no, bit like we’re gonna have a tory government, i predict tax cuts for the wealthy, benefit cuts for the poor and the economy being worse than it was before.

Did you actually predict that in 1979 then?

Hey you’re the guy who knows things in advance, you figure it out.

I don’t know everything in advance, I just predicted, along with everyone else I know who either can remember or has learned what Labour governments are like, that the economy would be up the Gary under Labour.

It’s not like knowing the lottery numbers, is it Einstein?

Thought not. I did have you down as a post event smarty pants, so it appears that I’m not going to be disappointed.

So what should I have done?
Seeing as you are so obviously aware of all my circumstances over the last 16 years. ❓

but before that can any of us here can smugly own up to having made a fortune from correctly prediciting the crash of 2008?

    I predicted it in 1997. 😉

Further to the above managed to semi disassemble it with a great deal of finesse and some luck too. Turned out it was one of the springs on the ratchet pawls had come unstuck. So once it was returned to it’s rightful position the shifter now works perfectly again and is reassembled and back in place.

    No retreat!
    No surrender! 😆

Well done for getting it working again. 🙂

    Rudebwoy,
    Here are some simple undisputable facts for you;

    Coal production was in decline.
    Pits were being closed down.
    Miners went on strike.

    All before Thatcher. 💡

You may also want to take note of the amount of support that Scargill has been shown on these pages, which appear to be mainly inhabited by those of a left wing persuasion.
    Clue: it’s not a lot.

    137 mph – 11/08/2012
    135 mph – 11/08/2012

That’s got to be the same person
    Bye bye license.

Not necessarily, I know of a couple of cases involving similar speeds where a ban was not given.
If those two were the same person on the same stretch of road (getting caught by successive pairs of cameras) then they could ask for them to be tried as one offence.

The maximum permissable error for speedometers is + 10% + 6.25mph, so quite a bit although I’ve never driven a car that was that far out.

Yeah well that might have quite a lot to do with Blair’s desire to dramatically increase the numbers in HE thus both increasing the cost and devaluing the value of HE – plus there aren’t any more graduates needed anyway so many end up unemployed…funny that.

But, but, but, it’s their ‘ooman right to go to university!

What can you do to minimise the risk of that? Bit further into the middle of the road is all i can think of? Bloody terrifying.

Bit further out, try and make eye contact with driver. In that instance the cyclist probably could have got on the brakes, he didn’t appear to slow at all, and I would be constantly checking behind for overtaking vehicles.
Of course, the flatbed driver was 100% to blame, the overtake was not on.
The police need to see that footage, I’d wager that it would be enough for a conviction.

she introduced the idea that there was no such thing as society – everyone is in it for themselves.

    You’ve misunderstood that quote.
She didn’t want people to be selfish, she wanted people to take responsibility for themselves.

“I think we’ve been through a period where too many people have been given to understand that if they have a problem, it’s the government’s job to cope with it. ‘I have a problem, I’ll get a grant.’ ‘I’m homeless, the government must house me.’ They’re casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It’s our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations. There’s no such thing as entitlement, unless someone has first met an obligation.”

I don’t see anything wrong with the tuition fees, it’s like an extra test to see if you are clever enough to go to university.
Borrow some money to further educate yourself, then when you are earning plenty, thanks to your education, you pay it back.
If you don’t earn enough, you don’t pay it back.

I suppose another way of doing it is to rely on those you’ve given the means to make a lot of money to pay back into society off their own backs.
Unfortunately, this is what Thatcher tried and it didn’t work. People are greedy and selfish.

for the record, i work for stagecoach in dunfermline, if i hit someone on a bike i would most likely be sacked, regardless of whether the police charged me or not.

You should come and work for Stagecoach in Cambridgeshire; they’re not at all phased by something as minor as running over a cyclist. 😀

I’ve told you a million times, do not exaggerate!

I was trying to be concise, what I should have said was that Scargill would rather have had miners do meaningless work of zero value, than accept redundancy.

    Does that jog your memory?
Or are you another who sees Scargill as a hero? 😆

    Tax avoiders?

I know you might not read current affairs preferring to stand outside protesting alot binners but you do realise a few MP’s were jailed/implicated recently in fiddling/claiming fraudulently.

    Labour was mentioned.

The Labour Party are “guilty” of tax avoidance. When questioned I seem to remember they said it was “standard practise”.

So are you in Rudebwoy’s camp?
Are you another that thinks we should have paid miners to do nothing, as the unions demanded?
It’s quite a famous Scargill speech you know, perhaps it’s you that is having trouble remembering history?

Of course, you may agree with Scargill, in which case I’d be happy for you to send me money in return for nothing. 💡

I think sycophantic maggie supporters are piss-poor in the comedy stakes. HTH

And I think if you’re going to try and insult someone, Ernie, you should stick to using words you know the meaning of.
    I hope that helps.

To save money on Thatcher’s funeral (which I don’t believe the state should pay for), instead of lining the streets with police, they should put up massive posters outlining the incredibly generous redundancy packages offered to the miners, that the unions turned down.

That way, instead of bus loads of ex-miners causing trouble, they would simply go home and feel a bit silly about the whole affair.

    What do you think?

There is nothing wrong with this move if the chevrons are bounded by a broken line.

Except that chevroned areas of road are often full of debris. 💡

I always think of this video of a policeman suffering a high speed blowout after driving over chevrons, and wonder if there is a connection.

Does anyone have an official reference to this “making good progress” requirement to drive at the speed limit.

New to me and would be dangerous on many NSL roads.

Is it actually just a bad interpretation of the driving test tick box for hesitancy and progress?

Make safe progress is probably a better phrase, nobody is suggesting to drive at a speed that is unsafe, but on test if it is safe to drive at the speed limit, you drive at the speed limit.

The DSA’s national standard for driving cars, which sets out what is needed to be a safe and responsible driver, states that you must be able to make progress in the traffic stream and overtake with consideration for other road users.

It’s certainly how I was taught and how I was expected to drive on test.
Driving below the speed limit unnecessarily is also cited by many driving tuition websites as being a top ten reason for failing.

If that’s new to you then maybe it’s time for a refresher; have a look and see if there is an IAM group near you. Initial consultations are normally free, and overall costs are very low. 🙂

To expand a little, he’s established on the road that you want to join, so you have to give way to him.
    That’s the official line.
