as others have mentioned certain people get on better with certain types of food, so with the time/rides you’ve got left try experimenting with different bars/gels/drinks & see what works best for you. I can smash down sis go bars & electroyte for 10hours with no ill effects, while others would be pretty ill

in this mid to upper 20s heat I’d definitely suggest more fluid intake. that’ll also make a massive difference to after ride headaches & reducing cramps. little & often during the ride. plan places to top up mid ride.

as obvious as it sounds, stay off alcohol at least the night before

its why I quit road bikes. motorists either dont see you, dont care, or misjudge how fast the cyclist is going & get their timing wrong.

its irritating, but i just learnt alternative routes to avoid the worst traffic sections, even if the route was longer

not really helpful… but given how rare Wren stuff is over here…., i’ve got a few of their stems & despite the low weight they’re well made & faultless in use.

gore countdown are more toward winter, but they’re waterproof. my last set last 2 welsh winters. in 30yrs of mtb i’ve never had waterproof gloves last 1 entire winter before & I log a fair few miles (12rsh since xmas eve)

DT 240s are the better hubs, better than chris king even. the issue is always price

just for a change.. I bleed from the caliper up. it seems very easy to trap air in the brake lever on shimano brakes. make sure theres no bends in the hose, eg take the caliper off the bike if required. also angle the brake lever at 45deg with a funnel for the excess. when you remove the funnel the brake lever should be fully topped up.

strange that the product codes have changed. Deore XT was always M7– series. original saint was M800, but now new XT is M8000

the gap descent used to be slightly technical at the top of DH, in more recent years most of the loose rock has been removed.
theres still small amounts of snow around that area & as sections of the gap descent are normally wet in summer, expect it to be very wet at the moment.

I’d never say the gap route is technicaly hard or in trail terms that rewarding, if you’re unfit the long drag climb up talybont & over the moors will feel like hard work. nothing steep, just an extended climb.
personally I think the best & most rewarding part of the gap route are the views on clear sunny days

there are significantly better, more technically challenging & fun, bordering on epic trails around this part of the brecon beacons, but as none of them are strictly legal, best to keep that as local info 😉

cwmcarn trail is nice & flowing. by far the most technical trails are the hidden natural & more recently built secret stuff in & around the cwmcarn are

new trail should be open fairly soon & is longer than current xc trail

reading previous comments feels like a lot of people have views without any actual saddle time. i’ve had 1 on loan for 2months & done multiple 5hr rides. its certainly not heavy, 27lbs with dropper post & 2.3tyres.
I really like the way it rides, ploughing thru rough & loose rock sections is amazing. not sure what other bikes people are riding but the b.bracket certainly feels low enough & cornering is precise & fast. as with seemingly all santa cruz you need to upsize. I normally ride a medium, but a medium bronson would be comedy short for me, so this loaner is a large.

theres a couple of issues that no1 else has mentioned, so I will. firstly it feels well made & well finished. bearings are well sealed.
5year frame warranty & lifetime bearing warranty. after owning a sb66 that ate bearings…

I’ve got a couple of negatives, the chainstay tyre clearance is fairly tight, 2.35 hans dampf is the biggest you want in there, or even smaller if you ride in thick mud (they could have made more width tyre clearance as there masses of chainring clearance) the VPP link behind the bottom bracket needs some sort of protector to protect it from rock impacts.

as ever I’d recommend demo test ride for yourself & make up your own mind 🙂

I love minions, but they’re not the fastest rolling tyres. I dont mind a highroller on the rear, but they do tend to wear pretty fast in my experience.
I actually prefer a hans dampf to both

John Tomac. 1st 91 XC worlds & 2nd DH Worlds. cant see anyone ever getting podium at XC & DH ever again. plus hes a really nice, down to earth, mildly spoken guy who was just so smooth on a bike 🙂

senditnow.com is still parcelforce, but they collect from wherever you specify & a full size bike box is £12insured for £50 & price rising depending on insurance value

the only real downside to the place is the lack of trees. when its windy its properly exposed up there with very little shelter (which i’m kinda used to riding black mtns & brecon beacons). on weekends then can also be a lot of walkers.

theres a ton of scams on there. I’ve emailed about bikes in the past & been given the run around. pay by weston union, collect from isles of skye & other such stupidity.
