My dad first showed me the internet back in the mid-nineties and I couldn’t understand his jubilation at having on-demand access to weather forecasts. The weather didn’t matter to me; I had a world of opportunity ahead whether rain or shine. I don’t know how, but gradually I have grown up; something has died inside me. I think my various dreams and aspirations have dissolved into the single hope that there will be sunshine in the next 5 days.
I became an adult when I gleefully downloaded a Weather app.

I reckon I could do it. Oh, and I’m £50 cheaper

Well, it seems they’ve sent you a free HiFi. Perhaps you feel a day of your time is worth more than the HiFi and that this is suitable compensation.
Personally, I would send it back, and I am a Very Important Man™.

Spend the time you are posting on here emailing them instead, trying to resolve the situation.

Countzero of course I wouldn’t, I value my life (and don’t have the skills or balls). I suspect these guys don’t which is probably why I think they are dicks.

Do you think anyone who has different values to you is a dick?

Large number of sites? How many places can you fly a plane from? Aren’t they called airports?

In a similar fashion to Aunty Mable from Come Outside, I fly my Cessna from a private airstrip which is little more than a windsock, anchor and flat strip of grass.

SO WTF DO WE NEED SURFACE TO AIR MISSILES FOR?!!!!!

    You classy man, you.

So where are they flying this Cessna from then? Maybe some slightly more robust security at small aerodromes within range of London might be a tad more rational solution to this ridiculously unlikely threat.

How is guarding a large number of sites across a very large region more rational then guarding the few high profile possible targets?

    How about the X-37?

    Wikipedia
Bloody awesome, supporting the development of space based weapons, and generally performing awesome orbits for months and months on end.

    SR71:

The Engines are pretty amazing, that adjustable aero spike intake was intended to slow air enough for the engines to actually ingest, otherwise it would just blow itself out, apparently it actually became more fuel efficient the faster it went.

Don’t forget that it was a ramjet/turbojet hybrid – the cone adjusted the internal air flow path to avoid the axial compressor at high speed. Very very very cool.

Why? I could of course have used the generic perspex bag version if I wanted. Or Topeak’s phone drybag.

But the popularity/numbers games means I have neater model specific solutions options available if I want.

    BUT TEH NICHE.

I’ll stick to my opensource 3D printed HP iPaq mount, thanks.

    Why is extra choice bad?

I’m thinking about the choice of phones you can use with your mount, to be honest.

True he could just duct tape it to his bars.

That’s certainly evidence of the utilitarian charm I appreciate in a man.

So what happens to those big third party devices when Apple bring out the new 20 pin connector instead of the 30 pin shown above? Do you need to change buy the licensed products again when you get a new iPhone?

It’s genius on behalf of Apple. Don’t you just love it?
An adapter? But the ascetic charm!

Okay, firm example, the handlebar mount I use is iPhone 4 specific – it has a rubber insert moulded to the exact shape of the phone and all the buttons and ports are available on the outside of the case.

It’s strange that you see this as a good thing.

The public has not threatened their government or police in a way that could possibly warrant this. Neither have the fictitious so called terrorists. This is more like a premeditated intent to murder thousands of civilians. Shame on you Ministry of Offense

If the Higgs Boson gives mass to everything – can we forget about “superstrings” and 15 dimensions of space now?

No such luck – The Higgs accounts for inertial mass, not gravitational mass. The latter is the realms of relativity, which is not within the standard model. String theory is one attempt at unifying the standard model with relativity.

And there was me thinking Science was a fact based objective study of observed &/or recorded phenomena – must have being doing it wrong these last 25 years !!

That’s exactly the point! Do you have any idea how we can objectively study what was going on ‘before’ the Big Bang? Me neither. What would we even be looking for? Until someone figures it out, it’s a ‘we’re not sure’. And after we figure it out and run experiments, it’ll be ‘we’re still not sure, but it’s tried and tested to be accurate within this margin of error’, because that’s how accurate we can measure it with our measuring stick.

Fact is, neither physicologists nor religionists can come up with an explanation that boils down to any more than “trust me, I believe I’m right”

What’s wrong with ‘We’re not sure’? I hear that one a lot. Mainly from ‘Physicologists’ mind you, not so much from ‘religionists’.
Edit: It’s really more like “We’re not sure, but these are our best guesses, based on experiments and logic you can perform yourself, if you want to”
That’s the best thing; if you build your own LHC and repeat the experiments, you’ll come to the same conclusion.

So how do science-ists know they’re not barking up the wrong tree by assuming there’s no “designer” just because it doesn’t look like there was? At the very least it seems a bit narrow-minded. There’s so much we don’t understand, yet we’re convinced it isn’t all deliberate?

They don’t assume anything. They look at what the evidence tells them. It’s a bit like CSI. You like CSI, right? Everyone loves CSI. That’s all science is.
CSI. With less beards and one-liners, but like CSI nonetheless.
