly insane a paranoid schizophrenic to be exact he believes the social are watching/listening/following him. As in the following there are 2 people in each houses each side and behind him a total of 8 doing 8 hours shifts plus others in cars note cars not car waiting for him to leave the house to followe him. When he went out they planted cameras in every roam (Wireless) which he knows are there but cannot see. He has moved house 3 times now to get away from them Also are more importantly his neighbours are all “in on it”. I should strees just how ludicrus this is he monstrusly obese with multiple physical problems I could go on and on and on but you get the picture????? Now I know he is a fruit cake but his doctor doesn’t(any of them from any of the practise he used). Someone stayed with him recently for a week they must know by now so thats two. If he went for a license (ignoring the physical disabilities) how would P.C. plod know he would no doubt check with his doctor (is it just the last one?) No doubt with his clean record a license would be his for the asking

And where do illegal guns come from?

Isn’t there a failing in the system here? I would assume that all guns were once legal.
Well ignoring home made ones (a few are made) I to assume that they all were legal at sometime but not nessarily in this country. Are we to blame the legal gun owners for the introduction of ilegal guns from Eastern Europe?

I prefer the greater and far more macho thrill of fighting in pubs, rather than shooting something what can’t fight back.

Go get a broken bottle, you don’t know what you’re missing.

You can prove yourself to be much more of a ‘mayn’ if you do so. Shooting animals is for pansies
I assume this is irony because I doubt you have the back bone to do anything of the sort

Raoul Moat didn’t have gun license

Where did he get his guns from? The same place the rest of the criminal fraternity gets them. Ilegal importations. Also it appears that there are very few illegal weapons in Britian. It appears they are “rented out” Thats why the goverment is bringing in a new law to combat it. Try listening to the news and reading newspapers (no not the Mail the times or what should be your favourite the Guardian)

That an answer to me elf – not trying to trip you up – genuinely interested. the “yes sir” approach has always worked for me. Including being chased by a cop in a car for 3 miles – I was on a motorbike in a hurry in traffic and didn’t even know he was chasing me full blues and twos Got away with that one

The staggering hypocrasy of TandemJeremy beggers belief. You have the right to add to the huge amount of road deaths because…………you were in a hurry. If you had ran over child would put a little sticker on the side of your motorbike liked they did on fighter planes during the war.

. Gun ownership leads to less death not provealbe of course but I would suggest a high possiblty.

Uttlerly ridiculous. there is a direct correlation between the number of legally held guns adn the number of gun killings in a society. Now now you know thats not what I said. Owning a gun means you have to watch your step as in no scraping. You could easily lose your license by just being in a fight as in even if you were not at fault, hand over your license/gun. And in the case I mentioned a fight was definatly avoided.

Legal gun ownership makes illegal gun and ammunition ownership more likely.

Really can you prove this? How many legaly held have been stollen and used in crime. I have an old pistol cabinet (I use it as a safe) I would like to see someone take it off the wall never mind open it

The desperate need to find some justification for owning guns is really amusing

I don’t own one and don’t intend on having one. And why would I or anyone need to justify themselves to the middle class “liberals” like yourself? I am flabergasted that you think we need to? PS the latter was irony

    THM

TJ – the nonsense starts on page 1 and is frankly pretty offensive to law-abiding gunowners.

And I’m sure there will be many gun owners prepared to stand up and fight for your right to be “offended”

Maybe one of the problems with society,is that fact that people choose to be “offended” by almost anything anyone says that they disagree with these days

And you sound like the sort of person who would play that game as in I find hunting offensive ban it…..hypocrite

    apart from gratuitous gun ownership,

What gratuitus gun ownership you have to have a reson such as hunting to own a gun argh we are back to, I don’t hunt and i can see no reason for anyone else to, so ban it..hypocrite no need look that word up in a dictionary just look in a mirror

Ohh I just thought of something. A gamekeeper I know, wife was sexually assulted on the way home from the pub by someone they both new and lived close by. Instead of going round and giving him a kicking which any reasonalbe bloke with a spine would do, he did nothing, because if he had he would have lost all his gun licenses. The latter is always in the mind of every gun owner ie never get involved in violence of any sort or you will lose your license. the latter is a fact a gun license is easy to lose. And before we have all the pricks saying that fights don’t result in deaths they do knocked over and bang your head..dead. Well a good chance. Look at the newspaper seller and the polceman in London. Gun ownership leads to less death not provealbe of course but I would suggest a high possiblty.

The more guns there are around, the greater the risk that something bad might happen. Less guns = safer. Scientifically proven fact.

Or just let gun owners keep their guns at home.

I’d really rather not live near anyone who had guns in their home. Speshly if I had kids.
Yes the odds are extremly high that they would come round and kill you and your children that happens every day……….no actually it doesn’t. By the way I don’t like cars and for environmental reasons I think you should have a valid reason for owning one. After all there are busses, trains, car sharing, cycling. Car ownership just means people take unnesecary journeys leading to more roads more pollutin and more destruction of the countryside. And no you don’t need it to get to work move closer. Private car ownership jsut alowes people to move away from work and kill children in there rush to get home.

    1. after-pub drinks, when clearly agitated, drunk, without notice etc etc

are you seriouly saying that any of the above is likely to be true of a nut with a gun? Cool calm and collected fits the majority

    2. “work” guns exempt

    Pity why cna’t define that.

    3. Good point, I wasn’t presenting the above as a complete solution.

    4. When you get home you return the gun, at a guess?

And we are now back to where you store it.

    5. Unlikely…and so what? There is no “right” to gun ownership.

I do not drive the nearest nor if I ever get my license back will I. So sod you is your attitude have i got that right?

    6. Paid for be a fee.

So we are hiring police just to sit in police stations doing nothing for most of the day.
Why can’t you be a bit more honest you don’t want people to have guns and you are happy to speed in your car which kills thousands of people every year. Ohh and if you say you never speed your a liar.

    7. Again working gun exemption covers this…how many other guns are used for this?

Neighbour loses about 40 chickens in about 10 attacks a year and there is nothing unusual in that
    8. See 5 above.

As for making it personal, well it says more about you than me

I think you will find that you made it personal when if we followed your rules the vast majority of peopole would not be able to have a gun……no doubt your intentions. That doesn’t include me as I don’t shoot and have no intensions of taking it up I am jsut not spitefull enough to take away some elses hobby after all the death caused by people with legal held guns are merely a spit in the ocean compared to other deaths.

I have no desire to shoot,

    So lets stop everyone else.

    despite my establishment/middle class/

I already worked that out by your attitude see above.

A shooter with a .22 rimfire in semi auto configuration can deliver 10 bullets, each expending 100+ ft lbs of energy, into a small target within 5 seconds. Some guys at the club I attended bought “banana” magazines. Think AK47 shaped mag’s. These can hold 30 rounds which would be blazed off in seconds by the so called responsible, sporting target shooter…

Bullshit semi automatics with 5 round magazines maximum. Further more if what you said was true (ie they were legal) how come the nutters don’t use them? Pity you didn’t report these people or are they just figments of your imagination

I’m close to TJ on this one.

How about guns/ammo used for sport/leisure are held at Police stations, released only when justified (competition, shoot etc), with penalties for late return? Or something like that?

I too see no need for them to be held at home.
1/ So nutter goes to police station and collects his legaly held shotgun and goes home and blows his wifes head off?
2/ The game keeper who maybe using a shotgun everyday has to go to the police station everyday?
3/ The majority of rural police staion are unmanned for a large parts of the day with no set maning times. This obviously assumes there is one near you.
4/ How could you the return the shotgun if you are shooting in Scotland and live in Cornwall?
5/ IF you don’t have car how would you actually collect you gun when the station is 8 miles away?
6/ The police have nothing better to do than act as the amourer for 100s of people per police station?
7/ Arghh the fox is attacking my hens????I know I will nip down the police station and fetch my shootgun?
8/ If you don’t “shoot” yourself why should anyone else be allowed to….opps thats your belief cynic-al

I often find that people like cynic-al suffer from something called envy, you should take into account that not everyone is rich who shoots.

    Yes

Recent gun murders like this have all been legally held guns.

there simply is no reason nor excuse for anyone to have guns except in some occasional circumstances such as farmers.

Everyone who holds guns without this sort of reason is the sort of person who should be denied a license arghh the Liberal (so called) middle class and Troll. Do you work? as you appear to be on this site all day everyday. Maybe they have a “liberal” usage policy for the internet where you work?

Everyone who holds guns without this sort of reason is the sort of person who should be denied a license

So everyone who holds a license and isn’t a farmer is potential (or is it probable?)murderer because they hold a license? Wow that is one hell of generalization. Just like saying all Muslims are potential child molester or all blacks are drug dealers. Genrealizations seems are ok with the liberal middle class when it suits them. Farmers make a huge amount of money from pheasant shooting etc a massive boost to the rural economy which is riseing year on year. Provide jobs in rural comunity when farm labouring jobs are disapearing with constant mechanisation. By the way 3,000 die on the road every year. The bigger the reduction in speed will always reduce the death rate……Something the vast majority of the anti gun loby would go up the wall over. You really need to be less of a hypocrite and get your priorities right PS There are many more murders by ilegal held guns.

Marin_Maketh_The_Man – was shaking it from side to side (as gun dogs do when they catch birds / prey etc)

Completely wrong any gun dog that shook a pheasant, partridge etc from side to side would be on its way to dogs home the same day. One of the measures of good gun dog is a “soft” mouth ie he must find the downed bird etc and return it to the handler without damageing it and most of the time the pheseant is still alive and flapping. Note the same does not apply to terriers as no one really cares what state a rat is in.

I think that my parents dog may have mistaken the terrier for a rabbit, and thought it was fair game,

Not a chance the smell is just as important to a dog and it had already been playing with the dog???????

It looks like Mack is going to be given up to a rescue centre,

They need to know about it sight and much more importantly his behavour to other dogs. NOTE some people will have a suitable garden for it to have adequate exrcise.

but as a last resort my parents are meeting an ex-police dog trainer for some advice,

No downside to that but I cannot see what he can say or do about behaviour which appears to be out of character?

The owner was getting rid of Mack, as Macks dad fought with him on several occasions.

    Maybe the other way round?

Does anybody else have any experience of anything similar happening, or any sensible advice to offer?

Yes and no I worked in the army as a guard dog handler (the more savage the dog the higher the regard for the dog note Maze prison) and an Arms/explosive search dog handler But at the moment all I can think of is an owner who can keep it away from all other dogs AND children or a one of trip to the vets. A second chance is dodgy unless you are happy with the vets bills and a possible risk to people. Keeping it on a short lead does not sound like something your parents would want??

I have about 18 months wood
Because of the latter my LPG tank, which is full, should last about 2 years
6.5 gallons of Sloe Gin (good year for Sloes).
Due to a bereavement been away for over 2 weeks so a bit slow on the cider but have 10 gallons on the go should get another 20 or so done.
Also I expect to get my normal 70 or so apple crumbles made up for the freezer (used, ready made meal cartons are sh*t hot as they can be used in the freezer, oven and microwave)
Have a very large freezer and no one to share the contents with (at the moment, where is the gorgeous bird that I am always looking for…….no I don’t mean a pheasant)
Beating/shooting season about to start so should have a ton of pheasant breast soon for the freezer.
Not doing well on the rabbits don’t seem to want to go in my trap in the garden……..maybe there all in my freezer? Could be?
Over 40+ jars of tomatoes sauces (good year for toms)
A decent amount of dried wild mushrooms (mainly fairy ring)
AND LOTS OF FRIENDS WITH 4X4 PICK UPS OR TRACTORS (useful when you only have a bikes and bike trailers).

“You may hate flashing lights, but at least they get you seen”

Try riding for a few hours on rural roads with a flashing light without going completely insane

Just about useless for seeing where you are going to and if they are to bright they will annoy oncoming traffic and who wants them to wander onto your side of the road?
I bought a trail tech years ago and apart from me wrecking the batteries I have had no problems with their HID MR11, which are 650 lumens. Bought both the narrow and wide (flood) bulbs. Stopped using the flood immediately see no reason for seeing the cows in the middle of the field (nor them me). I actually read a prick on this site bragging about how his flood beam dazzled oncoming traffic who raised their headlights to him???? How does that help you see where you are going?
Trail Tech suppliers stopped making the 650 lumens HID bulbs the replacements are I think 1650 Lumens?? What the hell is that about? I want to see where I am going not the next county? As it happens they now sell an 800 lumen LED light, which I have bought but have not yet swapped, it supposed to be a narrow beam? I will be pissed if it isn’t. The fittings allowe you to turn the light to the side slightly. The best thing about decent lights is that cars dip there lights before coming round the corner very useful on unlit narrow rural roads.

PS I use the Hope vision 1 as a back up only 240 Lumens not terrible by any means although full power is a necessity on unlit rural roads. I use the NiMh hybrid batteries in it, as they never discharge themselves so are always ready for use.
PPS You might want to give the eBay led lights a look, very cheap lots of lumens and I noticed one which you could adjust the focus on? worth looking at.

Life time ban? well clearly that is not going to happen but a 5 year ban with constant testing if the person says he wants to compete in the furure if they say no and then change there minds then the ban starts from the time they say they will compete in the future. Also the 5 year ban for some atheletes is a life time ban?

I have never come acrsoss waterproof gloves even though they claim they are. I have now settled on leather with padding/insulation which are not bulky and can be waterproofed (to the same standard as so called waterproof gloves) by applying a waterproof cream (although some leather conditioner also claim to be waterprooferers). I leave it in the garage with the bikes and apply just like washing your hands takes a minute. do it each time you go out and expect rain. Probably best with the conditiner as that would stop the gloves hardening. Bought the gloves from the market though (army surplus stall so the same type of shop may do). If you do buy them from the internet use this site to measure your hands to get the right size as you do tend to get the wrong size and if you buy as size to small they will be colder anyway

We’ve already done the energy payback time for PV panels and solar hot water heaters on STW, SD253. The payback is a year to three years for PV in Europe depending on latitude and panel type, not the 20 years you claim. The payback on thermal solar is even faster.

I’m currently getting 255kWh/year per Solar World panel. In 20 years they’ll produce over 4.7 megawatt hours each assuming a pessimistic performance deterioration. Do you really think it takes 4.7 MWh
    Stagerring that I missed this 255kWh/year times 20 = 5100kw

In 20 years they’ll produce over 4.7 megawatt

    4.7 megawatts = 4,700,000 kilowatts
    From wikipedia
    Megawat
The megawatt is equal to one million watts

Can you give me an example? Is a quad cree a 4 light.

I meant something along the lines of the MJ872 Magicshine jobby which uses 4 XPG emitters to give out a big flooded area.

All the big branded lights use the same range of LEDs, if anything they seem to be much slower to adapt to the new emitters which come out due to their smaller batches.

Curiously I’d rather save my money and get a better battery setup than spend more on the light head
I have spent a furtune on batteries mainly because I break them my smallest is 5000mah and 11.1 volts I cannot remember the other as it is on my bike. Either way as I am changing to LED I will get more capacity from the battery. IS 800 lumens a decent size LED bulb

I am unly changing to there LEDs (800 lumens)to save replacing bulbs. 1,850 Lumens what the hell would you need that for?? Cars I beleive are well below that?
