I’m confused by the question. Why would being legally required to wear one make a difference to my choice of what to wear? It’s not as if I have a choice of two helmets, one of which I use for leisure riding and one for races. Can’t believe ton was trolling, as he never does that, so what was his point?

    Eh……. helmet suggestions?

In my humble opinion I think all cycling helmets look shite and unless you are wearing the yellow jersey in the TDF generally everyone looks like a tit in one :D
But I do wear one so POC receptor flow for me at the moment when mincing the trails and not so gnarr DH and full on moto x Shoei VFX-W for the very gnarr DH, only minimal grams heavier than MTB DH full face helmet and I do race enduro (with an engine) also.

I am an uber fast hard tail downhiller and laugh at all the full suss riders when I pass them because apparently they have no skill  Dammit, no I’m not, I have 9″ at the back and 8″ at the front so still on stabalizers at the minuite…………wanders off to purchase SS HT so I can develop some skills

Joking aside I am an OCM (Offshore Construction Manager) in the oil and gas industry.

wish I rode hard tails for a living though

So the consesus is that I should ditch the 9″ of travel on the arse end of my behemoth DH rig and remove the complete waste of time CCDB and weld in a solid bar as I will be faster on some Cotrag SS HT?
Come to think of it I should do the same to the KTM 450 EXC as I clearly wont need it for a round of the Scottish Enduro Championship. Pah suspension is for fannies!
WHAT A LOAD OF F*****G DRIVEL some people talk!
Who gives a toss, people ride MTB’s for very different reasons, some may not need a FS as they are not very fast or they don’t want to grow a beard  but they want FS as they think it will boost what little confidence they have, me I like speed drops and jumps but I used to race moto cross so HT is not for me, infact pedalling up hill is not for me! Each to there own.

O and all you HT boys that pass full sussers at the trail centres you are all my heros! Wish I could ride a HT as fast as you boys.

I would imagine they will have cracked the hydrogen fuel cell by the time oil runs out.
Ormen Lange in Norway has 60 years minimum of gas in just one field, it alone supplies 20% of the UK’s gas consumption.
As for deep water, extraction is getting easier with new technology, look at Perdido in the GOM 3000msw production wells tied back into a Spar with whats called steel catenary risers, 10 years ago this would have been laughed off and considered impossible.
Brazil has an unknown resevoirs, I have read somewhere that Brazil will require something in the region of 120 drilling units, 60 deep water heavy construction vessels, ten deepwater pipe lay vessels and also 10 deepwater intervention vessels and all the other parafanalia that goes with deepwater subsea construction, and thats just to keep up with construction demands over the next 20 years.
So for all thats worried about not being able to thrash your M3/5’s and RS6’s to the local trail centre I think there will be a supply of hydrocarbons for a long time to come yet

you have either used 489 cubic meters of gas or 1383 cubic meters of gas depending what type of meter you have so if gas is still around the 65p a cubic meter range then you better hope you have the new type meter which reads 1 unit = 1 cubic meter. if you have the old type meter……… 8O

I just took delivery of the Topeak Prepstand elite, quality bit of kit and holds the 20kg dh rig nice and stable, nice quick clamps and easy to adjust even with 20kg’s hanging off it, bit more than I was willing to pay for a stand £170, but worth the extra cost!

S7000 thats a toy in comparison to this :D joking aside for anyone thats interested, this is bigger than the 7000 and has a larger lifting capacity, 14200t against the 7000’s 14000t, although the 7000 holds the world record single lift at 12150t of a deck section on the Sabratha platform offshore Libya.

I sailed through the Gulf of Aden last year and it was quite interesting to say the least, to start with we stopped off in the Maldives to pick up our security personel and get the ship “tooled up” this required wrapping the vessel in 4 layers of razor wire (the german made razor wire is the best apparently) to deter pirates from boarding then on top of that there was a 50000 volt electric fence this was so they couldn’t hang a ladder over the top of the razor wire and climb aboard.
Then there were the security gaurds, 2 ex RN officers with triple barrel names they were the advisors, and 2 ex French foreign legion mercinaries who turned out to be a bit handy in there past lifes so we found out. One in particular was once on the cover soldier of fortune magazine letting rip with a mini gun out the side of a Huey in Sierra Leone, he was quite proud of the photographs he was showing us, and quite proud that he got arrested in CDG when coming back from somewhere after his face was on soldier of fortune. He also worked for lots of private miltary outfits in north and west Africa, wouldn’t tell us how many people he had killed over the years but we kind of got the idea it was hundreds!
They also had automatic weapons but these were not to be shown unless of iminent attack from pirates, they had petrol bombs stationed around the vessel also supposed to deter but I presume they would have preffered to get the pirates ablaze!
We went in a convoy of about 15 ships with a German destroyer leading and a Japanese ????? bringing up the rear.
Saw a few skiffs (Somali pirate vehicle of choice) and one or two checking us out but no attack or attempted boarding.
Just as we were entering the convoy check point there was an attemted boarding of a container ship which the Danish navy were close to apparently they took no prisoners and just mini gunned the skiff and its contents of passengers.
Also got told by the advisors that the Chinese, Japanese and the Indian forces take no prisoners, blow the fekers up and answer questions later.

Got three days in a Maldives island resort on the company whilst the ship got tooled up so well worth the security risk IMO.

Go to Arapahoe Basin if your into your back country off piste stuff, absaloutly amazing! always quiet as everyone tends to go to the big resorts, and if yer up for a drive go to Aspen mountain, not the other bit where all the rich got all the gear no idea types go think its called Aspen highlands, but Aspen mountain is  if you like steep and extreme! O and theres always winter park and copper mountain if you get bored.
Enjoy, been to lots of US states for skiiing and always go back to Colorado, although now I come to think of it? Lake Taho….mmmmm Banff Canadia….mmmm Na Colorado as there are so many different hills to choose from.
We always avoid the likes of Vail, Brekenridge, Beaver Creek, places for the masses! Although these places are brilliant get a car and go to the out of the way hills, you will love it and you will be going back every year!

North Face luggage is really good I have the old style Rolling Thunder had it for about ten years, I work overseas so it sees about eight longhaul trips a year with lots of connections on average about 40 flights a year and it is still in great nick, made of tarpaulin type material so also waterproof, tuff as auld boots! And you get different sizes the largest one being a fairly cavernous 138 litres.

If you mean a multi meter? for measuring ac/dc voltages, resistance etc just get one from BnQ for a tenner, won’t be a Fluke and I wouldn’t use it on the national grid but it will be ok for domestic stuff,
Or am I way off of what you describe as a power meter?

They might by half a mile or a mile downrange, but the shot falls from the sky at some point – it’s called gravity…

Sheesh, shot from a shot gun cartridge that can travel up to a mile away! birdshot only has an effective kill range of 50-70 meters and might travel 300 meters with the wind behind hit, although they could of been shooting pheasant with solid slugs which might travel up to a mile?
    Sorry, awaiting the “Guns”

Kin ell just ride yer fekin bike who cares how ye ride, just don’t ride in lycra with SPD’s and no rear suspension, which has to be at least 8″ of travel with boxxers up front and you must have single ring with device

All this XC, DH, FR is all bolloks its all riding, on mountains/hills/offroad I presume, so if mr lycra clad on his carbon super light XC bike goes downhill its not actually downhill? Because he is on a XC bike. I only have a “silly heavy bike” now and use it for everything, granted it has adjustable geometry, can adjust rear travel between 7 and 9 inches make the head slack or steepish and Boxxers up front. Fitted a dropper post and Hammerschmidt to make the up bits slightly easier and if it gets too steep get off and push. I get sarky comments from people on trails like that things a bit daft or over the top for these trails, I say #### em I like the look of big bikes and Boxxers and when when things get steep and big I have the tools for the job, and the 20kg doesent bother me I just look at it as extra exercise, 99% of us are not racing against the clock most of the time anyway.

    ton,
if its a proper MTB you are after what about these, might be more what you are looking for, a bit pricey but proper MTB and the erace comes in at 21kg without pedals ecross or erace
I have had a couple of KTM bikes, not electric though, had an XC which I thought was excellent and now have the Aphex DH which I also think is excellent. Not sure about dealers in Englandshire but Bikeworx in Dundee can get them or advise if your interested.

You will struggle to get into oil and gas even when the work kicks off in March April for the North Sea season, best bet is take anything even if the money is s***e just to get time in the drink. Offshore wind farm (air diving) work is good to get into if you can, rates are good to.
Also do your offshore rigging ticket if you can afford/have time to, its a way into the oil and gas companies like Subsea7, Technip, ISS and many more, then once you are in push for the air jobs, you are almost guaranteed a standby slot whilst you are on as a rigger. Only problem with the big subsea players is they are very cliquey and if yer face don’t fit! If it does fit and you get on well and stick it out you never know you may end up in the bin on the 1500 quid a day superstar bubble heed jobs!
But be prepared for constant knock-backs and a couple of years of s***e before you get a decent hitch.
I presume you have a list of worldwide marine/subsea contractors if not I can give you one?
My advice is make up a list of preferred companies and go knocking on doors, calling every other week and harassing, eventually you will get lucky as on that particular day you call they will be crewing for an upcoming contract and will be short of a couple of bods and hey presto, in this game it’s 90% luck and 10% skill!
    Good luck!

I have traveled by road between Namibia and Angola and the north of Angola to DRC and Cabinda and the border crossings are not a nice experience and that’s with an agent with bags full of cash and on occasion armed guards but guards more so at the tail end of the troubles and have had no end of problems getting from country to country by road, but that is probably due to the fact I was working for one of the major oil companies, not sure what the experience would be like as a tourist though. Would have liked to think it would be easier with an agent with cash for bribes.
Visas can also be a problem, if all the i’s are not dotted and the t’s not crossed boarder guards will use any excuse to try and extort dollars from you, and if you don’t have dollars they will just keep hold of your passport making you sweat until they get bored after say 12-24 hours while you sit on the kerb in the middle of the jungle sweating and getting eating alive by cerebral carrying mozzies.

Which way you going? East or West coast? I work in West Africa Namibia, Angola, Congo (Not the DRC still civil war) Gabon, Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria and IMO apart from safaris and the city of Windhoek in Namibia I would avoid the west coast, not because of the “war torn countries” as pretty much all of them apart from Port Harcourt and Lagos in Nigeria are pretty good security wise, IMO there is just not that much to see unless you are into bullet ridden Colonial buildings in the capitol cities.
TBH though in any African country you have to extra careful as everyone wants something from you whether or not you are willing to give it or not.
As for traveling south to north on only coaches and trains I think you will be struggling.
    I would go

    SA
    Namibia
    Botswana
    Zambia
    Tanzania
    Kenya
    Uganda for lake Victoria
Then into the Sudan if only to get the ferry from Khartoum up the Nile to the Aswan Dam and the valley of the kings then the rest of Egypt, Cairo, Alex.
Then finish off in Libya, Tubruq to see the war Graves, museum, and the world war 2 hardware left rotting in the desert, particularly good is the Spitfire half covered in sand with only the Rolls Royce rocker covers removed from the Merlin engine.
    But by road only?
