Just look at that Specialized… 12K and the saddle isn’t even level, someone’s forgotten to cut the steerer and it’s only got 404s 😆

I’m not sure what’s going on in here, people seem to just be listing good movies 😀

Blade, Starship Troopers, Tremors, Predator – these are all genuinely good films!!

If you want bad-good – I watched “Pain & Gain” last weekend. **** genius… Marky Mark and The Rock, with Michael Bay directing. Absolutely brilliant.

Hmmm, interesting! First thing I’d do is try to get some spares from Ribble, you’d hope they’d have that sort of thing available.

If Ribble can’t supply spares, the nearest thing I’ve seen is the Gore Ride-on cable system (this replaced the SRAM kits last year I think). Something like this.

They’re not quite the same as the Ribble guides (no stops to stop the straw sliding into the frame), but the straws fit snugly onto the ferrule noses so shouldn’t go wandering into the frame.

The SRAM pit stop kits come with that sort of stuff, no idea if you can buy it separately though.

Question is, why do you need cable guide straws for internal routing? It shouldn’t be rubbing on the frame – there should either be stops at both ends with a clean run of cable between, or a full-length outer run down into the frame… at least that’s the case on the two roadbikes I’ve had with internal routing. What frame are you trying to set up?

Jamie @ Wideopenmag has one to test at the moment – it was out at UK Bike Park last weekend. They’ll probably have a review in the next issue.

If “running out of steam” means “running out of breath”, you are almost certainly not breathing out fast enough.

    Read this: http://www.swimsmooth.com/exhalation_beg.html

Then go and do some sink downs to get an idea of how much you should be exhaling, then try that whilst getting your crawl on. AND then come back and let us know how it went 🙂

I was a rather poor swimmer; this year I completed an iron-distance open water swim. It’s all about the breathing!

The two rivnuts in the picture are for a short-mount Di2 battery, like this:

I know this as I have a Dura Ace groupset with short mount for sale 😀

Slightly over-budget, but in the recommend-what-you-use vein the Canon S90/95/100 are all lovely. Full manual settings as well if you fancy finding out what on earth an F stop is 🙂

I’m off there this weekend, looking forward to a good uplift session 🙂

    Two questions:
    – DH or 4X bike?
    – is Trail X any good? I can’t find any pictures or videos online…

Ah – so that’s what all the flouro-vested police folk were doing. Saw a load out this morning at the junction of Holloway Road and Seven Sisters Road. TBH I think that’s one of the safer junctions – it’s busy, true, but the road is wide with good sightlines and the traffic signals are well spaced out. Only nasty bit IMO is heading westbound down to Camden, with a filter lane on the left just after the lights.

Still – if it helps educate people (drivers OR cyclists!) then hopefully that will help reduce casualties in the capital.

Have requested a crew invite – playing on 360 fairly regularly, up for most missions and stuff when I’m not trying to get a tank into my garage 😀

FTR: definitely worth maxing out engine AND turbo on your car. The ‘acceleration’ bar in Los Santos Customs only reflects the range for your current car. If you compare stats in the race lobby, you get the full range for that ‘class’ of car – and you can definitely spot the extra accel / top speed that the upgrades buy.

Thanks for the feedback so far!

scotroutes – which provider are you with? They actually sound reasonable and able to handle the idea that variable energy usage doesn’t directly map onto a fixed monthly payment (GASP)

That in-game stunt montage is excellent. If you haven’t tried backflipping a motorbike, you definitely should!

Drac: bad sports mode gets progressively longer the more often you’re sent there. If you want to avoid bad sports mode, do some missions or races in between blowing up other players cars – that helps reset you to “good” status 😀

DT swiss does fit normal QR dropouts, but you’ll need to swap out the hub axle (as all 10mm bolt-thrus are 10mm in diameter along their whole length).

For a CK hub you’ll need the 135×10 bolt-thru axle, £70 from Bromley Bikes (http://www.bromleybike.co.uk/shop/components-spares/chris-king-service-centre/chris-king-hub-spares/chris-king-heavy-duty-axle-1047971.html).

Exposure Trace looks ok – but how’s the side visibility??

Every other light that’s been mentioned so far looks like a spot pattern – fine – but with no side visibility for the beam, so not great for urban riding where there’s potential for cars to pull out into the side of you. Is there anything out there that addresses that problem in a front light?

What you all are are a bunch of handwringing apologists. Either that or ‘it’ll pay for itself come resale time’.

Hora, that’s exactly what you do! Buy a frame then apparently “sell it for the same as I bought it for, it hasn’t cost me anything” a year six months two weeks later

+1 for Zoggs predators and Speedo jammers – both great bits of kit.

The thing to remember about goggles is that – like bike helmets – some just won’t fit certain head/face shapes. Takes a while to find a good pair, but definitely worth the effort/expense!

Jesus, that looks terrible. Could be some interesting stuff about “illusion of free will”, but the original was totally different in tone and should have been left alone.

HOWEVER, it gives me the opportunity to post the best youtube video ever.

I was in the same position last year – ended up just buying a handset and getting onto a 1 month rolling contract.

High up front cost but now my monthly bills are comically small, and I’m free to chop and change onto new deals whenever. Definitely not up for 18-24 month minimum contract length, it’s a massive pain compared to how things used to be :rosetinted:

Ah – fair dos! In terms of what to wear under it… for an Oly, I’d go for a two-piece tri suit so you can stop for a toilet break if necessary. If your bladder is strong, go for a one-piece and hope you don’t need to pee during the run or bike.

The problem with an Oly (and indeed a sprint) is that you won’t be able to get changed – there’s usually a “no public toplessness / nudity” rule in place, and organisers often won’t bother with a tent, so you’re stuck wearing one set of kit through the whole thing.

If you don’t have tri kit and don’t want to spend, then I’d suggest lycra running shorts and probably a cycling jersey. Road bike is only 40k so just over an hour, shouldn’t be too much chafage going on, and the jersey will be useful with pockets and such for gels. As darcy says, bib shorts are great for the bike but will probably have too much padding for running – and the thicker padding will also retain a lot of water from the swim (more chafage!)

I suppose a better question would be – what kit do you have now that you’re comfy running or cycling in?

I’d say start with a Sprint and see if you enjoy it – no point buying a wetsuit for a single Oly distance…

I started doing Sprints two years ago, done one Olympic (which was good fun) and have an Ironman coming up in 5 weeks 🙂

I would suggest not bothering with the adaptors – they clearly don’t stay in place properly. Why not just get a press fit BB to fit your cranks? Something like this:

gaz552 – I was going to raise this earlier, but only just got round to it. I don’t think you can use Cambridge as a reasonable example of “cyclists in a city”. Cambridge (and to a lesser extent Oxford) is almost a pure University town, and (as you rightly point out) the majority of cyclists aren’t responsible types, but students racing to and from lectures.

The standard of cycling in Cambridge is *appalling* – worse than anywhere else I’ve ever cycled. I do however think it’s a one-off – most other places the cyclists are better behaved, or at least not quite so congregated onto a very small number of streets at very specific times of day.

I use Conti innertubes and have had the valve-unscrewing problem with a screw-on-hose pump. What tubes don’t have this problem?

Note that I do actually need to be able to get the valve core out so I can get valve extenders on there…

If you need padding you could always just get a cheap-ish pair of tri shorts and wear a cycling jersey over the top.

I’d say the main thing is not to do anything new – if you currently bike or run wearing socks, then take a little extra time in transition and put some socks on. Make sure you go for a bike and run in the kit you’re planning to race in (e.g. padded-ish shorts, budgie smugglers, whatever) to make sure there’s no unforeseen chafing… 😯

This is coming from someone who adjusted their saddle nose up about 5mm before my ride on Monday… and now has the worst saddle sores I’ve ever experienced. This morning’s run was not as pleasant as normal 🙁

^^^ Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched… I’d wait until you get your next payslip before celebrating that you’re not paying off student loan any more.

I tried to switch to Direct Debit for my SLC loan two months ago. They completely failed to manage that, so now I have to pay off the full amount and pray that they somehow manage to stop collecting through HMRC before my next pay slip arrives. I look forward to calling them on a day-by-day basis to check progress 👿

Uzzi VPX – felt OK at first but was just too short and steep. Probably great for hucking off ladder drops, but I really didn’t get on with it. Replaced it with a longer, lower, slacker Socom and much happier!

Sounds like a good day was had by all – gutted I missed out on a place. Maybe next year!

brakes – I did a reasonable 100 miler through Hertford on Saturday – building in 2 x 36 mile loops (between Hertford and Clavering) plus a ride up the A10(ish) from London to Stanstead Abbotts. Can send you the Garmin link if it’s any use? 🙂
