the majority of my commute is on a sustrans path, so dog walkers. Inconsiderate dog walkers with their poorly trained shit machines gambolling about the whole trail as I bear down on them at 20mph+. Would it be too much to ask for them to call the dog to heel? Or even keep them on lead until they get to a field?
I used to let it wind me up, these days I just reward sensible, considerate dog walkers with a smile or a cheery “morning!”
I quite like it in comparison to some of the hydroforming fests, filing cabinets and carbon fibre amorphous blobs we see these days. Now if only it was a 26, or dare I say 650b..
In a camelbak mule nv-
Main compartment- socks, boxers, work shirt, deo, moisturiser!
Front pocket- levers, puncture repair kit, aws-10, spare tube, mini-pump.
Work trews and towel once a week in main compartment too.
Works components alternating profile ring works fine with 9spd, I use one with a Paul chainkeeper up top and a home-made bionicon-a-like underneath, works pretty well but I’ve not really given it a thorough testing yet…
I’ve had the misfortune of working on tills for a large supermarket chain and have actually had a customer ask me to pack for her while she checked her twitter. I asked her if she was winding me up, fired her items at her and bid her farewell. You wouldn’t believe some of the dick heads you meet in retail.
By “ratios are different” Northwind means the actuation ratio, i.e. the amount of cable pulled by the shifter per shift if you will. As I understand it current shimano MTB mechs and shifters pull more cable than their road stuff in an effort to give lighter shifting.
Currently running an old 9spd short cage dura-ace rear mech on a slx 11-28 cassette with an xtr shifter, in a 1×9 set up. The mech’s rated at 27t top capacity cassette wise but with a short chain it clears a 28 easily. Shifts are crisp and it weighs less than any of the other short cage options that were available at the time and it’s nice and small. The only negative is 36-28 as a lowest gear can get a bit demanding on an all-dayer.
Its got plenty of battle scars on it too so i wouldnt say durability is an issue either.
If you dont mind a narrow window of gear ratios id say go for it.
On the local sustrans bike motorway,
dog walker- “you should have a bell! Its against the law to not have a bell!”
me- “actually, while it is illegal to sell a new bike without a bell there isn’t any legal requirements for a bike to have a bell, so make sure you know what you’re talking about before you go round lecturing people”
I’m sure he fully appreciated me stopping to correct him on this….
I got some zees in 165 from tweeks the week before last for £80 if that’s not out of his price range?
The 36t ring may be a bit large for his needs though!
Had good longevity using Connex 9sg chain, brass coated links stave off the corrosion nicely, it’ll still rust if its not looked after but it didn’t snap from months of neglect like the two SRAM ones that preceded it.
Currently using a Connex 9sb which has a highly wear resistant anti corrosion coating (uses glass flakes in a two part epoxy as far as I can fathom) but its only been on two weeks so its to early for me to fully endorse it, it is BLACK though!
Good cleaning and lubing is essential though, I like finish line ceramic stuff..
9 tooth was never gonna last, they can get away with it on microdrive bmx setups because bmxs dont actually get ridden very far. Even 10 tooth might be a bit ambitious.
Did I read all or some of the cogs at least will be aluminium?
These factors make me a bit dubious… Other than that I wish they’d hurry up and release it.
They do look quite nice, geometry wise. Shame the execution is a little agricultural, hate the gussets, they have more than a hint of 90’s planet x about them, now if it was fillet brazed in 853 with prettier or even no gussets, then I’d be creaming my knickers…
Oh and it is made in a shed.
Oh the old offset bush argument again! Surely to slacken the head angle the holes would have to be “pointing away from the shock” effectively shortening the eye to eye length, achieving the same as compressing the shock 10ish mm? Don’t even get me started on “both pointing down”.
EDIT- I see, vertical shock, bit surely the top offset bush should be orientated upwards? Otherwise the eye to eye remains the same, the shock just sits lower?
Had the pappy van winkle’s family reserve in blind tiger in bury.. It was rather expensive but a lovely tipple.. I believe there may be a bottle behind the bar in malt in bury also. Can’t think of any further suggestions other than the above listed ones….
Gravel- stiffer, better pedalling, slightly less grippy but not worse for it… Much more waterproof and dry overnight… I’ve owned both and I’d go for the vans all day next time.
Glupton disabled people are disabled by society’s inability to accomadate their needs, be it wheelchair access, large print etc etc, not by whatever condition they have. Hence the term disabled being perfectly acceptable.
Our gaggia titanium broke through over use, replaced it with a jura, can’t remember the model but the little rascal’s never missed a beat.. I’d go jura.
Laced the wheels I’m using at the moment, en521s on hope pro II, 3 cross with dt spokes. I used the wheelpro spoke length calculator and like Ben Cooper used an old wheel to copy the pattern, then trued in the frame and fork using biros ziptied to the chainstays/lowers, slowly slowly catchy monkey, although I did cheat by getting my bike mechanic mate to check em for trueness/tension after….
A friend has just got a new Mrs, I text him one Saturday asking him if he was going down the pub, to which he replied- “nah mate, going seeing her son” to which I replied “WTF? SON? You’ve been seeing her a week and I thought she had no kids!”
Ten minutes later I got a text. “soon not son.” 😀
