I used to lead rides from the shop but we started getting 25+

and it was like herding cats as you couldnt reliably use the small singletrack anymore as people got split up, took wrong lines etc.

Also where you got to technical stuff a lot of riders believe they are better than they are, I took a few to the top of a disused quarry and pointed out three line options, I told them that see how they feel about the lines and pick one they feel confident about, as a guide I took the middle one, well the egos took hold and the newbies took the steep line only ending up in a finger being snapped off in a crash.

Also I have stopped riding with a few groups now as they take too many on sensitive areas, I was told to **** off from a group as I said taking more than a dozen riders over Ilkler moor will only draw attention to the problems we face in keeping access open.

Now I go solo or a couple of friends.

Dont want to get in to all the politics moaning etc that goes with a large group.

I saw a couple of Typhoons over Skipton tonight too, also we had some of the Wiggins team in the shop for some repairs and banter.

    Nice cars

whats the influence of the west on the countries the migrants are coming from.
    the majority are not libyans.

Maybe start by writing off the ludicrous IMF debts etc.

Then start looking at helping with infratructure projects instead of sending endless charity, lets help these countries to help themselves.
stop all the European farming protection and help the farmers to get a decent return for their products.

But nothing will happen because the EU is an incompetent waste of time and has never done anything to help anyone.

he is the most winningest of riders and he is a personality who really makes an effort for the fans, not only that he is a racer, a real racer who pushes harder and has upset riders in the past with how he has made do or die moves to win a race.
just watching him is exciting as you know you will see a good race.

but in Argentina at the weekend you saw how great a tactician he is and then a ruthless competitor

watc him against lorenzo, marquez, and at Daytona to see how hard he pushes and he has been doing it for 18 years or more.

    love the doctor.

Can the UK cope with say 10,000 or even 5,000

We havent taken many from Syria.

I have no faith in our politicians, or civil service, so lets say we agreed to take 2,000.

    how are these handled?
    would we build a camp?
    use hotels?
social housing? (is there any spare?)

I am doubtful we could organise a lot of drinking in a place that makes alcoholic drinks, so anyone know how it might work

I think we will house and feed some chewkw, but I dont feel the general public mood is very welcoming.
    sympathetic yes.

Problem is what is the long term position for migration, and can the middle east/africa be stabilised?

I am fearful of a new religious war.

I desperately wanted a Transition Patrol, but because I can’t get one (I’m a dealer BTW) I got the Scout.

And I am really glad I did.
I would probably still want the Patrol too, but the Scout does everything I need from it, and realy frikin well.

Currently using it on all the DH runs in the local woods.

Another useful tip is to build jumps.

I have just completed a new one in the woods and been practicing on it. Seems to work a treat. Nice shape and easy to relax and get it wrong as it has a good landing ramp.

I can build it up as I improve

I am really pleased with myself after tonights ride, i havent been jumping much recently, but on a nice sized double in Esholt, I cleaned it really well, front wheel down first, nice and smooth :)

or alternatively the workshop is where people trust you to fix their bikes, and a good workshop will be busy all year round, this regular work helps the shops cash flow as it is not tying money up in stock.

quite a difficult time for the shops, the coffee shop bike shops seem to attract high end customers, who are still spending a lot of money. the low end of the market are getting a lot of competition, from halfords, decathlon, go outdoors, etc.
the middle ground are getting the most competition, and are struggling unless there is more to the shop than its products, (workshop has to be the heart of the shop)

Horses wreck Thackley woods, but the paths which are footpaths dont get barriers put up, as there are lots of stables in the area that use the woods to connect, if it were motorbikes then I would expect the REME building barriers to stop them

But the track is fine if its now usable by everyone, its a flat track after all.

Best bet would be to do the Esholt, Calverley stuff followed by Bingley, Baildon, the rest of leeds has some good stuff like Meanwood, but its not as good. I tend to go out Saturday morning for a few hours. If you are in Leeds centre, you could get the train to Guiseley.

You make very sensible points rickmeister.
We got so much stick from the dog walkers for building jumps in the local woods.
Until the forestry came in cut down all the trees smashed the walls down destroyed the tracks and left the paths covered in left over branches.
Now they have no argument and no woods.
But we have built the jumps even bigger than before :)

To avoid conflict we ride with some farmers and anyone stops us then “we are checking the lanes and the livestock.”

No difference in the bikes or how we ride.

But no one minds access for farmers and pheasant shooters that’s ok.
But that is because the land in the UK is the playground of the landed gentry. We are just grateful to walk on it when they allow. No difference between working quads and recreation quads etc they cause the same damage.
Yet a farmer/gamekeeper can tear it up wherever they like on or off a track.
If you look at most of the scars on the moors they are from farm vehicles.

why do you say that Rorschach.

I used to kick box for a long time when I was younger and I remember ko’ing an opponent when doubling up a roundhouse to the head.
    it was a great move.

what’s up with that, it sport, and what it’s all about.

a KO from a roundhouse to the head.

    just feels sweet.

    Sancho

kind of what you would expect.

vehicles need access to the country as its not a picutre box its a working land.

And there is negligible difference between working vehicles and recreational, only probelm is the entrenched positions people have, as they want the landscape to be perfect for their use of it.

and that is where ramblers and land owners hold the power.
we are just mugs being allowed at their grace to use the land.

Deviant, you can drive your Land Rover 4×4 through a SSI, as long as youre the land owner or someone employed by the land owner in fact its ok to quarry, mine, and do what you like as long as youre the land owner, and as all farmers are slim and have slim children its ok for these slim athletes to ride on a track in a 4×4 but fat families from the city are not as they destroy the place.

We have hardcore tracks on ilkley moor that you can drive a 4×4 across as long as youre shooting birds, but you cant ride a bicycle on them as they scare the birds and its an SSI, the country access debate is a mess with self interets everywhere,
I also laugh at the suggestion that motorbikes are tearing about the place, yes they do, but these are illegal, and always have been so the last change in the law didnt stop them, but that’s because the police arent doing anything about them. They do enjoy taking their BMW x5 up a track and waiting all day to stop half a dozen legal riders and then do their best to get them for something, typically a small number plate or a light out. But the police are there as a private police for the wealthy landowners who dont want anyone up there other than paying customers.

    joke all round.

the argument against off roading is just hypocritical nonsense, they are arguing that you cant use these tracks for pleasure but you can if you live there and work on the land.

pure a holes all of them.

the banning wont stop people using the lanes, just make sure that when you ride them you dont stop and hang about, keep your number plate muddy and fek off anyone who gives you any grief.

I have a scout and its as capable as my spicy team on the descents, yet is more sprightly uphill and more nimble in the local woods. i just leave the damping open and struggling to fault it
