Any other over 50s having trouble booking on the web site? Get a message saying it can’t find my details. The details work fine on the ‘find your NHS number’ page but not on the vaccination booking page. Have checked my details with my GP practice and they are correct. Croydon area…

You can get a free booklet of xc skiing and snowshoeing routes from the main tourist info office in morzine. There are tracks around lake montriond up to the ardent; along the ridge from top of supermorzine towards Linderet or over the golf course to avoriaz. There’s a of couple of circuits at the end if the vallee de la manche which are away from the crowds in some nice scenery. Also trails up mont chery in les gets. Not a xc skier myself but i have snowshoed all those areas. Or if you want to ski downhill pistes away from the crowds you could do the circuit at the Grande terche in St Jean. Busy at the Base station but once you get going away from the nursery slopes it’s usually quiet, even at half term. The circuit takes a couple of hours.long trail like pistes through woods.

When was the last time United actually brought someone through the academy system?

I guess it depends on your criteria. There are a number of academy graduates in the current united squad: Rashford, Lingard, Borthwick-Jackson, Blackett (Celtic?), McNair, but none of these are what you might call well-established. Do you count players like Januzaj or Paul Pogba who signed to united’s academy from other professional clubs at age 16? There are a few ex-united academy players at other Premier league clubs like Ryan Shawcross, Frazier Campbell, Darren GIbson, Danny Simpson.
But I guess the best example of someone being at united from a young age, getting established in the team, gaining international honours etc would be Danny Wellbeck? can’t think of anyone else more recent.

Re the easyjet sports equipment allowance:
You get 20kg for normal hold bag plus 20kg for your ski/board bag for a total of 40kg. You can split that weight between those 2 bags any way you want provided no one bag weighs more than 32kg.
I’ve just come back with 4 boards in my board bag weighing 24kg and a rucksack of 14kg. They’ve never checked how many boards I’ve packed.

Ps schnullelieber, I’m in the Marmotte looking at your gaff. Ibex IPA going down well.

I’ve been down the Bec Jaune tonight. I wasn’t around when you were over at the beginning of March as I was in central Morzine with my girlfriend who was over for the week. She’s a complete beginner so I spent probably the best powder days of the season on the baby slopes.
I’m off back to the UK in the morning. Hope you’ve brought a bicycle with you for this week. Mostly slush puppy conditions on the hill.

Anyone in Morzine (pds area) at the moment, how is it? I’m off there at the weekend and the forecast looks fairly warm.

Pistes are in great nick at the moment thanks to the dump we had early March. It’s been beautiful spring conditions this week.

Good dump of snow last night in Morzine with more to come. Spent the day on pretty much empty powder slopes in one of the quieter areas of the Portes de Soleil, except for the early morning fresh tracks rush hour.

Reports of 150cm on the Aiguille de Midi in Chamonix!!

How are conditions in the Alps shaping up? might try and sneek a quick trip out in next few weeks…

I’m based in Montriond outside Morzine in the Porte de Soleil. It’s been a frustrating season so far… no snow, snow, rain, snow, rain etc. If the temps had been consistently a few degrees lower it would have been an epic season. As it is every time we have good snow we seem to get a thaw and rain immediately after. Consequently the off piste base is fairly thin with a lot of sink holes about.
Last Friday was a lovely powder day over in Linga, Plein Dranse and Lindaret. Sunday was heavy crust over porridge in the Vallee de la Manche. Last night was heavy wet snow and today it was raining most of the way up the mountain so snow was heavy, wet and slow. A lot of slides in the off piste areas too.
So usual advice for a spring trip out – go high.

Any local info on Les Gets?

Just found a deal on Airbnb for 2 weeks time but the snow report today is a bit pants although more is forecast soon

Bit worried that it isnt that high and todays price is low for a reason

    Cheers

I’m in Morzine this season, snowboarding. Was in Les Gets last Wednesday and had great conditions, deep snow though maybe a little too much moisture to call it powder. We’ve had two days of rain up to around 1800m though so things have packed down a bit. Forecast for this week is for colder temperatures and more snow and the freezing level is dropping to below 1000m so even the lower slopes ‘should’ be covered by next weekend. On the Morzine side the Stade run down to the bottom of the Pleney is green from about half way down but again this should be OK by next weekend. Just need the temps to stay low for the rest of Jan.

Assuming a majority winner means one candidate has 8 or more votes:

    Number of voters N = 14
    Number of candidates C = 7
    Possible permutations = C^N = 6.78E11

Consider candidate A: they have a majority if they have 8,9,10,11,12,13 or 14 votes. Need to evaluate the number of permutations where this is the case.

Let number of votes A wins = K

Number of permutations where A wins K votes is given by:
    (N!/K!(N-K!)) * ((C-1)^(N-K))

The first part gives permutations of K As vs Not A, the second part gives the permutations of candidates BCDEFG for the given K As

So possible votes for A are:
    k………Permutations
    14……..1 * 1 = 1
    13…….14 * 6 = 84
    12…….91 * 36 = 3276
    11…….364 * 216 = 78624
    10……1001 * 1296 = 1297296
    9…….2002 * 7776 = 15567552
    8…….3003 * 46656 = 140107968
    etc
Total permutation of 8 or more = 157054801
There are the same permutations for candidates BCDEFG. These are mutually exclusive, a permutation with 8 or more votes for A cant also have 8 or more votes for another coandidate, so we can simply add hese up to give the total number of permutations that resukt in a majority winner:
    157054801 * 7 = 1099383607
divide by the total number of voting permutations 6.78E11 gives:

    0.00162

So pretty close to Richmars MC simulated 0.0017

OK, looks like there are practice fields over here. Anyone know of any in the Portes du Soleil?

As an alternative to pointing out what should have been done after the event, can anyone use their depth of experience to point out some helpful resources for people that do have to rely on guides, or are interested in expanding their knowledge?

I wouldn’t say i had a depth of experience but a few years ago, whilst doing a season in Red Mountain BC, I did a 2-day avalanche course with the Canadian Avalanche Association. Really useful, spent some time on theory on snow layering, risks but also managing a rescue scene. Spent a lot of time on digging out snow columns to assess the snow pack and a lot of time practicing with beacons. It culminated with a full on rescue scenario in the back country. Really useful experience. Here in Morzine a few places offer really quite short avalanche courses – 2 hours is typical, which are better than nothing I guess (unless they give a false confidence) but for my liking are not long enough to get real practice in.
If you have a beacon, get out and practice with it including looking for multiple burials. Last season I took my neighbours, with whom I had been off-piste quite a bit, out for a practice search and it was a real eye-opener – took them half an hour to find the second of two beacons!
A lot of the north american resorts have practice beacon fields where a random buried beacon gets turned on and you go look for it. I’ve not noticed any of these in Europe. Practice, practice, practice. The beacon is not just for you to be found but for you to find your mates!

Anyway, the CAA has some useful learning info for a starting point:

    Canadian avalanche association learning page

Now just hoping for some new snow!

Currently dumping in Morzine, about 6-8 inches in town so far. The slope at the bottom of the Pleney, which was a green field yesterday, is now looking like it should. Should be a good day tomorrow.

I have exactly the same problem in my flat (built around 1970). I’ve tried similar fixes, taking the plaster back to the brick work around the worst crack and filling with various different plasters or polyfillers and skimming but they always come back. I put it down to the cheap double glazed windows the previous owner installed, i think the frames expand and contract with the changing temperature and put pressure on the wall. It’s always more noticable in the summer or after a particularly hot day. Not noticed any problems with the external pointing. Will be keeping an eye on this thead for any magic solutions!

Beautiful day today in Les Gets. The snow on the back of Mont Chery was the probably the nicest I’ve had all season. Not the deepest, but properly light and powdery.

I work day-in day-out with an American identity management product. Some of the functionality includes:

Never mind the provisioning etc, WTF is an identity management product? Do you make name tags?

Nice pics schnullelieber – that’s an interesting perspective, how did you get it?

Nothing fancy, just stood on a ridge above the park, about 10 to 15 meters behind the start of the drop in to the first kicker. That gave a nice view over the jumps and used some zoom to compress the perspective. The skier picture was also cropped. Just a compact (Sony HX5). Will take a DSLR up some time.
