If it doesn't have to be Cwm Carn and you don't mind going a little further north then http://www.forestfreeride.co.uk

I'd also say Vango, I got a Vango 'something or other' 2 man tunnel tent a few months ago. Seems very well designed and well made … seem to recall it was below £100.

What sort of sealskinz are you using?

I've always found the ones with merino in to stay nice and warm when wet.

    Right, I've just been out into the workshop and my *findings are;

Summer Season, 100mm Toras = 67 degree head angle

PA, 130mm Drop offs = 69.5 degree head angle

    NS Bitch, 170mm 66's = 65 degree head angle

The summer season and PA both ride really well up and down … you only want to be going down on the NS 😉

    *Static – no sag.

Now, I thought the whole point of the summer season frames was to allow you to run a shorter fork but still have the benefits of a slack head angle (as you would get on a 'normal' 456 with long forks).

Everyone seems to be talking about sticking big forks on 'em … that's what the 456 is for.

The On One website quotes the SS frame as having a head angle of 66.6 degrees with a 5" fork … no one wants to go slacker than that now … do they?

Earthed 3, if you look around I'm sure you'd get the Earthed box se (1-4) for under £25 … can't fault any of the films. More varied than you might think.

How about the stone filled galv' cages? I've seen them used to retain some pretty big areas and heights.

Don't know about the mudgaurd issues but I do a fair amount of 'touring' on a slot dropout inbred and it's proved very much up to the job. I can't imagine a std inbred being better or worse.

Not on a full sus, but I bent one quite badly on a hardtail. It wasn't carrying very much weight and it still bent. I wouldn't like to use one in the back of beyond unless I had a backup in place.

I'd consider some Carradice Super C Limpet front panniers. The fitting allows them to go on any forks regardless of mounts. They look like they might move around but once they're on they're superb … quickly removed too.

Depends where you are Larry but the Navigation Inn in Buxworth (about 12 miles from Buxton) was always good. I left the area 4 years ago so I've no idea about times, etc.

It's a very long story but he'd reported me to the police for *blackmail 😯 so I'd had a visit and been warned off.

*Not that I blackmailed anyone … I just asked him for a Dekerf frame in lue of my money

He never took cards so I never saw a penny.

The folks at Transition were really good but at the end of the day it wasn't their fault / problem. They did everything they could to get Jim (I think) Dekerf to bugger him off. I had a few calls from Mr Dekerf who decided he was going to stick by his importer … I like to think I did whatever I could to bring that relationship to a swift end.

The ****t in question managed to walk away from £140K+ worth of debt.

I'm over it now, can you tell? 😉

Just buy direct … there was a UK importer who was a proper ****t. Shame this site was hacked as you'd have found a very lengthy thread regarding said ****t from a few years ago.

It's a flat piece of metal, profiled to shape with some holes drilled in it. It'll be made in the same factory as lots of other flat bits of metal with holes in … I can't really see what there is to go wrong. If it turns out I'm incorrect and they aren't infact metal but cheese, send 'em back 😉

I'm slap bang in the centre of Wales (after leaving the Peak district a few years ago). It's a minimum 350m climb and 3k to get out of the forest in any direction … single speeding makes it fun 😉

I wasn't so bothered by the rain but the 40 foot tree that came down very, very nearby was a little off putting…the group I was instructing couldn't half run fast 😀

Like Stoner I use a Carradice super C saddlebag for overnight trips or those where I don't need camping gear. I'll either add a pair of Carradice super C limpet front panniers or just use an EBC trailer when I need to carry more. I find that I notice weight in the trailer less than I do with the bag / pannier set up.

Handling will be 'altered' with either set up but you soon get used to it … the trailer tends to cause understeer pushing you out of corners.

The kingisdead will be talking about Tegids bunkhouse in Mach' … ring the Holy Trail and they'll get you in touch.

The George Borrows Hotel just down the road from Nant is ok, nothing exotic but I'm sure they've secure a lock up.

Grumm, a *manual is a far more useful skill for general riding. It doesn't have to be massive, so long as the front wheel clears whatever you're faced with the rear will follow without too much fuss. I'm not saying a bunnyhop isn't a technique worth obtaining, it's just that in the great scheme it's not that important.

    * Not just yanking up on the bars hoping the front wheel will follow 😀
