    £0: got some clippers.
Never tried doing it myself though, is it as easy as it sounds?

You can always look up the tracking number when it arrives to see when it was sent. If it doesn’t arrive can you get a credit card chargeback?

No need to buy Powerbalance Bands. I’ve developed a new way to transmit the energy forces generated by the bands over the internet- it works by creating an unnoticable flicker on your monitor at a frequency that’s synchronised with your brain waves and muscle twitches. Just send me your credit card details.

I don’t think the amount of yeast or proving temperature will make too much difference- it’ll just take longer to rise. A slower rise is meant to improve the texture- if you want bread first thing in the morning you can do the second proving overnight somewhere cool (e.g. fridge), then pop it into the oven as soon as you get up.

Regarding the difference in CD transports, I had no idea what one was so Googled it, and came up with an article on timing jitter

There’s three groups. The first likes to absorb all the sales guff, has too much money and equates “best performance” to “best marketing”. The second is the “works and is good enough” group. The third group is happy to spend the extra if there’s evidence that it really is better.

Strange, I’ve never had a problem with dry bread, and I normally just estimate amounts.
Have you tried a second rising? Knead the dough like like in the recipe but leave it to rise in the mixing bowl (cover with a damp towel). Once it’s risen give it a very gentle knead, then shape it or put it in a tin, and leave to rise the second time. Then bake.
Not sure if this makes a difference, but I usually preheat the oven to max, then turn it down to 190-200C after putting the bread in.

It’s probably too late to sign up now, though no harm in doing so for next time. I’ve used the bikes a few times, they’re not exactly lightweight but they’re fun to cruise around London on. If there’s industrial action everyone will be clamouring for the bikes and TFL may not have time to redistribute them.

Give it a week or two, then if you actually want the job (as opposed to just applying because you thought you should do something) give them a call to show you’re interested.

Why don’t we just keep GMT and make everyone get up earlier/later?

Do the PhD, but remember to add on an extra year to cover overrunning/vivas/paperwork. Providing your supervisor isn’t breathing down your neck you should be able to find time to make regular visits to Helsinki in the first two years (that’s when you think you’re working really hard and doing useful stuff, then you get to the 3rd year and realise most of it was useless). If you’re looking to work abroad a PhD should help… I hope… I’ll find out next year.

92% of drugs passed by animal tests immediately fail when first tried on humans because they’re useless, dangerous or both.

Even assuming that statistic is true it’s the wrong one. You need to compare it to the proportion of drugs which would fail human tests in the absence of animal tests. Similarly for all other comparisons- the proportion of passes/fails is irrelevant, it’s the difference between what the figures would be with and without animal testing that matters.

Shall we extend this to anything Government funded? If you choose to work for EDS/Capita/hospital PFI or anyone else overcharging the Government for substandard work you should pay a “fleecing the government tax”.

Charging people to study for a degree doesn’t take into account the desirability of an educated population, or that research is one of the few areas in which the UK is a world leader. E.g. say you want to go into biomedical research, or become a teacher. You’re going to have to pay off your fees, maybe struggle through a PhD (often partially self-funded), then go into a job which isn’t that well paid in the first place despite the benefits it brings to the country.

I meant that pedestrians having the right of way is respected, regardless of what the law says.

The key point: “On foot has the right of way”.
If you hit a pedestrian or cyclist you’re assumed to be at fault unless there’s evidence to the contrary. IIRC last time it was mooted here the motoring lobby complained people would be throwing themselves under cars so they could claim compensation.

Finisterre of Howies. They’re light enough that you can pack an extra one in case it’s too cold.

Aye. If you refuse to give a specimen at the roadside you can also be charged with drink driving remember.

No you can’t. You can be done for ‘Failing to provide a specimen for analysis’, however.

If you’re over the limit and driving then you’re posing an imminent danger to the public. Similarly the police have the right to search a house without a warrant if they suspect a child is in imminent danger (at least that’s what they told me when they were looking for a child belonging to a past occupant).

OTOH requiring someone to hand over their encryption keys is only of use for gathering evidence after a suspected crime (or as part of a fishing expedition). Searching a building with a warrant is a passive process- it doesn’t require you to actively do anything.

Doesn’t seem ambiguous- if you’re not wearing footwear then there’s no way it can prevent you using the controls. What about naked driving?

Loads of smaller coffee shops have free wifi (might need to ask for the password). Starbucks have free wifi if you get one of their loyalty cards. Depending on how often you’re in airports/train stations PAYG 3G might work out cheaper on those occasions.

Random mutations occur and will slowly spread through a population if they’re beneficial whereas GM plants can be planted en-mass in an environment which hasn’t had a chance to evolve in response, a bit like introducing a species from one continent onto another.

Oh right – “No GM gooood, make money baaaaad”…

Actually I’m not anti-GM at all (I spend part of my time in a lab making fruit flies glow green), but as with anything there’s a balance between the benefits of GM and the dangers, including ones which have a very small likelihood of occurring but could potentially cause major problems.
So far the behaviour of companies such as Monsanto suggests they place too much emphasis on profit and wanting to control global food markets irrespective of the consequences to people.

Can it help alleviate hunger? Yes.
Will it? No, at least not as far as the big multinationals are concerned. They could use it to develop crops which are more resistant to pests/drought in countries which are short of food, or to produce drugs/vaccines/vitamins, but that’s not going to make them money.

Howies once sold some custom designed Timbuk2 bags, but I think the current one is made by someone else. The only label on mine just says “Black Chevron Bag, NYLON, MADE IN CHINA”.

I've got Fedora on my Laptop, Ubuntu netbook edition on my netbook, both dual boots. The odd bit of hardware isn't supported (e.g. winmodems) but everything else including works fine. The wireless on my netbook didn't work until I'd installed all the updates- so if it's a recent model you might want to have a wired ethernet connection on standby.

Haven't used any 3G cards, only 3G USB modems, both the ones I've tried worked fine.

What distro do you use at work? If it's not something niche I'd go along with that since you'll be more familiar with it if there's any problems.

I avoid buying white things so everything gets chucked in together. Ironing… never bother (though on the very rare occasions that I've had I agree it's quite relaxing, and satisfying when you get that perfectly ironed shirt).

hahaha- you think THAT'S bad – it's not unkown for a PFI funder to build the project and contract the supply of the project for £xMillion/yr over 20 years, then 5 years in go bankrupt and their only saleable asset (the contract) is sold to a third party (with the same directors)who then tell the NHS that either they stump up an extra £yMillion/yr or their nice new hospital will be flattened to make way for shops/houses/whatever.
So how does that work? Are you really saying there's no penalty clause in the contract for early termination?

Why aren't you charged extra for the freedom to scan and pack items at your leisure, instead of in a mad rush with the cashier throwing items at you?

Would you rather queue for one manned checkout or four self scan ones?

Still, it's not (IMO) the best way to learn, to my mind criticising and being criticised is a far better method

Probably. So where do you go for that though?[/quote]

You could join Flickr and look for a suitable group (though most seem to be aimed at increasing comments and views rather than proper criticism).

Try searching on this site for something that looks the same:

Once you've narrowed it down try searching your favourite online bike shop, or just go to your LBS.

CatEye LD600 (or whatever the latest version is). I've had it 6 years, with and without mudguards, on and off road (mostly when I've forgotten to take it off).
