This is certainly worthy of a call to the station. I have two friends who are police, and from our conversations, I don't think that they would countenance such behaviour – even if it was from fellow officers.

Mind you, the advice above ^^^ is probably better.

There's no way in hell he was stuck in the snow, sorry but a Hummer is just TOO capable for that

To be fair, coffeeking, there is barely any snow there. Couldn't you find any better clips to back up your claim of Hummer capabilities with?

This is why it is so important that police officers be issued with Tasers or other non-lethal weapons. It is clearly inappropriate to use lethal force in the context of a snowball fight, but it is also unacceptable that the officer had no proportionnate means of protecting himself against this attack. If he had been able to use a Taser against his assailants he could have brought calm to the situation and achieved the compliance of the suspects without using lethal force.

Or he could have just rolled a few good snowballs himself and got stuck in for a bit of fun…

The only alternative to a Defender I would consider is a Toyota Land Cruiser. Having said that, why consider an alternative?

I haven't the time to look into your precise sizing requirements, but take a look at Nokians. I have just splurged on a set designed for cold/wet weather, and they are superb. That, and I have only heard good things about the name.

Oh, and if it helps: I'm paranoid about having good tyres on my vehicle.

Just be thankful that it was Ford and not GM who bought Jaguar in 1990…

    Ditto Volvo.

I wonder if GM considered the fact that they were finding it hard to turn a profit with Saab might be due to the fact that they owned it.

    I flipping hate GM.

Coyote has expressed what is probably one of the most reasonable anti-fur positions I've encountered. There's hardly anything in there to disagree with!

personally I wouldnt wear seal, mink, fox, i.e. something harvested only for it's fur but as I'm not a vegetarian I do wear leather and would have no trouble wearing rabbit.

Seal isn't actually harvested for fur alone. Or at least depending on the source it's not. Canada's Inuit survive on seal, and use every bit of the animal. So wearing seal can be to contribute to the survival of a whole people.

For me, whether it's seal, fox, mink, rabbit, beaver, or bear, I say 'wear it'.

    I've just come back.

I spend my life looking at late-classical texts and manuscripts, and the fact is that your little syllogism:

The less than competent scribe put this into Greek as "Virgin". So the entire foundation of the Catholic Faith and a major supporting girder in all the other Xtian variations is down to a translation error.

makes it appear as if interpretive errors (of anything) are down to 'a guy' 'making an error'. It simply doesn't work that way.

Whatever you, or anyone on here, has invested in deriding religious tradition, making it sound like these institutions (whichever one we are talking about) grew out of some individual's cynicism or some malevolent collective is to grossly simplify the way history and human movements work. It hurts my head to read the kind of drivel I sometimes see on here, in the same way it must hurt a medic's head to read silly medical opinions, or a lawyer to read someone's ill-informed legal assumptions.

If you want me to be more specific, take a class from me.

Interestingly, the idea that the alleged mother of the alleged Jesus was a virgin is due to a mistake in transferring from the Hebrew, which used the descriptive "Young woman". The less than competent scribe put this into Greek as "Virgin".

So the entire foundation of the Catholic Faith and a major supporting girder in all the other Xtian variations is down to a translation error.

So you're an historian of manuscript transmission and paleographer, are you Mr Woppit?

What a load of hogwash you speak.

Grew up in the middle of Canada with my entire clan no further than about a mile away. Travelled a lot, as we had a place down in South Texas, but only lived in the one place. Then moved away to Quebec, had a brief stint in Nova Scotia, back to Quebec, a year in the West Indies, then almost five years in northern Saskatchewan, two and a half years in Manchester, and five here in Wales.

I just bought for the first time and, after 16 years of wandering, refuse to move. Then again, it's Wales, so who needs to?

The idea above of trying places like Saskatchewan is an excellent one. Yes it's true that Saskatchewan is generally flat, BUT…

First of all, there are redeeming physical features like some gorgeous valleys, and vast forests further north.

Secondly, it is financially booming. Regina, the capital city, and Saskatoon, the far more interesting of the two cities, are really turning around.

Thirdly, nobody has really thought of going there. The province has for a century been looked on as the poor, boring sibling in the Canadian family. They're only now realising that the discovery of diamonds, and other natural resources there are resulting in a financial boom.

I would definitely look up architectural firms in Regina and Saskatoon. Even Prince Albert is worth a try.

Finally, if you want to know more, say so on this thread, and we can get in contact.

I LOVE the government rhetoric that says Britain is well-placed to combat/protect its citizens from Swine Flu, but then rolls out an immunisation programme that take weeks and weeks to touch some of the people at highest risk – never mind reaching the categories further down.

Relatives in one province in Canada tell me that the vaccination was extended to the whole population more than a month ago.

What's up with the discrepency, and why do we put up with such poor showing from our government? :?

I'm always amazed at the depth of knowledge on here actually…

Mostly I'm amazed at how some people with no knowledge at all are quite willing to spout their strident opinions on certain subjects. On the other hand, it's easy enough to avoid those threads and just appreciate the forum for what it is.

In any case, some of the most annoying commentators on here can also be the most humorous, so it all balances out in the end.

Any experience of their mobile phone service?

That really is their strong point. I have used Virgin Mobile for the last six years. It is not the cheapest, but I have always been extremely happy with my phones (all Sony Ericsson), and the service has been superb. I think it costs a flat 10p to call and speak to an operator, but I have never hung up without having a problem solved. Not bad for 10p.

In any case, an unequivocal thumbs up on the mobile service here.

There's one of these threads, what, once a month or so?

In all that time I've never once seen one of the Christians on here say that creation as told in the OT is fact, but there there's always plenty of the anti-Christians telling what the Christians think.

Thank you for pointing this out, Kenny Senior. These threads do become tedious.

It seems that there are a great number on here that prefer caricatures to genuine images. Alas (irony of ironies), bigotry seems to run more than one way.

If you have cable, Virgin internet / phone is good, but if you have the landline broadband, it seems pretty rubbish…

I forgot to mention that it would be landline, as I don't have cable and have no intention of getting a TV.

So on joemarshall's comments above, I've gone searching for other providers, and it appears that, according to reviews, they all suck. What I want is reliable, fast broadband with decent customer service and no run-around when trying to get hooked up.

Does anybody have experience of such a company? :(

I find it incredible that we keep being told that we are well-placed in Britain to protect people from swine flu, yet people like theotherjonv have to work the system to get the jab.

In Canada, they have now expanded the jab to anyone who asks. So how come they can do it and we can't?

    Bl**dy bureaucracy.

    SaxonRider

This would be for a new house, so we aren't moving from one provider to another. The idea would be to use Virgin for landline and broadband.

Unless the STW massif have something bad to say about it.

Basketball is worst bl**dy sport ever devised by human beings.

Basically 10 extremely tall people sinking baskets at each end of a court, running up scores like 2000 to 1998, until the last whistle is blown, at which point, whoever sunk the last basket wins.

    Yay.

The last few days. The combination of extreme wind and rain is unbearable. When the ground is so saturated that the water sits on top and your tyres sink right in is terrible.

As for snow and cold, though, I love it! Give me temperatures like we had last Christmas and I'll go out every day.

Find out who the engine supplier is. If i's a VW 1.9 Tdi, then you can probably get away with higher mileage than if supplied by someone else.

Unless the vehicle has obviously had the snot driven out of it, though, don't succumb to the assumption that it has to be post-2006 and 'low mileage' to be any good. A well-maintained 9 year old vehicle can give many more years of healthy sevice.
