Its a CX race, you should have each of those in the pit & swap bike each lap!

So your pit gimp can wash/service it ready for the final sprint!

Judging by that 4th picture you weren’t the only one happy to be there :D

Is that a rather rusty Fiat Topolino there as well?

Could we press you for a few details of the machining processes?

Do you do your own anodising?

Inquiring minds and all that

The other slightly odd thing is that it’s asymmetric (presumably they economised by using the towing arm from the double version) so you have to try and remember which is the wide side when going through gates or along the edge of a path.

Looking at the pics on the web it looks like a bit of hacksaw/drill-age might sort that.

Mascot work wear is worth a look.

Had several pairs at different times, always served me well.

Have you considered Time MTB pedals?

You’d be getting a carbon/titanium pedal for around about the £150 mark I think.

I don’t know how they compare to Shimano pedals for reliability/longevity (a friend has had a set for about a year on his main bike – not really long enough to say in my book) but they are nice to use and look pretty good too.

He switched to them due to knee problems with Shimano ones.

What’s Colorado like for this kind of thing?

Got a mate who’s heading out that way this year.

    +1 for Dakine 8 tracks!

Well made, comfy & long/baggy enough to work well with knee pads without snagging.

Only minor gripe is they’re a wee bit thick for hot weather but being the UK they’re fine for 99.999% of the time…

Anyone tried one with a GoatLink?

Edit: Thinking of using an 11-42 one with a medium cage mech (probably XT) and wondered if a GL would be worth trying.

I went through the same process of hunting myself a few weeks ago.

Cheapest I could find anywhere were these ones on eBay but the hoses were too short for my bike (too lazy to change hoses  )

    Seller seemed helpful & pleasant.

I ended up with a pair of barely used SLX from a mate…

Just need to get off my @rse & fit them now!

My prototype wood-burning camp shower. Works fine but can definitely be improved. The upper “heat exchange” unit can be removed to leave a simple word-burner should the mood take one.

Books not popular round your way

If you’re thinking of any form of agricultural tenancy I’d recommend talking it over with a local agricultural auctioneers/land agency. Might cost a bit short term but could help you get a better price/terms and avoid some of the pitfalls.
They’ll also know who to avoid like the plague locally…
I’m led to believe haylage in mini round bales is rather lucrative for selling to the sportscow crowd.
Just expect them to bitch endlessly about the price…

Is the chain guide going to be overkill given that it’s probably going to be a SS chainring/clutch rear mech?
Most likely use will be trail centre type stuff…

I’ve been replacing my 230v stuff with 110v as and when needed (or when I find a bargain at auction :D ) for the simple reason that the motors are proper industrial ones. They don’t die easily and I do give them a wee bit of a kicking…
I don’t find it bothersome to handle the transformer. Move it once per job and use extension cables.

Didn’t the castle sort of half collapse/fall down in the middle of the renovations?
Some muppet didn’t stabilise the old rubble walls before digging the debris away from the footings IIRC…

Stayed here when we walked the WHW last year.

    Best B+B I’ve ever seen.

Food at the Drymen Inn was bloody good too!

Uberbike 44/44 headset looks like it’d do the job.

Looked at a 2015 fury in the local branch this week. It’s definitely a 44mm headtube, same as my 2011 one.

The bottom cup recess seemed plenty deep to me when I popped a new headset in last year so an 1.5″ external cup should fit fine. It’d probably slacken the head angle up slightly & raise the BB a fraction but I doubt it’d be noticeable.

    The Cruel Sea, Nicholas Monseratt.

Truly humbling stuff. A novel but all based oh his service in the North Atlantic. The film is remarkable, the book will give you nightmares.

    +1

My grandfather served on convoy escorts for a large chunk of the war (mostly in the Atlantic through the period the U-boat crews referred to as “The Happy Time” but also on several Arctic runs). He said that The Cruel Sea was the first book to come anywhere remotely close to the reality, more so even than some of the early post-war memoirs. The film adaptation is also brilliant if you’re into B&W war films.

Escort: War at Sea by Denys Rayner (who my granddad served with on a few convoys) is also pretty good.

The Shetland Bus by David Howarth is also an interesting book on a ballsy but largely forgotten campaign.

    Apologies for another dim question…

I’m struggling to find a 20″ rear wheel with a cassette freehub within budget. Would one with a screw on freewheel work without needing to re-index the gears every time the wheels are swapped?

Trying to find a setup which will be easy for the girls mother (who isn’t even slightly mechanically minded) to cope with.

    Without phoning me…

Given the tools I find myself wondering wtf you were about to do to it?

IIRC it’s a 44mm headtube on those Avalanche frames. Should be possible to fit a tapered fork if you use an external lower cup…

    scruffywelder

If it’s a frame that you are particularly attached to then maybe look into the non-destructive testing angle (X-ray, ultrasound). I don’t think it could do any harm to ask what might be do-able and what it might cost. A quick google turns up these guys in Witney.

    ^^^ 8O ^^^

I’ve been lucky thus far (if you skip projectile puking all over a newly opened fast food place aged about 6 and aa good few comedy SPD moments).

The best one I’ve witnessed so far was a mate approaching a rather attractive lady at a gig with:
“So, Where did your sexy friend go?”
    “Pardon?”
” Your sexy friend… The wee blonde lass…”
    “Oh, you mean my daughter…”

    Nice wee mill.
What Rpm will it do,and what are those T-slots in the side for?

They’re an alternative motor mounting position for when the machine is bench mounted instead of on a stand.

Can’t remember what RPM they’re good for offhand but they do have a decent speed range for a mill of their time.

Is that the vertical head that was on fleabay a few weeks ago?

I like the riser block too. Never had one but they must make a big difference to the usefulness of the VH.

    Wish I hadn’t sold mine now :(
