Waterproof them with Nixwax or better a cheap spray. Even a bog standard nylon type jacket will last a heavy rainfall but you will have to keep wareporoofing them regularly. Better still as long as you don’t need the stuffsack backpocket get a ordinary walking jacket from Millets almost a constant sale on there and your talking Gortex or the equivalent for 40 or less.

do you believe them? e.g. can you call their bluff by suggesting an sustrans traffic free / tow path type route? or some gentle MTBing… …I suspect its an easy excuse not the true reason.
poly: as I just mentioned on the other safety thread, I commute 11 miles to work by traffic-free Sustrans routes.
I simply wouldn’t consider doing that commute on the road.
It would be faster by road. I could use a road bike, I’d get less muddy, I wouldn’t swallow so many flies.
BUT.. it’d be a lot more stressful and I’d be taking my life in my hands every day. Especially as it would involve long stretches of dual carriageway.
I am an example of the cyclists you gain when you build good paths.
What is a traffic-free Sustrans routes??? Are you sharing with pedestrains?SD-253Free MemberRemember that off road cycle lanes are not for the benefit of cyclist they are there for benefit of motorists.
Absolute bobbins.
Most cycling organistions agree with that.If you are on the road in town you may be getting 8/10 miles an hour on a cycle path shared with a pedstrain 4 miles an hour, or even slower when you have to keep stopping constantly at the extra anti cycling junction.
*checks Endomondo*
Average speed 24.3kmh (~15mph) – and I’m on a MTB-turned-commuter and neither fit nor fast
So fight against cycle lanes.
Please please don’t.
15 miles an hour my arse most people aren’t doing that ourside town. Do you stop at junctions? Are there any traffic lights in your city? Are there any motorists? It is against the law to cycle on footpaths because it is dangerous for pedestrains why has it suddenly become safe. And I don’t want to hear the shite about them being segregaed, a white line does not segragate a child from walking in front of cyclist or adult for that matter. You are showing just how thoughtless you are espcially if you are doing 15 miles an hour. What would that do to child if you hit him. Get off the pavement you don’t belong there.Fight against stupid infrastructure. Fight against pointless paint that adds nothing and dangerous junctions. Don’t fight against segregated safe cycle paths. They are our best hope.
Get on the road where you belong you have no right to be on the pavement stressing pedestrains and putting them at risk.
SD-253Free Member1/ Cyclist need to realize that they are not a threat to motorist so when they come to junction and the motorist pulls out and hits you it was not because he did not see you thats impossible unless he/she has eyes closed. The reason they pulled out is because they are looking for the threat behind you.
A/If they pull out and lorry hits them they probably dead.
B/if they do it to a car at least serious damage to there car and as cars aren’t designed for side impact still a good chance of death.
C/Pull out on front of motorbike damage to car only therefore much more likely to pull out in front of a car.
D/Pull out front of cyclist………what cyclist????????
As you approach a junction look the motorist in the eye it is nearly always obvious is he is going to pull out as he is looking straight through you. Stare at her untill you catch her eye (it nearly always happens) you have now been seen and unless you continue to stare at her they will not pull out.Remember that off road cycle lanes are not for the benefit of cyclist they are there for benefit of motorists. They are dangerous for cyclist and pedestrains (if they share) and they will slow you down significantly. If you are on the road in town you may be getting 8/10 miles an hour. On a cycle path shared with a pedstrain you will be lucky to get 4 miles an hour, or even slower when you have to keep stopping constantly at the extra anti cycling junction. You are already taking forever (comapared to motorist) to get to your destination. So fight against cycle lanes.
On road cycling lanes have significantly increased cyclist injury and death rates (compared to same roads when they did not have lanes) entirely because councils have failed to make them wide enough. They were told to make them 1.5 metres wide but most are only 1 metre wide. Your wheel should be one metre from the curb that means you are cycling on the white line or cycling to close to the curb. The white line encouarges motorist to drive closer to cyclist ie this is my bit of the road thats yours. Complain to council and sue if you are in an accident.
Bright coloured clothing does not help you get seen. Only when you stand out will you be seen. As most cyclist ware bright coloured clothing and helmet both of which helped when they first started being used. I get seen because my helmet looks like a army style helmet. I notice on the occasional jurney into town pedestrains are always looking at it. Also I notice that motorist always give me more room when I am towing a trailer. Of course if everyone did the same they/we would not stand out. So naked cycling will garuntee you will be noticed even if every cyclist does it. NOTE the downside for men is that it would be assumed that cycling course your dick to shrink. Completly ignoring the wind chill factor. Of course the same effect will mean that everyone will believe that women will get pert breast by cycling.
Ignoring all this whining about high death rates in cities total rubbish. They quote figures for A roads in cities but the death rate on Rural A roads is 4 times higher. They are narrower and the motorists are going faster and they don’t want to part with a single mile per hour. I find Rural A roads unbelievable stressful compared to city A roads avoid if at all possible. The same drivers will give show far more respect on a back road than an A road.
Just back from Belgium car drivers showed more respect for cyclist in the city than they did for other car users. Even though the cycling left a lot to be desired. Why? The majority of car drivers are cyclists while it is the other way round in the UK.
I am bored it is sunny outside bollocks to this blogSD-253Free MemberThe best way to train for running uphill is running uphill! Next best is stairs. Although you will need an appropriate building. Running down the stairs afterwards will of course train all the muscles you need for the run assuming you are not just running uphill. You certainly need to train for it, as without it your muscles will burn out very very quickly
SD-253Free MemberYou will alse have to pay the PO there fee for collecting the duty and collect the parcel from a main PO. Postman not allowed to collect money. On the other hand if the seller was to put a price below the current max which used to be $27 then you pay nothing. Also has to write pressy on the import label. Go to the customs site to find what the price has to be to pay no duty VAT and to get it delivered instead of going to PO to collect (charge you 10 pound).

Big hill, high speed, repeated hard braking.
Works every time.Seemed to work for me daft getting it on there mind. Can’t remember how I did it. Breaking will always work…….eventually as you will wear down the contaminated bit. Safer way might be sanding though.
Don’t even bother shielding the brakes when spraying the WD/GT around anymore, complete waste of time.
WD evaporates it could only leave Silcon (I assume there some in WD) on the pads. On the other hand there can be no downside to sheilding the pads. Noticed last week I have an oil leak on my hydrulic brakes on one of my bikes so may need to do some hard braking again when I eventually get on bike again.
SD-253Free MemberI have a Miele, stupidest thing I ever did buying one. Came with a 5 year garuntee, useless, what chance have I living alone, of ever wearing out a Miele washing machine? It will last me forever great, if technology doesn’t change but as it is changing constantly? I bought it because moving to a rural area I assumed meant higher repair bills? I had a gas fitter round 4 months ago charged me 40 pound to plumb in a gas cooker including the pipework and then did a bit of plumbing for nowt. Doesn’t turn out that everything is more expensive in rural areas. I am of course ignoring going to the pub where you meet these people.
Wherever to buy Miele or a cheap washing machine should be based on the amount of use it’s going to get. 1 of you definatly not 10 kids get Miele. For guarantees go to Domestic and General on the Internet they sell the majority of garuntees to the retailers. Go to them and you could get it 60% cheaper.
PS cost 410 pound although it was 6 years ago and never found anything in the seal other than my loose change.SD-253Free Memberzimbo – Member
Yes, isolated racist incidents happened. But they are not more common than anywhere else
Yeah sorry Marcin, I should have added to my post that I was in Krakow recently, and I saw no signs whatsoever of overt racism. I was referring only to the football-based racism, and I don’t for a minute imagine that’s representative of most fans, and certainly not of the general population of Poland. Apologies.
Opps look whose bottled out? What is the difference in your words/behaviour and that of a racist?

Regarding : “Black Bobs House”Pointless possibly, but not racist.
Hardly pointless it was very good way of describing a route as everyone knew black Bob as like the gay he was the only one in the village or any village that I can think of on the Wolds(that doesn’t mean the people who used that term weren’t racist, just that the description itself isn’t.)
I will put you down as a don’t know so 2 for racist and one don’t know?
SD-253Free Memberzimbo – Member
just like everyone has chosen to ignore this
Fish ain’t biting, eh?
Doesn’t look like it……..or are you liberal middle class having difficulty finding an excuse for it.
SD-253Free Memberzimbo – Member
So one for racist then.
I think that was one for “stupid question”. That’s two including me.
surely it was a reasonable question? He was Black and his house was referred to as Black Bobs house. The amount of Bobs in the village is irrelevant. is it racist was the question. You both appear to be unable to answer. just like everyone has chosen to ignore thisA bit like the police and the Social workers denying that the raping disproportionately of white Christian children by Muslims of Pakistani origin was not racism or sectarianism. And nor was the Muslims elders statement racist or sectarian that the cause was a lack of self-respect by the children.
SD-253Free MemberJunkyard – Member
how many Bobs were there? So one for racist then.
SD-253Free MemberThere is a house in a village near me, which used to be referred to as Black Bobs House. It wasn’t the proper name of the house it was just used as a reference point i.e. go left after Black Bobs house. As you can guess he was black and he was (he moved on after 20 years) the only black man who had ever lived in that village. RACIST?? Lets have a vote on it.
SD-253Free MemberDezB – Member
Heard this on the news this morning – didn’t FIFA try to say it wasn’t racist?!A bit like the police and the Social workers denying that the raping disproportionately of white Christian children by Muslims of Pakistani origin was not racism or sectarianism. And nor was the Muslims elders statement racist or sectarian that the cause was a lack of self respect by the children.
SD-253Free MemberCycling is a zero impact exercise on the joints and bones in general (I am ignoring falling off). I would be inclined to get an exercise bike and get on it almost immediately the stitches are out. Physio would obviously be more knowledgeable. By zero impact I mean if I was to go walking for say 5 miles there is a good chance my knee would inflame but if I cycled for a 100miles there would be no chance of it swelling. Therefore bones will be under no excessive impact much less than the walking about you will do. Get the muscles working straight away.

Pus. Not puss.SD-253: towards the right of your keyboard there’s a big button with an arrow with a right angle in it. Puts spaces between lines. It’s very useful
No idea why you have typed that? Unless you are talking about my first blog on page 1? that could probably do with a few paragraphs. But typing that much was begining to make my wrist painfull and I got lazy. Nowt to do with infection just using crutches all the time.
SD-253Free MemberTandemJeremy – Member
that just not how it works. I am a registered nurse. Not how what works? Surely you would have reported someone walking up and down in pain all night? In spinal unit Todmadol and paracetamols were standard for everyone morphine was an extra.
SD-253Free Memberrobbo – Member
SD – rather hip replacement than knee replacement any day for me thanks. Can’t say I know which worse would have thought hip.
Apparently these bone infections like to hide on rough surfaces so worn joints are more prone to it.
X-rays rhuemotologists showed me he said 2 weeks ago “I had bone rubbing on bone or near enough” and “you should have seen doctor about the pain you have been in” news to me right knee inflamed occasional but hardly in loads of pain till infection?
unusual joint pain as that wad the only sign with me (and some weightloss).
Not sure which joint didn’t hurt at one time or other and weight loss was down to much effort/pain to eat. Soon regained weight……….and a bit more besides bleeding home help and there full monty fry ups! “1/2 dozen eggs will stop that antibiotic induced diarohea” They were right!!!
SD-253Free MemberTandemJeremy – Member
SD – its not the nurses fault the analgesia you got -it is prescribed by a doctor and only dispensed by the nursesDon’t agree nurses have a lot more leeway as I found out in next ward where they offered morphine (which has no effect on me) without me asking. Furthermore they should have reported my problems to doctor. In fact failure do so is a “dereliction of duty”. Moreover of 4 of us in the room (not the ward) only 1 had cancer 1 had gall bladder (thought was a heart problem) and the other was an alcoholic who was given drugs almost the instant he asked for them. Again I really pity the cancer patients.
SD-253Free Memberrobbo – Member
Surely your problem is worse? I can still hop around. I am annoyed with the nurses because if they had given me some decent pain relief I would not have stressed the knee so much and the infection might not of taking up residence there. By the way the ward was actually a cancer ward poor bastards having them for nurses. I have another MRI this month last one showed a “shadow” but that might be there for months according to doctors. Also missed out what the spinal consultant said “if the infection had got to spinal cord you would probably have lost the use of legs and arms”
SD-253Free MemberA hundred mile run it was the Ramsbottom something or other it was a one of they never did it again. Well walk and run. The rule is walk uphill run on the flat and downhill. But most of the offroads parts were to slippy to run downhill. After reaching final checkpoint a school had a sit down cup tea and a small scoff and then had to walk out of the school to a bus stop and catch a bus, a train (only about 15 miles on train) and then another bus????? couldn’t make it to first bus stop called a taxi cost me a fortune. Driver carried bag into house and then helped me in. Turned on hot water got in bath stayed there for about 4 hours topping up with hot water all the time. Didn’t do much next day!!!!

Jesus Christ…it’s like Count Zero on steroids three posts up ^^^Don’t get it ???
SD-253Free MemberCan’t abide litter sends me mad. When out walking I fill my bag with beer cans (all white lighting strength?) and Mcdonalds shite. Was cycling long a very rarely used back road very clean not a speck of litter when I saw some cans in hedge had to stop and pick them up. 4 full cans of stellar still held together with the plastic?? Gave them to someone in pub as I don’t drink shite.
SD-253Free MemberGrazed my elbow when I came off my bike mid January. Became painful February but no sign of infection. Became inflamed and inflammation went into hand. Had a proper Popeye forearm, huge it was. Went to hospital gave me a weeks antibiotics didn’t quite work rung GP gave me a prescription over phone for another weeks. Went to see them when left knee & ankle became inflamed and same again with shin. Joints burning hot. No sign of infections in blood. Doctor “it should not do that if it is an infection,(jump sides) stay on antibiotics and I will organize a rheumatologist appointment”. IE no idea what was wrong. Went on Rugby tour playing Hooker. First game ok Sunday game elbow to painful and left leg inflamed again had to go off. Neck hurting all night (hooker so not unusual but wrong pain). Painful on coach back no matter how much beer I had!! 4 days later pain in neck unbearable taking huge amounts of Diclofenic (prescription anti inflammatory) about 10 times prescribed amount called ambulance as pain to much and obviously unnatural. Hospital threw away antibiotics and gave me huge dose of steroids (not anabolic) 14 a day reducing by 1 each day. Took masses of X-rays of all joints nothing there and of course more blood tests (negative again). Steroids reduced pain significantly could get some sleep. After 4 day in hospital took me off steroids nurses (scum bags) would only give me 2 paracetamol every 6 hours. Pain extreme again in neck made worse if I lay down. Walked the corridors all night nurses moaned if I walked past nurse’s station. After a few more days pain in the neck eased slightly but right knee, which has a lot of wear and tear damage and needs another ACL reconstruction had inflamed. Wanted to do an MRI on neck but couldn’t fit me in. Sent home after 8 days appointment to be arranged for MRI. Knee became very swollen and unable to move off sofa without extreme pain. Got some pain relief doctor prescribed Todmadol and Paracetamol every 6 hours. Rung round village for crutches and for someone to go to town to fetch prescription. Peeing in bucket eating 1 meal a day cooked by home help organized by doctor. Went to rheumatology appointment by hospital car absolute agony hour + journey. Very bad luck both the junior doctor and consultant were Muslims. Asked me if I drunk alcohol..yes 2 pints a day average… “you have Gout”. Staggering, had wrong symptoms by a long way. Aspirated my knee i.e. stuck a needle in sucked out tons of clear fluid. Now at this point if I had an infection it would have showed up in the fluid for certain. Gave me a large injection of steroids. Went home, latter found out that next Rheumatology appointment was 2 months time?? Got much worse arm neck painful and knee agony. Doctor insisted that Rheumatology appointment brought forward immediately. Went back again still by car despites being promised ambulance. Driver of transport car was not happy taking me as it was so difficult to get in car. Not got Gout doctor Indian laughed at Gout suggestion. “We don’t know what you have there are 22 types of Arthritis What’s left are treated with Steroids”. Got prescription from hospital for 8 steroids a day. Eased pain over weekend but did nothing for inflammation. That’s was on Friday, Monday had long awaited MRI outpatient appointment. Should I go? Pain still bad. Driver rung me up to tell me he was picking me up but did not want to as he thinks I should be in ambulance. Talked him into it. Said he would ring me 10 mins from my house so I could get to the front door. Bugger! clocks went forward so was still in bed when he rang. Decided not to cancel and he waited for me. Put on right mankey smelly clothes but only a quick MRI scan. 8am appointment they told transport to wait, as I would be 45 mins maximum. Had MRI waited in wheelchair for 30 mins asked technician why. Said they wanted me to have more x-rays of neck and knee?? Had these already weeks ago told them so, “need more”. Half hour after still waiting to go. Told them transport waiting for me, “no there not we sent them away you are going to A&E they will explain all”. In A&E constantly getting different doctors (teaching hospital) asking me same questions “been abroad” “been feeling ill” “lost any feeling in any part of your body”. Constantly touching me all over asking can you feel that, and that, and that!! Staggeringly beautiful doctor asked if she can put fingers up my bum with her students watching “can you feel that” OH yes yes yes yes keep going (only joking). 6pm called head A&E nurse over what **** is going on. “I will sort them out” should have told you by now. Group of doctor come to see me “We have been trying to get Nottingham Hospital Spinal consultants to look at MRI scan but they are having a technical problem you have a severe infection in your spine in 2 vertebra at the top of your spine and the infection is leaking out (in the form of paste not unlike toothpaste) around the inside of your spinal column near your spinal cord”. I am in Boston hospital Lincolnshire by the way. Found a bed for me cancel Steroids AGAIN took 6 days to tell me why But kept me on 2 Todomadol and 2 paracetamol every 6 hours and top up of Morphine anytime I wanted it and a antibiotic drip. Next morning doctor came round and said “we have a plan” While they were telling me it the ambulance drivers arrived with stretcher to take me to Nottingham Spinal unit? A further aspiration of the knee revealed an infection (honest!) which they grew and discovered it was Streptococcus (nasty bugger). Spent 5 weeks on a antibiotic drip changed 4 time a day and an oral antibiotics. Lots of MRI scans can’t use a compass anymore (just joking). Steriods were stopped (2nd time) because they feed infections. Left hospital 5 weeks ago with 3 weeks worth of antibiotics and 2 pairs of crutches (elbow and long john Silver shoulder ones). Knee still swollen not to painfull. When it goes down will need new Knee (according to Rhumetalogist) as badly worn and bacteria has done serious damage. Also need another reconstruction of Cruciate Ligament. Good news daughters are paying for once a week cleaner and home help comes everyday and gets me in shower (showers over the bath) they wash me all over (not necessary I just like it) make me breakfast, make my bed and clean dishes. I have read the contents of the mobile library and order new books from them online (a bit of an exaggeration). Friends take me to pub occasionally and luckily I have 16 gallons of cider on the kitchen table I made in November. Hopefully I will be able to straighten and bend my knee sufficiently to cycle again (need to be able to put weight on leg first) With only one bus a week and no driving license (Epilepsy) I was kind of dependent on my bikes, never mind the pleasure I get from them. PS better story than thorn in the finger. PPS doctors have no idea how the infection got in my spine or anywhere else for that matter nor why did not show up on blood tests??

We laid about 300m(!) of pipe at around 2.8m below ground level. Our garden looked like a WW1 trench for a few weeks.
Started like that so we had to dig it all out anyway. We have UFH downstairs, bigger rads upstairs and mains pressure Hot Water which is nice. Also have a solar feed into the tank but not done that yet. Wood burner is separate – Stoner of this parish is mr renewables and might be able to help. Our worked down to -15 no problem, it fires up an immersion system if it can’t get enough from the heat pump. We’ve had ZERO problems since putting it in, it just works and it’s lovely how the heat is not concentrated to where the rads are.
We looked at a borehole first, but it’s pretty chunky rock where we live and it just wasn’t practical for a few reasons.
Email in profile if you want to know suppliers/etc. We did have storage heaters (rubbish) and a cold house, now we have a warm house and 30% of the heating/hot water bills.
You have failed to inform us of the costs involved and the money saved? Which is the only way to back up your views. I would also add that E7 radiators are excellent nowaday as there insulation is much better ie they use waste very little heat when closed down. A mate who is all electric said his costs on a standard tariff was 50 pound a month all in(2 bed bungalow). Note prior to the recent rises in prices. His house is always warm (if not hot). In fact everyone I know with “modern E7” riadotors are very happy with them. I would never rush to dismiss them.SD-253Free MemberSimple Electric or boiler is based on running cost and investment cost But the running cost has to take into account how much you use it ie electric clearly the way to go in a bathroom as you would almost certainly never save enough money by using the boiler to warrant the higher cost of investment. Moreover can you swithch off the the underfloor boiler fed option or more importanly will you bother? People I know who have electric underfloor in the bathroom always swithch of when not in use so the running cost may actualy work out cheaper?
SD-253Free MemberAnd would it really be all that great a loss to the sport to use laser light instead?
A staggering stupid remark. The skill in firing a weapon is to take into account the trajectory (bullets do not fly in straight line)The time it takes to get to a moving target (the requirement to aim of or put another way in front). Wind speed and the case of snipper altitude (air pressure) There is zero skill in using a laser light everyone would get the same score maximum. You should stick to talking about things you know about and it is not weapons

I prefer the greater and far more macho thrill of fighting in pubs, rather than shooting something what can’t fight back.
Go get a broken bottle, you don’t know what you’re missing. You can prove yourself to be much more of a ‘mayn’ if you do so. Shooting animals is for pansies
I assume this is irony because I doubt you have the back bone to do anything of the sort
So I didn’t say, it elfin said it, surely you can see that I was merely slagin him down for his remark as is obvious?? Don’t you think you should be giving him hard times. Out of order saying I said it lieing is even more accurateSD-253Free MemberJunkyard – Member
If you want to keep labouring the point about this go persuade the army to give everyone a car as it is a better killing weapon Yeah, I really don’t think that cars are better killing machines than rifles and I don’t think he was implying it. I think he was kind of implying people show less regard for other peoples lives when behind the wheel as opposed to when they have a gun. People tend to be carefull when they have a gun…..no pointing and when shooting phesants the right distance apart so even if they do shoot your way they wouldn’t injury you. Understand??

Have i got this right I should not call someone a tosser but it ok to attack somone with a bottle?
NO
you said /implied it took back bone to attack someone
I said nothing of the sort. I think you are making a mistake there I said if your wife had been attacked on the way home from the pub (an actual incident) that the husband would have had the backbone to give the attacker a kicking but didn’t becasue he had a gun licsense. Are you sure you are not mixing me up with someone else?I said your moral compass was broken which would be enough i assumed for you to realise i disagreed that it took back bone to have pub fights with bottles etc
Yep you are not reading my post correctly or you have mixed me up with someone else. At no time did I say it took back bone to hit someone with a glass.

So – is anyone able to provide any actual justification or reasonable reason for owning gunsStill not sure why you think people have to justify anything to you epescially as you don’t think you have to justify putting people lives at risk by driving dangerously. In fact you appear to brag about it.
No one has done so yet other that “I like shooting things”
Sounds good to me, although it should read “I like the skill involved in killing things”

THMSo I guess you must be “offended” that someone might question the morality of gun owners.
At no time has Tandem Tosser questioned the morality of gun owners he has simply implied they are mentally sick. Clearly in your opinion nobody has a right to moan about that.SD-253Free MemberTandemJeremy – Member
There is also a strong correlation between those who get pleasure out of harming animals and violent crime. The very fact you enjoy killing should debar you from gun ownership.
Do you still enjoy driving dangerously on your motorbike? Should that bar you from haveing a driving licsense? Killed a kids lately?
