i was in the TA for about 5 years and enjoyed it, met loads of new friends, new skills, done new things, adventure training, driving HGV’s, got fitter, drank some beer, got paid a small wage when I was on duty and if you qualified, a tax free bounty. My employer (civil service) was very understanding and allowed me what ever leave I required…I also got paid special leave from my employer. I was put on stand by for a deployment but it never come off. There were plenty of oppoortunities to volunteer to go away. Back then (only 7 yrs ago) there wasn’t much of a chance to be compulsary deployed, but now, as someone above says you will do at some point so you need to bear this in mind. If you get compulsary deployed your employer needs to keep your job open under the Reserve Forces Act where as if you volunteer that is not the case. If you get compulsary deployed i think they should match your civi salary. Check that though.

But I think due to the expanding nature of the reserve forces, the time you are required will be more than 1 weekend per month and 1 drill night per week, plus 2 week annual camp. That said, its great fun, and i’d recommend it. My job commitments got in the way, so I had to leave, but now i do think of returning.

    Good luck!

Bit pricey but they’re very good and enough space for a smart phone (currently galaxy s3 , previous iPhone) and a car key. I use mine when running or out on bike. They’re very small and compact and not like a big bulky bumbag.

    Spi belt http://www.wiggle.com/?s=Spi%20belt

Edit – and you can get a waterproof one

thanks for the replies so far folks. I’d not rely on the compass either, not too fussed about that its the altimeter / barometer i want as well as all the functions for running and training and being out in the hills. Seems like it’s a tool that will fit my requirements.

thekingisdead: ring the appropriate financial institution and ask them. They should give you the details of your accounts etc.

Dolan wont let you spend over the £1k limit (well they wouldn’t let me!) so you may struggle. I rang them and they refused to let me add money to the £1k limit. of course if you’re employer has the credit license thingy to have more value on the CTW voucher then you’ll be fine. In the end I got my bike from PedalOn ; a Cannondale Super Six for £1200. I just paid the £200 difference myself. Anyway, cant help on the inns and outs of your 2 choices but just a word of caution re Dolan.

This guide and auto-fill letter template on Which? website seems to be quite good and has all the appropriate details for the particular financial institutions. I’ve used this to send some away recently but still waiting to hear. Worth a go! My brother got £6k back.

Hello hope you got there safe and enjoy my home city! Plenty to do there which some of the other folks have suggested and can second the free Museums, the Gormley Statues and for shopping and food you have Liverpool One and the other main shopping area too which backs onto Liverpool One. As you are staying on Pier Head (Thistle, Crown Plaza or Mal) then for the evening you’re not far to walk into town for food and drink. Not sure if you’re a Beatles fan (i’m not!) but there’s Matthew St and plenty of places there. Liverpool One has some restaurants too. You can take a walk from the Pier Head and turn left up the river which is a nice walk up to the Albert Dock and the Echo Arena (which is nothing special but walk is pleasant). If you want to drive up to Formby & Southport there are various beaches too. Hope this helps, have a good time!

I’ve just bought an Alpkit Gamma but will use it for climbing / camping / night running. They get good reviews for this sort of stuff. Not used it yet but it’s got to be better than my Petzl Zipka! 😥

Deadldarcy; glad you enjoyed the major and the various water features! ( I work for bmf on their events) I did think it was a bit harsh putting ice cubes into the stench trench ….as if it wasn’t cold enough!

Yes thats what I thought, I’m mainly on local trails, the odd trail centre and the like. 150mm is a lot and I just got rid of my SC Heckler, that was one of the reasons why, it was a big heavy bike and didnt reallty need all of the travel. The XC will suit the riding i do now, suppose I thought I was getting a bargain with the AM, but suppose I should be realistic and go for the XC machine! Cheers.
