Yep, I’ve run that set up on a couple of bikes … no problems to report, 2.2 rear, 2.4 front on a rigid SS and 2.2 F+R on a PA.

The top of the first climb should bring you out at the start of the climachX final descent… there is a newish bridleway been put in (for people wanting not the ride the climachX descent) at this point but I can’t tell you where to pick it up at the bottom as I’ve not ridden it.

Sustrans 8 will pretty much take you to the start of the climb… turn right off the A487 onto the B4404 and take the first left just after the bridge.

The cheer leaders will no doubt be at the top of the climb and a band half way up so she’ll have company. 😀

Usual to have marshals at the start of the forest/climb turning back those without a race number … might swing it with a trailer though.

Very common here in mid wales… I can ride all day even in the middle of what we call summer and not see a single person (unless I’m guiding of course). Some people find the thought of it a touch scarey, if you were to injure yourself theres a very good chance you wouldn’t be found for a few days 😆

Bolivia … then you can tell me all about it.

Much of it is footpath … you’ed have to make quite a few detours to ride it. It would possibly be easier to just make up your own route.

    Hiya,

The Dirty Girls is a very informal club for women … in fact we’ve just got back from a loop of the climachX. If you want to know anymore email stuart@forestfreeride.co.uk and I’ll do my best to explain everything.

    Cheers

    Stuart … who oddly isn’t a woman.

Conti’s … can’t remember if it’s speed kings or mountain kings that you can get in 29″ but I like ’em both. Some folk say they don’t have much grip but I’ve never had a problem.

Mansosoul thanks for the info, very helpful. I wouldn’t be going until next year. I thought a MTB steel hardtail would be best…something nice and simple with no bells and whistles.

I’m just at the mulling it over stage but the more I find out the more it makes me want to go … today 😀

It looks like I’d possibly be going solo, is that viable or stupid?

    Cheers

Freeride is just riding whatever you come across. If that includes drops, jumps, etc then all well and good but it doesn’t have to … the clues in the name really 😉

Some valid points but don’t underestimate the effect a couple of falls will have. A drop in confidence can make any bike feel crap.

It could be that you’ll have to change the bike now even if it isn’t at fault. A new bike or altered bike might just inspire your good lady.

No disrespect … but how’s her riding ? Have you considered the idea of a skills course ?…I see quite a few people with 2k plus bikes but because their confidence is low the bike actually becomes more of a burden than an asset ( would you learn to drive in a Ferrari ?)

Cheers folk, looks like a non starter then as I’ve only enough hair for dreads at the back these days 😕

Sorry, meant to say that from Rhayader onwards sensible wild campng wouldn’t be a problem or there’s the option of a couple of bothies.

Starting at Ludlow could be your best bet as it’s a pretty straight line from there to Aber’. You’ed have some fantastic riding from the mid point onwards … not too sure about the early stages though, but saying that there are some nice quiet hills between Ludlow and Knighton.

If it were me, I’d be looking at a route that went, Ludlow-Knighton-Rhayader (or Llangurig)-Devils Bridge-Aber.

If I remember right the curfew is in operation between May 1st and Sep 30th. No bikes on the mountain between 10am and 5pm.

James you’re so right. We run mountain bike navigation courses http://www.forestfreeride.co.uk and I’m often amazed how many people seem scared of maps.

It’s as though a map is something to get you lost … not to help you find your way

Crikey everyones different. It might just be riding a bike for you but for some it is their life. Granted it’s easy for anyone to but a Ripcurl T shirt and walk down the street all ‘surfy’…but many surfers do walk the walk just as many mountain bikers do.

I’ve got some, can’t fault ’em. Seem well made enough, nice and light but not to the point of concern.

Ridden them everyday off road for 2 months …no problems to report.

We haven’t had too much rain of late so the Mach’ 3 should be ok. If you like manmade trail centre type stuff you’ll possibly hate it though.

Theres better stuff in Dyfi forest (where the ClimachX is) just go exploring.

Brecon Beast was enjoyable enough last year…bit too much road work for me but everyone I was there with really enjoyed it, some more than Dyfi (which I can’t understand).

I’ve git some on the ss … can’t fault them. They certainly take a bit of chatter away compared to the steel forks they replaced. Customer service was fine, ordered and here 48 hours later.

Must be filling up fast. I said I wasn’t riding this year but have oddly just entered … Number 340, 5 minutes ago.
