    Bike-discount generally,

Just priced up full slx on B-D.com comes out at £167 for both bikes plus the chain rings. Probably go for works components ones. So £240 ish for both bikes sounds like a go to me.

No what you want but there are DH trails in and around Thessaloniki. There has been a couple of Urban DH races too.
Thessaloniki is a good place to look for bike shops,

It was a bit of a clagfest last weekend for the XC races. Newnham is pretty clayey. I’ll be interested to see where the course is as there’s not a massive amount of rocky stuff there. PLenty of steepness though.

so a thin ish mud tyre sound about right.

So its not rocky and drains quickly then jam bo? I have ridden Haldon before anything like that?

I have done about 6 GE’s now and have not used or want to used a FF.
But its up to you, if you fell safer in one do it. I reckon out of the ones I have done 80-90% of the rider have been in open face. And the one I did with qualifying about 60-70% in open face.

I went down the ‘cheap torches’ route – which is an inexpensice way to start, and a very flexible approach when you want to upgrade.

You need 18650 cells – but as I have access to old laptops they are ‘free’. I have a £5 charger from Dealextreme, which I run with an old clockwork timer ‘just in case’… and various mounts for bars and lid are about £1.50 each…

At the moment my basic set up is a C8 XML-U3 on my bars (£16) and 2 x 501b XML-T6 torches (£8.50 each) – one on my lid and one on the bars.

I run the C8 and my lid on MED which gives a decent light for 3 hours, and use the other bar light on FULL when I want a boost. If starting new I’d go for 2 x XML-U3s as the C* XML-U3 kicks out about 800 lumens on full so is plenty bright, and another 501b XML-U3 just as they are brighter… though the MID mode driver current is one of the more important settings and you have no idea what that will be. For extended runtimes all you need is a couple of spare cells in your pack… sorted!

Best of all an ‘upgrade’ to the latest LED is around £10-20… maybe I’ll try an XML2 next!

    How about a Dialled Holeshot?

I have a holeshot, I love it but they are even smaller 12.7″. I am 5″10 and would need a very long seat post to ride it uphill

    OP:

but big enough to ride XC on (unlike the Blender which is Teeny).

    blender is 15″

Why wouldn’t a snap be any good for pedalling long distances, (assuming it fits) ?

there 13.4″ frames, if your under 5’7 it might be ok.

Maybe some U-turn forks are a good idea so you can drop them for jumps and stuff back up for riding around.

Snaps are very small for XC

    As above BTR Ranger: http://www.btr-fabrications.com/products/ranger/

HA: 64 with 120mm forks so with 100mm would be spot on for what you want.

When we planned the race this year I had two times sorted pre event one with wet times and one with dry, when we released the times the Wednesday before the race we looked at the weather forecast and made a judgment call. To be fair we where more we put more effort in the stages than the transitions.

The way we/I looked at it “Gravity enduro”

Gravity= all stages start at the top of the hill and all end at the bottom.

enduro= long challenging stages making the most of the elevation, pushing riders to there limits but keeping them as fun as possible, stage times were 4.30mins, 6.30mins, 6.30mins & 6.30mins.

That’s my take on the format anyway. I go and race for the fun time bits down not the transitions.
