My 8yo daughter put many of us / you to shame this morning. She had tears in her eyes when she got up ‘because the Olympics is starting today and I’m going to see it, and I’m really excited and all my friends are excited, and lots of other people from all over the world are excited too, but it will be over in no time at all and then I’ll miss it’ For the next 2 weeks, forget about the corporate whoring and the water bottles and the cost and the politics, and look at it through an eight year old’s eyes. It starts tonight, in my town, I can’t wait any longer and I’m going to enjoy every last possible second of it that i can.

oh that’s really sweet. Is her name Pollyanna? Is yours?

The whippet is, I believe, pound for pound the fastest animal on the planet.

How does the pound for pound bit come into this? are you dividing top speed by weight to calculate a value?

What percentage of the overall cost is actually covered by the corporate sponsors?

I wonder do Olympic haters train for any sports ?

Any sport at any level… be it an XC race/enduro/DH or maybe a triathlon/running race. Possibly you’ve started pre-season football training. You may be trying to win or just complete it doesn’t matter … but you have to be actively training for your sport to compete.

But somehow I don’t think the haters are … are they? … Or are just sitting around on fat behinds eating crisps and spouting rubbish.

    why would that matter?

Sam, if someone’s forcing drink and weed into you in order to have their way with your back passage tell us now. I’m sure someone here will be able to point you in the right direction for help.

I’m not falling for that again. I originally posted about the smoking and the drink, then I thought someone was pointing me in the right direction, it turned out they were just turning me around.

if you have to “try” to enjoy something, it’s generally not worth the bother

Oh, so what about smoking and drinking and taking it up the wrong un then?

I’m very excited. It may be corporately corpulent, but it provides all of us, despite or own ethnic origins to get behind our team. I know it is a bit Norman Tebbit Cricket test. But we should all be supporting our home nation in this. So Come on Northern Ireland!! I hereby challenge you GBers to a contest! let’s see who gets the most medals!

Scientific theory is supported by facts, science is the organisation of ideas into verifiable constructs. Science and scientific theory are not interchangeable

Well, the NAS definition is certainly fine, but that’s not what you said is it. If it was, i wouldn’t have called it pap.

Science is supported by provable facts and workable theories (NB in science a theory does not mean a wild notion, to be counted as a theory in science means passing lots of peer reviewed tests with flying colours).

Where did you get this pap from?

    Religion, unfortunately, isn’t.

but that is just wrong most religions have undergone huge changes in their lifetimes

    SamCooke

Religion either does not change (fundamentalism) and consequently looks stupid, and often offensively out of kilter with modern thinking, or, sort of stutters along as scientific developments become so blindingly obvious and mainstream only the truly dull fail to embrace them.

Religions change in much more fundamental ways than just to accommodate scientific thought.

Both scientific and religious beliefs should be ‘subject to change’

To dissect yet another frog, it is about the hypocrisy of mocking one set of beliefs as crazy, whilst believing some equally crazy sounding stuff yourself.

It doesn’t hang on some odd philosophical theology debate about whether it is right to call something “bad” because it turned out to be “bad” even though it wasn’t “bad” at the time.

But it parodies christian beliefs in every other statement in that phrase, so it is a little incongruous to have one ‘made up’ one isn’t it?

rather intelligent friend of mine once said that religion was for the weak and ignorant.

surely you just mean relatively intelligent

It’s the Fall of Man, the reason we were cast out of paradise, the source of the Catholic concept of original sin. And most Christians think it’s “just one of those things?”

yes, same as the crucifixion of Christ. Neither good or bad.
