Same way you deal with motorbike chain?

If it was just water I wouldn’t mind but the TPT near me is an absolute swamp in places except over the summer.

I don’t want every ride to end up with looking like I just done the Tough Mudder especially since I ride to work.

I must apologise for not being able to commute to work or ride to the supermarket over a gnarly mountain.

I dunno why these people don’t get a scrambler or ride a roller coaster if they want ‘fun’ without having to break a sweat.

I never knew that so many MTB’ers found pedaling a drag.

Too cool for mud guards? :D

Dare I start a thread about it, or will it cause a ruckus?

Yeah we have a forum for non-bike stuff. :D

Yeah one reason I want to do more MTB from now on. Where I live in Cheshire the roads are very busy and always get at least one idiot per ride.

If tights go over shorts then they should go over baggy shorts too?

I just ask for consistency :D

I wouldn’t over-think this. Any general purpose grease would do IMHO and maybe some marine grease for better lastability in wet weather. It’s just a pivot bearing which needs something a bit thicker then oil but is still low temp and fairly low pressures with intermittent movement.

Where it how you want. There is no ‘cool club’ dress code you know! :D

Bamboo is kind of notorious for being prone to rotting and does have a tendency to split as it dries out. It’s more likely this is why it split when subject to heat rather than internal air pressure.

Until the wife lent it against a radiator and cracked the top tube end to end!

I wonder how the bamboo was cured? Possibly not very well? I believe in Japan bamboo will be stored for up to 3 years to turn it into timber, or you can put in at oven for a short period which is more likely to lead to cracks.

    Wilier Jaroon at CRC £1400

Hydraulic brakes and mounts for mud guards etc. Not light but the steel frame is certainly attractive.

Out of interest what gearing is the OP using to reach nearly 50 mph?

    I went for the 29er.

I bought a Willier Jaroon specifically cos it could accommodate fixed mudguard and rack. It was discounted at CRC. I put on some 32c as well.

I need a large unfortunately but I’m seriously thinking about the 27.5 Orange Clockwork 137 at Rutland,

I don’t think the op has been back since the first post!

    Yeah I’ve been lurking.

I was thinking of the Chameleon but some people here are saying the spec is bad. The Orange looks a good deal but worry it’s too much travel for me and thinking about it I might prefer 29 wheels.

And are Cube a ‘good’ brand ?

Slow pootling old folk who jump out of their skin even if you ring a bell a mile away and then give you dirty looks, or deliberately block the path knowing you’re there, or joggers with headphones in who don’t seem to be having a good time and barely acknowledge your existence once they do notice you. Similar with phone zombies.

Yeah I’ve noticed that too. If I cycle along the TPT very early in the morning to work I see the odd regular dog walker who often says hello and is proactive about securing their dog. Old people jumping out of their skin I can kind of tolerate since well…they are old, and as you say during the day (and particularly at weekends) you get some really passive-aggressive **** stand two across on the hard-packed part of the trail and force you into the grass or mud.

Or cut the arms off and turn it into a Gillets.

Or slice it up into a few pieces and use them as rags?

Brambles can puncture a tyre so it’s not like they are MTB safe.

Why bother?  No pants, just shorts. Even at minus 2

Honestly if it was me I’d ban dogs. They put thousands of people in hospital per year cos of attacks and shit everywhere making people ill.

Why people keep dogs is a mystery to me.

If there was just a few around it would be different but near me it feels like there are more dogs than people.

I don’t normally unless it’s something like a very busy roundabout or junction that is too dangerous/fast/intimidating to cycle across.

Having said that when I occasionally ride into Liverpool there are some roads past the airport which are really busy and have a ‘pavement’ separated from the road by a verge. In some places this is a cycle path in others isn’t officially but I use it.

Not sure I’d want to mess around with toxic organic solvents.

Both a Finishline wet lube and some pro-road ceramic crap used by me this last year on the bike I take down the TPT. The result was a filthy drivetrain which seemed to excrete black gunk.

No exercise other than walking around from early 2012 to spring 2017. Had some problems I’d rather not discuss.

Defiantly feeling my age (40) doing running and cycling again and it’s very humbling to get on a bike with absolutely no fitness. I have some reasonable base fitness now even after 6 weeks away working where I didn’t have access to a bike. Hope to do some moderate group road rides next year and maybe some MTB. There was a point where I had resigned myself to never be able to ride again and I feel very lucky.

of course it’s possible, but ebikes are being marketed for the fat and lazy, this much we know!

Yeah but a battery makes you fitter using power of unicorn farts.

I’m running WTB exposure 32c on my commuter bike now which has to tackle some very muddy bridleway over winter. This is a mixed use tyre with a slick middle and a slightly knobbly outer. I was running some 35c Conti Cyclocross tyres but I wanted to have less mud thrown up.

Time will tell if they are ok or not. I don’t need to corner since the bridleway is straight but over some cobbles the 32c’s felt a bit skittish. Might try and reduce the pressure a bit.

That’s not true. If you know anything about proper training you’ll know that it’s important to have periodised training with different intensities at different times

Which you absolutely don’t need an e-bike for.

You’re argument is analogous to weight training with a spotter doing half the work for you, as if this helps because training at your one rep max all the time isn’t optimal! Just take half the weight off the bar instead!

I would concede that being able to keep up with your friends on a group ride is somewhat justifiable but also comes across as a thin and tenuous excuse. If you are using fast group rides for base training than maybe you are doing it wrong? And what happens when inevitably everyone is on an e-bike? Do you all take the batteries out?

How **** fit do you have to be to ride a gravel bike along canal paths anyway FFS?

That’s a bit uncalled for don’t you think? You don’t know anything about my injury or illness history, and anyway 30 miles a day commuting won’t make you slow! :)

And as I explained earlier, depending on how you use it can actually make you stronger than a non-Eeb

That’s a bit like saying that diet soft drinks can help you lose weight. Yeah they can if you don’t drink the full sugar soda! There is nothing about the diet soda that makes you lose weight. Similarly an e-bike can help you get fitter, if you ride it harder than a non-e-bike, in other words nothing about the e-bike per se is advantageous for helping fitness.

Prior to commuting on my ebike I could just about manage a 2 hour ride at the weekend on a non assisted bike with my level of fitness. But now I can do at least 4-5 hours unassisted because I’m much fitter.  👍

I’m confused how you couldn’t have achieved the same or more on a normal bike commuting though.
