If you’ve had time away from bikes, or simply need to check in with the current design trends (big wheels, biggerer wheels, big tubes, short/ long, etc etc), you definitely should

    Whoops!
18 yrs between bike purchases, nay test rides, fingers crossed.

2 pints will put you over the limit for many folk in England

    I don’t think it will…

Just ignore him TJ can’t you see what he’s doing.

And just to twist the knife; coal production was on a linear decline for a century to only be affected briefly by strikes.

    The 80’s was **** awesome!

The early and mid 80’s were totally shit!

Far better in the 70’s with piles of rubbish in the streets and energy blackouts, eh binners?

Cite? Drink driving kills around 300 people a year.

    Cite?

Didn’t think it was that high a percentage.

I personally think that our limits are too high, and anyone who says they lost their licence after two pints is a **** liar.

Nothing against the advert, just surprised kittens weren’t being had over it. :)

    Sod it.
    Bought the Clockwork.
Now to buy pedals, a shock pump (they make springs from air now!!!) and some new trainers to match the bike, and my new T shirt!

My excuse is that it is a work uniform.

ETA: biggest of thanks for everyone’s input. :)

Now how about a what pedal thread?

How was it a mistake in this actual case, like in reality though? Doesn’t sound like it was to me.

The clue was in the question:

As I was overtaking him I had to stomp on the gas as he almost swept us from the lane that we were in

Hang back, keep your distance and avoid conflict.

Plus, you wouldn’t know why someone was “swerving a bit” unless you went past.

Not really of any consequence though is it? Curiosity killed the cat, don’t forget.

And get caught up in the inevitable carnage that ensues? No ta.

    What inevitable carnage?
Staying behind allows you to control the distance between you and the other vehicle. If you’re certain he’s going to crash then accelerating to get closer is the last thing you want to do.

I think I’d rather have the trouble behind me.

And to do that you have to risk conflict as the OP did.

    Stay behind, stay in control.

    This isn’t helping! :(

Those Raidons on the Giant are no worse/better than the comparible RS or Fox offering with the same spec.

    Really?
The Giant did feel good and the shop assistant was super helpful which goes a long way. Not sure I like the colour scheme of the Fathom 1 though…

Non boost might matter if it breaks

What we saying, is the Bird obsolete already? It does come in a very nice blue…

I think it looks like a good bike OP.

    The Orange?
I was hoping that I’d get a load of forum users telling me to go ahead and buy it, it does look nice. As long as it doesn’t weigh 40lbs or something I thought it seemed quite good, and it does match my new T shirt…

    Thought about a cube?

No I hadn’t, but thanks for making my choice even more difficult! :p
TBH, the Cube just doesn’t have as special a vibe about it as the Bird or Orange. Maybe I’m discovering some latent jingoism.

I know the sensible thing would be to try them all but I live in a tiny village just outside Cambridge and don’t currently drive, so there are few options (other than the Giant).

Overtaking was a mistake. Keep trouble ahead of you as you can always slow down. Calling it in is definitely the right thing to do.

    What a catch

Unlikely, I also have very small hands.

Not Trump like or Beadlesque, but definitely more teenage schoolgirl than forty-odd yr old bloke.

They’re very pretty, I have done some hand modelling.

I got in there early with “myname@gmail.com”. I’m full of smug!

G6 plus. More power is always better and gets a useful finger print sensor.

What is less useful about the finger print sensor on the standard G6?

Very happy with my G6. Haven’t had a different phone to compare it to but battery life is good (and it charges ever so quickly) and I’ve had a lot of compliments on the photos I’ve taken.

BTW – how long before a non-Apple user comes on and says

    3.5mm, shnarff shnarff shnarff.

it’s not been an issue for me, I just leave the adapter on the headphones.

So if you want to plug your phone in elsewhere you have to carry your adaptor and your headphones?
    What an arse ache.

Am I doing this right? :D

Slowing / stopping is almost always the correct course of action

The very last bit of advice that my (excellent) driving instructor gave me was “if you really must crash, try and do it as slowly as possible”.

    Almost 30mph on the flat

    Pathetic.

Neighbours had a cargo bike at 45mph the other week. Electric mopeds are awesome.

That’s not the way the STATS19 recording works as I understand it.

Not now but I’m going back some way. It was around the time the “one third lie” was being trotted about.

Anyone know what the proportion of car related deaths are caused by exceeding marked speed limits?

From memory, as the primary cause, 4%. Inattention number one cause. That was for KSIs, not just fatalities.

Thank you ever so much for your input peeps, it’s given me plenty to think about. Never really considered FS before as it’s added complexity (and weight) and I like a solid back end for wheelies past school kids but ta11pau1 almost certainly makes a very good case.

I’m sure all the suggestions will be in excess of my needs so will probably get drunk and decide on whichever bike best matches what I’m wearing at the time.

    Cheers!

If you’re going to ride a Vespa PX you have to get used to changing gear by pulling the clutch lever in and then twisting that and the handlebar grip as a single unit.

Cool, you can pretend you’re riding a tuk-tuk!

Or you could be sensible and buy a Honda.

Suggesting a OnePlus 6 (RRP from £469) and a Nokia 6/Moto G6 (RRP £199-£219) is a pretty wide price range!

I find it incredible that people will spend 2/3/4 even 5 times as much on a phone as my £199 G6 when at the end of the day we just use them for shit-posting on Facebook. :D

    CVTs for the win!

Once you get over the weird disconnect between revs and speed they’re ideal for normal driving.

    sbob

I think you’ll find that’s no longer the case

It is still the case because

they can programme the auto box to change gears at precisely the best point for emissions when running through the test programme.

Or similar. Basically they can fudge the test with autos so they always come out better than in reality. They’re getting better but then they still have the weight penalty to overcome.

It’s perfectly possible to actually enjoy making smooth, slick gear changes with a good manual box, just as it is nice to be able to rest your left leg in traffic with an auto. :)

I thought the article sounded a bit sexist

    WTF are you on about?

I mean, it was definitely non-ethno-trans inclusionary, but sexist? Have a word.

All my friends with Huaweis are pleased with them, as are the Motorola and Pixel owners. Customers most likely to ask to borrow a charger are the Samsung and Apple owners, customers with the most broken screens and most likely to get sworn at also goes to Apple.
