7Mesh MK3’s are without doubt the most comfortable I’ve ever worn by a country mile. Make my old FS260 Pro’s from Endura feel cheap and poor in comparison. Insanely comfortable, super durable and while they’re not cheap, they’re not mega high-end Assos money either!

Been using 7mesh bibs for the last 3 or 4 years and I agree with you. And not very expensive

I’d like to give it a go on my sscx. What sort of gearing you single speeders you use normally now that is dry? I know it’s quite personal. Done many races on ss mtb and I have it dialled but on the cross bike off road…where to start? I’m a spinner, commuting on 38×18 or 38×16 for fast cadence. 38×22 would be a good starting point?

I’m doing this sort of competition for first time and hope the one starting after me doesn’t catch me.
I know this hill very well but looking at last year event results I expect being in the middle of the pack.
    Good luck all.

You have to start the recovery before you finish the ride. I took 2 Torq recovery drinks while riding the South Downs Way last Saturday/Sunday and I’ve been cycling to work every single day which also speeds up recovery. I feel ok but not at my best obviously. This weekend I’m riding 500km on the mtb over 3 days but I don’t expect to break any speed record! I’ve done lots of long distance rides/races this past 2 years and that helps. Keep the blood flowing!

Congratulations Dr. P. I know you from Gorrick winter series (ss and long hair and beard)
I’m planning to do the SDW very soon and was looking for the official gpx route. Then I’ve realized there’s no official way, or at least I found several variations and the web search took me to this thread.
Just stolen your strava file and may use that one.
Some people took left following MOnarch’s way Just before Beacon Hill (20km)but you followed road towards the right.
Is it suicide on cross bike with g one 35c tyres? No much experience off road on them.
    Cheers

I ride single speed and love the instant engagement of Onyx hub on low speed technical terrain. It does make a big difference. It is also a very strong hub and gives me lots of confidence. Don’t care much about the extra weight in centre of wheel.
For different less techy terrain I wouldn’t care much about a fast engagement.
What are those NOBL hubs? Just recently heard of them. Similar to Onyx?

I lock/unlock it all the time using the remote as I ride single speed and stand a lot on climbs.

First time for me. Doing the long distance on the cross single speed commuter. A bit worried about the traffic jams on the sharp climbs.
    16000 riders!!

Yes, it was a fantastic course. As usual in gorrick races. Very happy also to see lots of riders on the single speed category.
    Congrats for your podium, DrP.
My race…ok, first 2 laps fine but the last 3 I was dead. Looking forward for R2 in January

I’ve registered for the long one and don’t even have a bike for this. In the process of building one.

MB Race is the only event like this I’ve done – but I really enjoyed it. Didn’t seem that technical apart from some fast descents and some steep climbs (up ski slopes!) but varied and fun with a good atmosphere. Not sure if it’s the same format now, but when I did it you could choose to continue on a longer distance or stop if you’ve had enough.. or if you’d blown up your rear shock like my friend did

There are a few other events that are slightly outside your criteria – not in the Alps or multi-day, like the Transmaurienne, Quebrantahuesos MTB, Lozerienne, Forestiere, or even the Roc d’Azur/Roc des Alpes.

Oh, or the Velo Vert VTT festival at Villard de Lans

Forgot I did the MB race on a rigid carbon fork with a loose headset. Terribly painful.

Generally, those races are long fire roads and double tracks long steep climbs and fast descents, sometimes steep and technical. I’ve been twice at the Salzkammergut and 3 times Sellaronda Hero. Beautiful labdscapes and plenty to do around. My recommendation is the MB race, near Chamonix. This is much more technical than the average european races, very well organiced, like Salzk, SH and Grand Raid and very cheap, like Salzk. I’m going to see if I can do this summer MB race abd Salkammegut

A fast commuter track bike for under £1000 look for Cinelli brand.

Check out All City for a sscx bike, around £700-£800

I started 2 years ago on 32 x 18 on 650b wheels. Late last year I changed for 30×18, felt I can climb much bewtter and had overall better results.

Last change was introduced for one of the stages races I participated for the amount of climb on technical trail. See 54 km and 2100 metres climbing. I used for this 32×20 and I think is the best for me.

In my home town I used for a 2 hours race 32×16

My advice is to start on 32×18 and see how well can you clear those climbs. Learn to spin faster is very good, too.

Kings Lynn MTB club have taken on the thetford winter series. First one is in October.

They’ve put on a few good events already so I’m looking forward to see what they do with the series.

    Thanks. I’ll have a look.

Just found out about this event.
It looks like race starts on Saturday morning but I can’t find the schedule. I work Saturdays until 1pm…looks like I’m going to miss it. Bad, very bad news.

I used a hair dryer to do the same on a titanium seat post and frame.

Hi, I did it last year and I’m back this year. Rode the first bit to F. Augustus last week and took me nearly 1 hour more. I might not be on time for pizza at F. Augustus but see what happens with the racing chip on.
Good luck to everyone. It’s been very dry last days.
Huw, nice to meet you there in Tyndrum. Good luck for your carte-pro in France.

Jason English and Cory Wallace going together after more than 16 hours. Who sprints faster?

Great course with near 100%100 singletrack. Those sharp climbs hurt after few hours.
Started my 7th lap after 3h 55 minutes, finishing 6th vets and second ss tied in the overall ss sub category with the first today. Trophy decided by best result today so well done David Smith. He beat me in 2 of the rounds.
For me I had arm and shoulder cramps for the last 3 laps. Despite the 2 colds in the last 4 weeks I felt much better than expected but not enough for the win. Swapped Ikons fir Beavers and it was the right choice.
Forgot my spd shoes but glad I had old ones on the roof box.

Well done Gorrick team, you’ve done a fantastic job.

For me tomorrow it’s also a less than 100%100 racing due to 2 colds/flu things in the last month. I’ll listen to my body and I’ll adjust the pace accordingly.
    If I wasn’t defending points I wouldn’t race.

Treat it as a short ride and after 2 hours decide whether to carry on.

ITT for me on Sunday unless a miracle – Saturday off- happens. Never ridden there and route looks promising. See how far I can push on ss.

Meh! Missed a chance to race in grim conditions and opt to podium or near position. Ok, I’m sure organizers took the right decision for majority + avoiding too much damage to venue.

Registered too. As usual, 4h vets on single speed. Weather looks bad

Hey DrP, yes that was me.
Were you stopped at the top of a climb with cramp problems?
Your first lap times are super fast compared to the last ones.

Good course! Heard it’d be flat but as the time passed by seemed hillier and hillier. Missed the start because I forgot to put the number on the bars, ouch!!
Lap 5th stopped twice to tighten saddle and lost 3 minutes or so. Overall 7th 4h vets and 1st on ss. Yup!!

Also another guy on ss missed the start and passed me very quickly. He stopped to put air on rear tyre and easily passed me again but he didn’t finish?? Intrigued.

4h veterans on ss for me.
Didn’t bother changing tyres as per Yak’s theory xddd so Ikon 2.2 front and rear. If I rode Checkendon on this combo I can ride Frith Hill too

Really hard first laps with low thread tyres slow cornering and some crashes. Course improved towards the end. I don’t knw what happened with me. Fastestlap by a minute was the last!
No podiums for fat bikes and ss? I know we are just a few…

I’m racing in the 4 hour ss category. Bordon was a bit far but now Checkendon? Noone told me of the change of venue. If I don’t find this thread I might have got to Bordon me and my mate.
Full gas for me!! (cause everyone seems to be sick or untrained :p)

    Edit:
More traffic on this one I guess.I started very early on a mtb this time.

And well done Gorrick for banning the cheater for 5 years.

Looking at last year TORQ results I can see more than one person doing very quick laps towards the end. Odd

What a great event! The course was excellent, 90% singletrack?, despite the lack of climbing. Really a single speed friendly course. Only th(ng I felt was not very technical.
Everyone was very friendly when overtaking or being overtaken. I had zero problems on this matter. No rain fortunately.
As I didn’t know my position after 7pm or so, I was pushing like an animal towards the end to catch a guy on ss from Banjo cycles who had similar pace. I finished destroyed.
My fitness was excellent but the lack of ss riding lately made it even more phisycally demanding.

Yak, I think you were next to me, right? I was aso next to Banjo cycles. Nice to meet you!

Steve Day is unbeatable on ss at the moment. Very well done. I’ll keep coming to gorrick races.

This event could become much bigger.

What is the pricing for that hub here in the UK? Is there a distribution here as well? Or did you get it directly from Onyx?

I explained the wheel builder what I wanted and he’s doing all the job.
You can contact them by email. Somewhere in dropbox there’s a file with a list of prices in us $.

I can find it later. Similar price to I9, CK, etc…
