I think this is one I was trying to remember. Is it a mid 80s channel 4 drama about 2 mates in the east end, one black, one white?

I spent a couple of weeks mooching around Corsica this September, mostly in the north, using the train, buses and hiking to get around.

I spent a couple of days in the the Cap Corse(the peninsular sticking up in the north) where I saw quite a few cycle tourers doing the coastal road. There’s some nice remote sandy beaches up there but the coastal path around the tip can be closed if the winds are strong (as it was when I was there).

Calvi is more Riviera in style, beautiful sandy beaches around a large bay with mountains in the background but busy, touristy and more expensive. I liked Porto on the west coast – there’s a great mountain/coastal road to get there from Calvi and Porto is in a beautiful setting with the Scandola headland and the Capu d’Orto mountain behind it. There were a few german roadies in the campsite there as you can head around the Calanche coastal road, down to isolated pebbly beaches, or inland into the hills.

Corte is the main mountain town in the centre of the island and has a great feel to the place – lots of locals hanging out in the cafes – and is handy for places like the Restonica Valley. I hired a hybrid bike there one day and rode around some of the mountain villages to the east – roads were empty. If I was going back with a road bike I’d like to do the D84 road from Evisa over the Col de Vergio (there’s a tiny ski station at the top with a hotel and campsite) and down the other side – took it on a minibus and the views were great – a proper windy road with wild pigs round every corner!
I saw at least one mtb company in Corte advertising off-road guiding around Evisa so that area could be worth checking out.

I didn’t get any further south so can’t comment on that part of the island. Oh and in the middle of summer it’s going to be hot, hot, hot!!

Bit of a long shot this but has anyone done any snow shoeing around Morzine?
I’m out there boarding for the season staying in Montriond – girlfriend is coming out for christmas and thinking of some alternative things to do. There seems to be some routes around Lac du Montriond and up to Lindarets or up the Vallee de la Manche but was wondering if anyone had any experiences or recommendations.
    Thanks.

I was at the match at Wembley with a mate and his kids. Towards the end of the first period of extra time I said to him our best chance of scoring is for zaha to bring the ball into the box and draw a foul for a penalty. 30 seconds later boom! Get in.
Now trying to work out what to tell him we need to stay up.

    Ageing schoolmaster by Vernon Scannell

And now another autumn morning finds me
With chalk dust on my sleeve and in my breath,
    Preoccupied with vague, habitual speculation
On the huge inevitability of death.

Not wholly wretched, yet knowing absolutely
That I shall never reacquaint myself with joy,
I sniff the smell of ink and chalk and my mortality
And think of when I rolled, a gormless boy,

And rollicked round the playground of my hours,
And wonder when precisely tolled the bell
Which summoned me from summer liberties
And brought me to this chill autumnal cell

From which I gaze upon the april faces
That gleam before me, like apples ranged on shelves,
And yet I feel no pinch or prick of envy
Nor would I have them know their sentenced selves.

With careful effort I can separate the faces,
The dull, the clever, the various shapes and sizes,
But in the autumn shades I find I only
Brood upon death, who carries off all the prizes.

I think you need to have a serious think about your route. Taking in all 48 of the contigous US states in a coast to coast trip sounds like a lot of zigzaging north and south. A round trip might make more sense.

If you haven’t already, you might want to check with the hire company about insurance if you want to take the car outside the state, i.e. from nevada into california. There may be a premium to do that. I seem to remember something along those lines when I hired a car in california and wanted to drive to Vegas – but that was about 18 years ago so a little hazy.

Alternatively, split the equity 50:50 then offer her £7.5k to repay her for the half the deposit she lent you. See if she likes them apples 🙂

This wasn’t on an inbred with slot dropouts. As they never had v brakes. The position of the calliper, between the rear stays, is specifically to stop wheel movement under braking.

This is what I was thinking but wasn’t sure. Mine was a dmr trailstar with the disc mount on the top of the seatstay

I tried it a few years ago. Worked ok with v brakes but with discs I found the braking forces would pull the wheel out of line no matter how tight I had the skewers. The position of the disc mounts may affect how much affect this might have but somemone with more experience than me might want to confirm or rubbish that.
Edit: I was using chain tugs too.

Forgive me if someone has already said this, I haven’t read the whole thread, but isn’t the little orange turd supposed to be a flame?

This is my favourite post of the day so far. So innocently on topic and as it happens I thought it was a flame too.

We have a staffy cross. Soft as clarts. He’s away upstairs now to tuck himself in under the duvet…likes his creature comforts.

Yes, but in his dreams he’s ripping your limbs off and munching on your innards.

I would like to have seen Victor Moses rewarded for his brilliant late season performances.

I remember seeing Moses play for Palace a few yeara ago thinking this kid is going to be fantatic. He struggled a bit after his move to Wigan but seesm to be finding his feet now. But I think he’s chosen to play Nigeria now, so isn’t an option for England.

Like others I feel sorry for Micah Richards – i guess it was a toss up between him and Phil Jones and maybe Jones is a little more versatile. Would have been interesting to see who would have gone if Kyle Walker had been fit.

Picking Carroll reminds of the when Liverpool bought him – there’s a small chance he might just be awesome (and I hope he is!), but most likely ineffective. I’m not sure his performance for half an hour in the cup final, good as it was, warrants a call-up when Grant Holt has been putting himself about to good effect for most of the season.

I think Downing is an intelligent player but he has had an awful season – I’d take Adam Johnson, he just seems so much more dangerous when he’s on the ball – can go inside or outside, play on the left or right, cross and score. Probably needs a kick up the backside every now and then though.

I like Wellbeck and Sturridge too, but neither are prolific goal scorers so I can see the temptation to take Defoe. He is a poacher – maybe a 2 up front big-man/little-man combo for the first two games without Rooney?
