Imagine how your mother/father/friend who keeps nagging you about how dangerous cycling is would feel if you were hit by a car whilst cycling (wearing or not wearing a helmet). Better start driving instead to keep them happy.

If they’re going quite slowly anyway why not just leave it in the granny or middle gear and tell them not to touch the front shifter?

Shop around, premiums for the same medical condition can vary by several £100. One insurer might cover you for an extra £10, another might charge £200, another will say you’re uninsurable! They also have an annoying habit of changing their medical screeners from year to year so don’t allow them to auto-renew (medical coverage is often sub-contracted to a different insurer, and if this changes your premiums can rocket).

You could try a comparison site such as http://www.moneysupermarket.com/travel-insurance/pre-existing-medical-conditions/ but it’s limited in the included companies.
I’m currently with http://www.world-first.co.uk/ though luckily never had to claim so can’t comment on that.

If I was the company in question then I’d be slightly annoyed that the OP had gone straight to a Paypal dispute, however I’d also realise he’s been inconvenienced and annoyed by my mistake, and it’s in my interest to ensure he’s kept happy and by making an effort to resolve the problem amicably.

It won’t matter for playing music, it may make a difference in the time taken to copy music from your computer to the card.

It could just be managerial incompetence. Some one goes through the job descriptions and thinks they could easily combine two jobs into one and save some money. A few weeks later they realise they’d ignored all the additional stuff which isn’t written down. After a year of pretending everything is fine the manager is promoted and their replacement reinstates the old role.

You can have terminal cancer but (technically) be fit for work. BUT that very different to saying that benefits should be withdrawn from that person.

If you’re terminally ill and were still at work before the illness then I think you should be entitled to some money, since unless a miracle occurs you won’t be claiming a pension.

I think everyone is in favour of having a system there for people that need help, but at the same time ensuring that it’s not exploited.

It’s impossible to have a perfect system, so you have to decide how many wrong decisions you’re prepared to accept. The greater the number of fraudulent claims turned down, the greater the number of real claimants who’ll also be rejected. The figure of 0.5% fraud sounds low enough to me (assuming it’s true), anyone think it should be lower?

I should have made it clearer that I meant we should invest in rail connections to our major airports (as well as between cities), to replace most domestic flight transfers. For example crossrail sounds like it might speed things up, depending on which London terminals it joins up with.

With a bit more thought we could even have integrated train-plane systems, where you check-in at the train station, drop your luggage off and forget about it. I completely agree with you on the ridiculous prices though.

We could make better use of the capacity we currently have by replacing most domestic flights with train travel. E.g. Edinburgh-London is 4h30m by train, and it takes you right into the centre. Then we could use the landing slots for international flights. Of course that would require a flying pig integrated transport policy and sensible pricing. Maybe we’re all doomed.

In Birmingham the council have been replacing the old street lights with new LED arrays. It involves digging up and replacing the whole column, not just the light fitting.

If you fancy a bit of an adventure take the train. I did San-Francisco-Portland-Seattle-Chicago-Boston in April last year. Chicago seems to be the main long-distance hub, relatively speaking given the limited number of train lines. It was suprisingly cheap at the time (around £200), not sure if September would count as peak season though. I went for the standard reclining seat (they’re quite large, about the size of a 1st class seat in the UK), a cabin would obviously be more expensive. Either way you’ll get to see some amazing scenary, and you don’t appreciate exactly how big the plains are until you’ve spent a day travelling across them.

after the shambolic and pretty disrespectful way the BBC handled the road races, i don’t even care who wins it.

I thought that was the fault of the Olympic Broadcasting Corporation who didn’t bother to tell the mobile networks they were relying on 3G for the timing, the BBC just took the video feed from them.

But it seems logical to expect that people who are passionate enough about a subject to join what is arguably a protest group about it would have an interest in that subject above and beyond what would be expected of ‘casual’ participants. No?

I agree they should take an interest in the subject, but it doesn’t follow that it should be reflected in their dress or choice of bike. What if their interest is in promoting cycling as a normal form of transport which doesn’t require special effort, e.g. as in Oxford or Cambridge where a “considered choice” might be whether to put on a jacket, or attempt to cycle with an open umbrella in the rain.

Thanks. I’ve just tried to order one but the Lenovo website payment handling is a but useless. Credit card declined multiple times (definitely not over the limit) and Paypal isn’t working either. I might just give up on them and go for a Dell instead.

Brilliant! There’s a sign near a shopping centre that says “No cycling. No skateboarding. No… etc” and I’ve been tempted to add “No having fun” to the bottom.

A bit of Matlab will do the trick… I made a start (was looking for an excuse to procrastinate) but really need to get some work done. It sounds like a fun problem so I might come back to it.

Do please get stuck in and help out. It’s very easy to edit the map, add details to your local area or fix any mistakes.

Apparently I signed up for an OSM account in 2007 and never used it. Well now I’ve just done my first edits, merging in some DfT cycle infrastructure data. Would appreciate it if an OSM expert could check I haven’t royally bodged things up, same username as here.

Thank her for her kind offer, and say that unfortunately being extremely busy you won’t be able to help, however you do have a friend, Mr Diamond, who was recently made redundant, has access to very good fixed rates and would be happy to manage her investment.

So how do science-ists know they’re not barking up the wrong tree by assuming there’s no “designer” just because it doesn’t look like there was?

If there was a designer then they must’ve been designed by a super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, who in turn must’ve been designed by a super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-designer, …
