I'd say I like climbs overall but I think even the most harden climber would say there are some they hate.

Obviously I like technical climbs and I love short sharp climbs where you can really push your self all the way up.

Really long climbs are fine too you just get in a gear your comfortable with and keep going.

However there are always some climbs in the middle where you feel like you should easily be able to get to the top quickly but you just cant because the ground is clangy or something. But at the same time the climb isnt so difficult you can just drop to the little chain-ring and spin. They're infuriating because Im always thinking I should be at the top already.

I suppose it depends what the kid is like.

But 4 hours does seem like quite a long time to me.

Especially if your driving and their is no one in the back with the kid.

I do remember being one of them kids who'd always ask are we nearly there yet and found it quite difficult to sit still.

However as people say them portable DVD player now exist.

Did you post the goods before he paid ?

If hes been honest before and he's sent £1370.

I would imagine he simply doesn't have the last £50 at the moment and is probably a bit embarrassed to admit it.

Therefore he's pretending to ignore emails and will pay next month?

The current thinking seems to be that we should should want to be the best at something.

To be honest im not really sure thats what I want.

I work at Imperial College and there are obviously some people who are the best in their field here. However they dont always seem to that well balanced.

Also to be really good at something you have to practice it ALOT. To be honest I'd rather do lots of things a little.

The gap between rich & poor is irrelevant IMO

Disagree totally generally countries with the greatest gap between rich and poor are the least happy and stable.

Someone above mentions "bizarrely" the rich are also unhappy. Its not really the strange basically there will be a large number of poor people trying to steal your money if your rich.

Hence places like South Africa/Columbia were the rich people have armed guards and cant walk on the streets.

Also a lot of kidnappings in these countries hence why alot of unhappiness.

I suppose swinley forest is a kind of trail centre in the south east.

However even with tracks being surfaced they seem to wear very quickly, possibly due to the shear number of riders and the fact there is no official organization to look after them. Although obviously thanks very much to the volunteers from BOB and Gorrick.

Obviously a trail centre in either the north downs/chilterns would be great as it would attract riders when the conditions are very bad meaning the trails in these areas might survive a bit better over winter.

The obvious answer to whether the SE NEEDS a trail centre is no. Where as I would imagine do some people WANT a trail centre is yes.

Plus theres not really an incentive. Most the countryside in the SE is already well used or hoarded by rich people. And its not like the government/forestry commission want to encourage the economy in this area. They want you to drive to wales on the weekend and spend your money there.

Problem you may find, or at least i did, with a very regimented routine is you get bored and/or your body gets used to it.

First half marathon I did I did lots of long runs to train.

The last I had one 4 mile training and tried to run, it quicker and quicker over a couple of months.

I then did two 9 mile runs the two weekends before.

Got a much better time than the first time not sure if it was anything to do with the training mind.

Yeah if you can happily run 7 miles now you should be able to get up to 13 miles pretty quickly.

I never ran more than 9 miles in the training runs for the last one I did and got a decent time 1:45.

If you've never run before obviously its totally different.

Going from 0 to 1 mile
    or
    1 mile to 3 miles
are much much bigger steps than 7 miles – 13 miles.

Im not really sure of the point of this post ?

This is a terrible crime, but im not really sure why people are critising the length of the sentence.

What do they think if their let out in 10 years all of a sudden there'll be sorry and be able to live decents lives.

Or maybe in 15 years every thing will be hunky dory ? How would you work that out M6TTF ?

In reality I dont think there is much that can be done either for the victims or accused.

Like people say the accused obviously need help as well, but I doubt there is very much that can be done for them they are very unlikely to lead normal productive lives after this no matter how good the physiological help.

Also its not like after the sentence there just going to be let straight back on the street.

Some thinking says if you've got back problems comfort shouldnt be important.

The argument is the the cushioning in the shoes stops your body correctly reacting to the impact of running. Allowing the shock to run though your lower limbs and actually causes more impact futher up in your knees/pelvis/back.

This all might be rubbish but its probably true if you tried to run on concrete barefooted you'd probably have very sore feet, ankles and calves.

Personally again I'm not really sure about this advice

"to find whether you are flat footed or the opposite"

If you go and get a gait analysis before you've started running there bound to find a problem. If you havent done much running in years the muscles round your ankles and calves are going to be weak meaning your'll run badly.

Like all things there is some skill to running and surely it would make sense to do some running first to improve your technique. Then get a gait analysis if your having problems.

Although there does all of a sudden seem to be a lot of marketing BS about barefoot running I do think there is something in it. But you dont need any fancy trainers you just need standard pair with a thin sole, like squash shoes.

The problem with Hydrogen cars is the Hydrogen is extremely difficult to transport and we dont have an infrastructure for transporting it. So it would have to be built.

Never mind the problem of producing the hydrogen to begin with.

We already have a system for producing and transporting electricity. So I expect electric cars to catch on quite quickly for driving in cities.

Once this has happened if we can somehow produce large quantities of renewable electricity ie wind, nuclear, fusion. I would then expect electric cars to go mainstream for long journeys too as all the infrastructure would be there.

Erm, I remember in the bad winters in the early eighties, we had normal lessons cancelled and gert big lessons in the school hall, videos (really exciting then, hardly anyone had a video recorder) etc.

Seemed to work OK without closing the school down completley

Yeah that what I meant about doing drawing, it was dead exciting for us kids as we knew we werent doing real work. I imagine it was the same for you. But what videos were you watching ? We're you actually learning anything. I would imagine the educational content was minimal* and they might as well sent you home. Basically the school was acting like a big cresh, frankly if I was a teacher I would nt really see the point.

*although I do agree doing things out of the ordinary does have educational content what ever it is for kids, hence why you should be sent home to play in the snow even more !

Most kids, even nowadays, live reasonably close to school. Most teachers do not.

Just because this statement is true doesnt mean the kids will make it in.
I talking about my primary school in Lichfield in Staffordshire 99% of the kids lived within 1 mile of the school, but they still didnt come in.

Maybe less mothers worked and just fancied letting their kids have the day off. Maybe they couldnt be bother getting through the snow I dont know.

I thought the main reason was if almost all / the majority of the kids didnt get in it was pointless ?

I remember turning up to school in the 80's and all the teachers had got in but half the pupils hadnt.

We sat around drawing pictures for a bit and were sent home around 10am – 10:30am as it pointless us being there.

The teachers could nt teach any lessons as they'd have to repeat it the next day for the rest of kids.

Presumably one of the advantages of a 29er is you need less suspension ?

Therefore why were'nt they invented in the early 90's when bike manufacturers were struggling to decent light suspension. This would have seemed like a easy solution then ?

Or is it just that MTBers were smaller then ? Is this something to do with people getting taller ?

Ie they both use the same solvent, whats dissolved in the solvent is different (probably).

I would imagine its how hard you push your self on either. However the minimum base line for pushing yourself is much higher for running as you cant coast.

So generally like others say probably about 3 times as much cycling to running.

However if you could create out a route where you only climb out of the saddle it would probably be similar.

Hi do you twist you ankles in or out.

I do or did twist my ankles in and have pretty much exactly the same problems.

Obviously if you twist your ankles in you can only clip out if the pedals are flat. Also you have to kinda pull in then step your foot out, kinda a two stage motion.

Where as most people twist out and therefore can quickly move there feet out by just janking them to the side when they need to.

However the musles on the out side of my leg just arent as strong as the ones on the inside.

But with practise it is possible and much better.

squash or any racket sport. played for years, generally new comers are better than me with-in a couple of weeks.

I dont seem to be able to hit the ball in the sweet spot to get generate any power and I dont have any muscles to just wack it.

Best I can hope for is to dink it into the corners.

    I've just done 3 months in London. I didn't bother with the bike for all it was worth, but;

I had a similar attitude when I first came to London and played football mainly for the first year. But then joined uni MTB club, honestly get the train out is the way to go and not too difficult.

From West London the North Downs are perfectly rideable, although during short days you just can't go so far into the Surrey Hills.
Lots of places are within 10 miles of Bank – you need to think about what you do outside work and how that might affect how you live.

This is technically true. But personally would nt fancy it.
I live by clapham junction for 4 years. It was much more pleasent to get the train to dorking/guildford/swinley rather than try to cycle out first.

Generally when I did cycle out I tended to put semi slicks on so I would be not knacked by the time I got to the north downs and I didnt really do "proper" off road rides when I got there.

However you might be much fitter than me.

So it looks like North or West London then?

Well you said you wanted to cycle to bank in the morning. So I dont think WEST london would be a good idea as your'll have to cycle right through the middle.

You also said you wanted to get to the best MTB near london. Now I know theres MTB in epping forest + chilterns. (I now live near Reading and really like chilterns)

But the best MTB near london is the north downs. These are SOUTH of London so you dont want to live in the NORTH.

You want to live near waterloo, vauxhall, battersea, clapham junction. From there you can go to S. Downs and Swinley as the other captain suggests

Frankly this sound more like what you want.

Not too sure about the gets warm too quickly in all situation.

If your in a nice warm pub fair enough. But what happens if you somehow end up getting to the club/bar early and they've got the air condition wacked fully up but theres no one there. Its freezing ! Then your'll be gald of only have 330ml bottle. Rather than a frost bite inducing pint.
