The top 10% (48k and over) pay 53% of the cost of running the country.

That only refers to income tax which doesn’t come close to covering the cost of running the country. There’s also National Insurance, VAT, alcohol duty, corporation tax ….

Can’t help but astonished that trains not running on the 26th. I’m working then, don’t see why trains should be any different.

Most trains won’t be running but Network Rail will be out in force doing engineering work.

A pomegranate. Or an acai berry (not sure what it is, but according to the adverts it’ll detox your body, make you thin, and increase your attractiveness to the same/opposite sex).

The rich pay a higher rate on a larger amount, that’s why the top 1% pay 25% of the tax.

Have you got a source for that?

If the tax take needs to go up, it’s in everyones benefit (we all benefited from the spend) so it’s only fair that we all contribute.

That assumes everything else is fair, such as cleaners being paid a fair wage for their effort, instead of the lowest possible that their well paid bosses can get away with.

don’t think, that means it is fair that higher earners should be taxed at a higher rate. They are already paying a bigger share of the tax income through the higher earnings.

We could get rid of the 40% tax rate, but that would leave a shortfall in tax receipts, and further cuts will only take us so far. Is it fairer to increase the basic tax rate for everyone, or to have an additional tax on disposable income, which in the interests of simplifying things is defined as anything over £45k?

Depends- some tarrifs don’t include email and browsing within the allowance. My t mobile tarrif only meters downloaded stuff like music and films, I can email and browse to my hearts content without consuming the allowance, even if I’ve exceeded my download quota.

My understanding of T-Mobile was that they meter everything, but if you go over they’ll still allow email/browsing but block anything that uses significant data.

    Have a look at http://uk.moo.com/products/business-cards.html
They’ve got some examples/templates you can play with to see what looks good and give you some ideas, even if you don’t buy from them.

OK, thanks. I’d looked at some central B&Bs but they seemed a bit expensive.

I returned to my car and put my hard hat on whilst emptying my boot, he looked at me as if i had just ate his tea.o

He was trying to distract you so that you’d hit your head on the boot door.

    I’ve got a free ticket :)
I’ve been to the London one before and it was OK though I wouldn’t have paid full price for it.

Another thing I find odd is how some “work” contacts always show as possible connections, whilst others never do. Some of those contacts (both from the always suggested and the never suggested groups) are on my phone list, some are not….?

Could be because some colleagues have uploaded their address books (intentionally or not) to Facebook, and those are the ones that appear in your suggestions.

For £10 I’d go for the High St or market store vendor (I had a ZTE 3G dongle unlocked that way).

It’s the Canadian Ebay site but the seller’s business address is in Rotherham, UK.

Edit It’s probably Ebay automatically listing things on all its sites, it’s on the UK one too: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lake-Pond-Weedshear-Weed-Shear-Chemical-Free-Aquatic-weed-remover-/170906020699?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item27cacaeb5b#ht_1039wt_1156

there wasn’t time or space for 6 of us to stop safely behind him

Doesn’t sound like safe cycling to me…

Depends if the car overtook and stopped almost immediately (50m isn’t that far if you’re going fast).

    Highway code is quite clear

    110
Flashing headlights. Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.

    111
Never assume that flashing headlights is a signal inviting you to proceed. Use your own judgement and proceed carefully.

CTC had a spokeswoman on the radio yesterday agreeing that bicycle and rider registration was a good idea.

Seeing as they’re against mandatory helmets, forced segregation, and regularly ridicule the idea of a registration system that sounds like a mistake (or it’s been taken out of context).

So to summarise the argument, it’s yes there is vs no there isn’t demand for a cafe.

Try a different/friend’s bike? I’ve got two, both 26in, on one of them it’s really easy to trackstand (can almost do it sitting), on the other I can only manage it for about 2 seconds.

Can you be a bit more (well a lot more) ambitious with your next career plan? Basically go over the top, make it seem like you’re really ambitious, want to become CTO or whatever, blow your own trumpet, and subtly point out that you’re so brilliant another company is likely to want your skills. You’ve found out you won’t be forced to fulfil it, yet you’ll have given the impression that you ready to move up (or on). Remember it’s all about appearances. At least in writing you’ve got more time to come up with some bullshit.

Are you saying Bristol has so many cafes there’s no way another one can survive (regardless of bikes or not)?

Try LibreOffice/OpenOffice. There’s no way you’ll need any of the fancy features at school. The only thing to beware of is that sometimes the formatting gets messed up if you keep jumping between LibreOffice and MSOffice, especially presentations. If you save as a PDF they’ll be no problems.

why is software always seen as something that should be available for free just ‘cos someone has a bit of hardware available that uses it?

The OP was asking for something cheaper, not necessarily free. If you were talking about open-source, that’s another debate :)

I’d be surprised if it cost more than £10 to get the N95 unlocked at an independent phone store.

Do you have to be there on the 29th, or would early on the 30th do? You could fly Edinburgh to Frankfurt, then get the night train to Berlin (arrives 07:19).

If you’ve got a phone cam try using it and play around with the options. It might turn out to be a pile of crap, but if you work out why/what you don’t like about it you can use that to decide what to look out for on a P&S. Alternatively it might turn out to be perfectly good in which case no need to spend any money.

The bike-shop-cafe combination has been working in Oxford for a while, I think they were the first cafe in Oxford to offer a flat white :)
    http://zappisbikecafe.com/

The old Oxford Cycle Workshop co-op used to do a lot of community work (including working with schools, the homeless, teaching bike maintenance), partly funded by grants. Sadly they went under but have now reincarnated as the Broken Spoke Bike Coop.

BREAKING NEWS: Politician behaves like a politician.

And on a more serious note, if you’re a Tory would you rather have a Labour majority or a LabDem coalition, (and vice-versa if you support Labour)?

Something to stop my headphone cable getting tangled up (with minimal faff).
Protective (sun)glasses case which doesn’t take up more room than absolutely necessary (e.g. some sort of semi-flexible sheet so that it can be tightly wrapped, but prevents scratches/arms being ripped off).
    Anti-light-switching-on-in-bag-and-draining-batteries device.

Considering it since I’ll be in Birmingham, though it does feel like you’re paying for the chance to walk round loads of shops.

Videos will be the main data usage along with downloading large files or lots of music, most other things should be OK. Check what kind of data cap it is, some networks let you go over but throttle your connection. If it’s the sort of cap where they cut you off or charge you they should have a webpage where you can check how much you’ve used.

If you’ve got wifi at home/work enable it on your phone, that’ll cut down on your limited data usage.

Headphones: whatever you’d use with any other music player, there’s probably loads of recommendations on this forum depending on what kind you want (e.g. discrete in-ear, or massive over-ear ones).
