Rode through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia a couple of years ago. Absolutely no bureaucracy at all. Not even an entry stamp as far as I recall.

I know a guy who did the Trans Provence aged 60 with a very respectable performance. He’s still riding all the usual stuff a few years later (Alps, Lakes, Etc)

That OGE video is unbelievable. Has a Saving Private Ryan feel to it despite obvious differences.

Brave riders and totally dedicated support staff. Amazing footage. Wishing them all a good recovery

Long haul flights. It starts like a headache, then a feeling of extreme sickness, then I start sweating from head to toe, until I am absolutely drenched. By his stage I physically cannot move. Then I begin to lose consciousness for short periods and then after perhaps 30 minutes, as suddenly as it started, it is gone. Takes a couple of days to recover from the extreme fatigue afterwards.

Has happened to me perhaps 15 times during more than 100 long haul flights over 15 years.

…or spend 30$ on a proven wheelie programme which took hundreds of hours to setup, support an entrepreneur in the mtb community and then celebrate your wheelie prowess with a donation to a Nepal earthquake charity?

    Here’s a hundred miler at 22mph…

…and how many of those 100 miles were spent with your nose in the wind? How can you possibly compare solo rides with the Prudential Ride London 100?

It’s a big enough stretch mixing TT and roadbike rides

Worn chainring, possibly combined with a clicky clutch. Chain and cassette probably still OK – normally easily outlast the chainring.

My son walks to school and back on his own, rain or shine. 1.02km each way with 52m of ascent on his way home according to Strava… He’s nearly 7 now but started just after his 5th birthday. Residential roads with 30kph limit and no pavements.

(Well he sets off on his own but usually meets some of his friends on the way – all kids make their own way to school here in Switzerland) Life is good.

Not going to be particularly helpful for you but I have fitted them 4 times on fulcrum/campag 2-way-fit rims. Totally unmemorable and undramatic. No tape or rim strip. I use a compressor but I’m sure that these would have easily gone up with a track pump.

If they’re proper railway sleepers then I wouldn’t bother. As mentioned above, they’ve been soaked in all kinds of stuff which isn’t exactly ideal for plants (or people). In Switzerland, there are even categorized as hazardous waste and require special and very expensive disposal.

Of course you can also buy pseudo sleepers from garden centers and landscapers which are ok.

Stirling and Luke, you’ve got mail.

Right, I’m afraid that I have blown my invitation load for now. I hope that Google are going to offer me some stock options for propagating their corporate infection.

    Cheers

Glad they came through for you.

My own experience is different. Lies, incompetence, and finally 1 month to process a refund when the bike in question had likely never left their premises.

The absolute worst experience I have ever had in 15 years of Internet shopping. Perhaps I was unlucky.

I’ve got a pair. Great in really cold conditions, particularly snow. I always find heavy winter gloves a PITA to take on and off so these are good. Also good if your hands tend to overheat. You can easily cool off.

They don’t look so stupid on an XL moonlander with 4.8″ tyres…

The don’t however seem to have been designed with riser bars in mind. Last year, I couldn’t get mine to sit at the correct angle on the bars. More of an annoyance than any hindrance to performance. I never got round to investigating fully. I’m sure that there is an easy modification to correct this.

    Interesting – it’s a 2 person team relay.

Slightly surprised that Red Bull are sponsoring such a small event, limited to 200 participant across all categories eg only 35 teams in the open category.

I really really want to love my Turner Sultan but for some reason, the DW link just doesn’t function correctly on the XL frame. It pedals like a DH bike.

For a given effort, you will be slower on a fat bike (except for a few very specific applications which most fatbikes will see rarely or never see)

How much slower depends on the specific bike, tyres and terrain. For me, on a Moonlander with 4.8″ tyres, I estimate a 10-25% disadvantage.

Riding fat requires a specific mindset. It will only be a “royal PITA” if you expect to be moving the same speed as your 10kg hardtail with 2.1″ skinny tyres.

Take the back roads to Silves and then M502 followed by N267 to Monchique. Plenty of nice roads around there.

I assume you’re all using properly calibrated wheel based measurement systems. Instantaneous GPS speed measurements are highly unreliable.

I’ve always been disappointed with car park steering on my QR bikes. The flex is unbearable on anything tighter then 30°. I reckon with bolt thru, you’ll probably be able to manage a full 180°. Don’t push it too far though – 1.5″ headtube and triple-clamp forks are needed for a full 360
