He’s not a businessman though. He was making money from advertising revenue – any 12 year old can set up a fake blog and do that.

NOTHIN’ CAUSE I LIVE IN DA MOMENT, LYKE.
Apologies, I’m unsure what came over me then. I’m generally waiting for science to finish. Oh, and a cassette tool to be delivered.

Same story here – Two orders placed at the same time, the CRC one hasn’t even been processed and the German one is at home waiting for me.

(Mind you, I don’t really care)

I like Scan, but would hesitate to recommend them. My experience is that their counter service is excellent and their mail order service is bobbins (unless they’ve improved lately). They’re not too far from me, so it’s usually my first port of call for components.

Scan’s mail order is top notch. They used to use City-Link for the delivery but have changed. You have to pay for it, though (but this never stops me). I’ve never had a problem with their returns either, even when it was clearly my fault. Ebuyer gives me a RyanAir vibe.

It won’t explode, don’t worry. Just don’t use your bodyweight on a foot long allen key. I’d be more concerned that it seems tight but rotates as you ride – this gives a chance of scoring and delaminating the top layer.

I’m sure Dr williams does accept that people who disagree with him will challenge what he says. You disagree with him and say so on this public forum. He, one assumes, disagrees with you and also says so in public. I’m glad you have realised that you have to tolerate his freedom to say what he believes just as he has to tolerate your freedom to say what you don’t believe.

With great power comes great responsibility.

No matter what tone I apply to my internal monologue when reading his post, the worst I can come up with is smug self-satisfaction.
But that is with Will Self’s voice.

Is it the way he says ‘us’, which includes You even though you do not wish to be spoken for?
Or is it the way he says ‘us’, which may mean ‘Christians’ and therefore excludes You?

Either way, this poster is someone on a mountainbiking forum and (given the world-wide scope of your argument) unlikely to be in a position of considerable influence within society such that it matters either way.

I’m trying to see it from your point of view, not deride you.

For balance, I feel speed12’s post was measured and humble and didn’t express any superiority like you claim.

these people who want to stay in power are the clerics of the state religion that runs everything…you think they dont actually believe the religion and have done it just for power?
Sure non religious authoritarian regimes do this but there is a clear link in this case between religion and their actions.

I don’t think it’s absurd to suggest that this may be the case.

What do you think religion is? Do you think the bible isn’t written to maintain the power of the church?

This is in effect my point.
There needs to be a clearer differentiation between personal religion (such as one’s beliefs) and power-through-religion.

The former is in my oppinion completely fine (see TJ’s ‘consenting adults in private’) and is in accordance with the central ‘love everyone’ theme that the religious on these threads are pushing.

The latter is (to me) unacceptable – as soon as you extrapolate personal beliefs onto others, especially as a means of control, you’ve lost sight of (dare I say it) the personal philosophical parts and turned ‘religion’ into a hollow shell designed to manipulate and enslave.

Let’s avoid ranting at people in the former category as if they were in the latter.

Well I watched it the same night as I watched Warrior. I ended up watching Warrior again the next day.

    That’s funny, me too.
I enjoyed it, but Ryan Gosling’s blank expression throughout got on my nerves after a while.

I don’t think religion is to blame there. It’s simply being used as a tool for those in power to stay in power. To me, that’s the real problem.

I am pretty sure that believers believe and think it is real rather than just think that they feel better so it does not matter whether it is real or not.

Obviously whether there is a god or not is a crucial issue in this debate

It matters becaus eself reports are a rubbish source of actuial information as we delud eourselves…have you not read a what tyre thread or people arguing on here about how they could have rideen x if they were on y bike [ damn I did that myself last night when in reality I was just too scared to ride it.

Yeah, I know – the worlds within our heads are very subjective. As such, what is the value of trying to come to terms with absolutes such as the existence of God?

While self reports are very bad for finding cold, hard facts, they’re a very good indication of applicability to things going on in your own head, which includes your beliefs.

If religious people use a belief in a God to find happiness, so be it.

Because the period when religion was at the height of it’s power in Europe it actively suppressed free thinking. Think Galileo.

I disagree – The Church surpressed free thinking using its power of indoctrination, with religion acting as the veil behind which it was disguised.

Either way – I’m trying to say one is rational if they have reasons for their beliefs, no matter the source. Rationality is not the right term for us to be discussing.

It’s interesting that the placebo effect has been cited – it is clear that one is capable of feeling better with no real medicine – if the whole point was to feel better (as Ro5ey has), why does it matter?

    scuzz

    More power to you, Ro5ey.
You have your reasons for doing things, just as everyone else. These reasons are vast in number. I am probably incapable of fully understanding all of them, as I am alas trapped in my own mind and unable to occupy the brains of others.

It’s difficult to live life without any sort of rationality….

While that may be true, why is ‘rationality’ necessary when it comes to this subject?

I use inverted commas because I disagree with the use of rationality as a term that can only be applied to thought that stems from direct, hard evidence.
I feel it is more about the beliefs of a person, and the reasons behind these beliefs, no matter the source. As does wikipedia, it appears.

Loum – rational thought requires evidence. faith is acceptance of belief without evidence thus is not rational.

TJ – you are irrational. You are not a computer, you have emotions. You have your own bias the same as everyone else. Don’t forget it.

In other words, I love you.
    You big ol’ human, you.

Nah, that’s all boring. No one wants to tell other people on the internet how good everything is. It’s much better to talk about the things that spark a reaction, something news papers, especially The Daily Mail know very well.

I hate it, it makes everyone unduely miserable. I am unnecessarily politically charged from glancing at a Metro headline on my commute. Go away, get out of my brain!
