Have a graph, graphs are cool. It’s from a paywalled paper:

Comparative field evaluation of vehicle cruise speed and acceleration level impacts on hot stabilized emissions

from 2005. I can’t view what constitutes ‘Aggressive’, ‘Normal’ or ‘Mild’ at the moment, maybe someone else can. Graph
    From the abstract:

The study demonstrates that as the level of aggressiveness for acceleration maneuvers increases, the fuel-consumption and emission rates per maneuver decrease because the vehicle spends less time accelerating. However, when emissions are gathered over a sufficiently long fixed distance, fuel-consumption and mobile-source emission rates per-unit distance increase as the level of acceleration increases because of the history effects that accompany rich-mode engine operations.

    Yes, it does get easier.
I took great comfort knowing that everthing I was feeling was ‘normal’, that I was neither a monster, nor pathetic. It’s been two and a half years and it’s now all ‘OK’. It’s got so I feel a twinge of sadness now and again, but giving it further thought always leads to a smile.

But then once they released Absolution, they kind of nailed that genre of rock once and for all, nothing more to do there, may as well go peculiar.

    *nods*
As a big fan of their early (pre-blackholes) stuff, everything they do now is met with an agreeable shrug and little grin. If they took it more seriously, I’d say they had disappeared up their own backsides, but they’ve always had an endearing sense of humour about it all.

did the Muse bassist have an iPad built into his instrument?

No chance, it’s far better than that: a Kaoss Pad!
The Beach Boys were very strange – they’d lost that upbeat vibe. Not that it really matters given their catalogue, but I half expected one of them to stop halfway through and ask where he was.

I really don’t care if a question has been asked before. I ignore it and move on. The internet and userbase of this forum is vast enough to ensure there will always be someone who hasn’t seen the question before and may offer up new advice from outside the STW. This would be impossible if the question was off limits.
People replying ‘Google it’ or ‘use the search function’ simply aren’t contributing to the thread. I question the apparent self-importance users exhibit when they feel the need to vocalise nothing.

    Incase anyone missed it…

In last year’s [annual] report, we said that 40 per cent of lessons overall were not good enough. And yet everyone is getting a pay rise. Hey! Something is wrong with the system,’ he said. Schools should be more selective in giving teachers pay rises, he said. ‘It will mean some will get pay rises, some won’t.’
‘As a head, I would make it clear that if you teach well or try to teach well, if you work hard and go the extra mile, you are going to get paid well. You are going to be promoted. Somebody who is out the gate at 3 o’clock in the afternoon is not.’

Overall, I see this as fair, as long as the metrics used to measure whether lessons are ‘good enough’ are… good enough.

anagallis, I don’t think Bwaarp was arguing that China was better than the UK. He’s commenting on the difference in attitudes about intellectualism in the two countries, and how China demonstrates that it is possible to have kids that respect education. Exactly why he is making this point, I’m unsure – it’s pretty clear that we also have high achieving kids in this country also.

Personally I am far more at peace with myself since I stopped beating myself up about being single and alone. That’s the real trick if you ask me.

“you only fine someone when you stop looking”

Spoiler alert: This is the same sentiment! 😀

I was once one of these people but I went on a retreat a few years back and studied with a sensei who taught me how to avoid all this. Since then I have been impervious to marketing and advertising and am able to make informed choices about my needs.

    Did this cost money?

So you’re saying I should just come to terms with the fact I’m going to grow old lonely and single

Oh, shut it, you. You just weren’t that into her. It’s no big deal, it happens every day all across the world, and I’m sure it’s happened to a lot of people your age who have gone on to have fulfilling relationships later on.
In my experience, love comes shortly after you’ve stopped looking for it. Good luck! 🙂

So does pretty much everything on the main line these days, air brakes on rolling stock are slightly different to air brakes on other stuff…

But it’s an external, aerodynamic drag assisted braking device! I don’t mean pneumatic brakes, an actual we’re-going-so-fast-sticking-a-plank-of-wood-in-the-air-slows-us-down-loads brake!
    Isn’t that awesome?

    Brilliant photo!

I dare say you’ll get someone from Manchester or wherever who’s never been to London ranting on about how disgraceful and terrible it is, that some folk actually ride bikes, very soon though.

It’s odd that one of the key points raised in the CM thread has sailed clean over the head of one of the thread’s key contributors. You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?

Well done to everyone who rides their bikes!

Let’s assume that people are imperfect and judge others on appearance. At the level of getting a job, HR tends to be staffed by women. Attractive women may therefore be less likely to be offered a job. Attractive men may be more likely to be offered a job. This was the finding of one study (Ruffle & Shtudiner) although the experiment was done with pictures attached to CVs, [The causality I’ve implied came from the Economist].
Business is people & people like pretty people!

I can’t tell what it is that you want.
Do you want the promotion? Do you want recognition for your work?
Yes, these are both nice things, but you’re letting them both be taken away from you very easily.
You’ve got to get riled up, you’ve got to want it so badly that ‘blowing your own trumpet’ becomes a meek footnote in the history of your (soon to be) awesome career.
You can start with mild social manipulation, before you know it you’ll be a fully blown sociopathic VP.

Someone mentioned Appletastic™ solutions for controlling Macbooks with iPads and the like – be aware that if you plug your laptop in, you’ll be able to control your music from a smartphone or cheap tablet. Although long USB cables are probably cheaper 😉

Yup, an external DAC will make your mp3s sound better. If you get one with non-USB digital in (s/p dif optical & coax) as well as USB, it will be more versatile for things like plugging a new TV into it. I’ve got an external USB DAC (Musiland) and have had to get another one with an optical input for the TV / Bluray.
Make sure you keep a copy of the drivers in a safe place, and avoid the DAC if it’s windows specific in case you go Apple / UNIX in the future (unless you fancy learning how to write NIX drivers…)

Maybe I’m missing something as I’ve only skim read it, but it sounds remarkably naive to think obesity smallpox can be solved if only we had the definitive scientific answer (which there won’t be) to nutrition immunisation.

    Mike,
You are arguing against everyone who is stereotyping CM. This is fine, you are right to do that, I do not disagree with you. The stereotypes are clearly a widely held view, even if they are incorrect.

However, you are addressing the image of CM, not whether it is right or wrong to stereotype. Whether the stereotypes are founded or not is irrelevant. They are there, they are what you have to battle.

With this in mind, if you want mass support, you have two options:
    – Engage and argue with everyone that holds these views in the manner that you are in this thread.
    – Change your image.

Trying to persuade everyone that they are wrong is unproductive. Work with people. Get an aim. Follow through with the other suggestions on this thread. Pull a stunt where everyone dresses up in all kinds of clothing ranging from suits to ponchos to highlight how this is relevant to all. Get smiling kids, hand out free hats and ice-creams.

So there’s no similarities between “common” and “popular” then ?

Are you arguing that common sense = logic / reason? 🙂

Haven’t read any of those, but let’s face it common sense ( logic / reason) is sadly lacking in popular modern culture.

None of what we’re doing at the moment is sustainable financially, environmentally or socially. It’s time we faced up to this.

None of what we’re doing with regard to what, exactly?
There are thousands of engineers in this world working toward environmentally sound alternatives to all sorts of things. Battery development is coming on leaps and bounds, with increasing energy densities possible – we already have light recreational aircraft that are all electric. Oil scarcity will not be the death of aircraft.

There is nothing at all wrong with consoles, but PCs have a much faster upgrade cycle in comparison.

Indeed, the graphics chip in the PS3 is the same as on nVidia’s flagship GPU from ~2005. Since then, there have been 8 new graphics card generations. It’s a little bit mental, really.
