Currently on an 11-36 cassette and 32t ring.

Simplicity of 1 by is good but it does annoy me when my mates with doubles aren’t working as hard to climb. On a big bike I would probably consider a compact double instead…but my point is I dont agree with:

‘1 x 10 is pretty useless in a proper mountain environment.’

1×10 can make life tough but pretty much anything is doable with the right amount of fitness and willingness to try harder.

Can anyone give a brief review of their experience with the mavic cross one wheels that come as stock.

    Any good?

I am looking at sourcing one from Europe with the exchange rate as it is.

Very close to pulling the trigger on a frame and building from there.

Arogers, does the XL feel fine? I am around the same size as you and am torn between the L/XL. Don’t suppose you are based in the North West?!

I read the MBR review today which was somewhat off putting. I am concerned about the wide chainstays. Are they really that bad?

Final point, what do people generally prefer dropper wise…Reverb or KS Lev. Getting my build list together and thinking the Lev as it seems the more reliable option.

I paid £200 for a replacement chainstay on a 2 year old camber in March. Took them 8 weeks to sort it as well. I tried to argue the price down but in the end just wanted my bike back so paid it.

I doubt they will budge. The warranty only covers front triangle for sure.

I also wrote a nice letter to head office and never got a reply…top service

All is not lost! I managed to get the stem bolt undone using a different allen key, the head wasn’t as damaged as I first thought. So I’ve gone through the process of adjusting my headset…its better than it was; i.e not lose but there’s some clear grinding when I turn the bars. I reckon the bearings either need re-greasing or more likely replacing.

Anyhow it’ll do for now, you never know the rain might stay away tonight as well

always seems the more you spend the more trouble you have and the more pissed off you get. always some creak or click or chatter to do my head in…

    That’s me in a nut shell! @jaffejoffer

I appreciate all the comments! I am pretty inept at looking after my own bike maintenance so a course of some sort is probably a great idea.

My lbs told me they would sort the wheels out after a few weeks so they’ll be fine all being well.

I’m not sure how the headset bolts rounded off, it’s not something I’ve adjusted myself from memory. Not recently anyway. I’m going to take a look at it this morning and see if I can get the bolt out. Then hopefully I will just need a replacement bolt as someone mentioned earlier.

But generally if I suspect a loose headset then I shouldn’t be riding it? The frustration comes from having these problems and just wanting to ride the thing with no issues. Had to get a replacement chainstay from specialized earlier this year, took them 2 months to get it to me! Also charged me £200 for the trouble. Lads I ride with think I’m a walking disaster haha.

    No probs.

My rear shocks always been very responsive be it on small stuff or big hits. As silly as it sounds trying to look down when you’re pedalling over some rough ground to see how much the shock is moving could be an idea if you think its not soaking stuff up very well. Just dont do it when you’re going too quick!

If you’ve adjusted the shock pressure but that’s not helping you could first make sure you have your sag set up correctly and then play with the rebound setting? Maybe try increasing it and see if that has an effect.

If all else fails a service could be in order. I had issues with my fork (Fox Float 120mm) being very unresponsive but cleared that up with a service recently which has completely changed the feel of the bike.

How long have you had the bike? It sounds like you’ve got it recently?

Could simply be due to gear cross over, probably recommended you avoid riding with those combinations. Just shift down/up on your front rings depending whats required. My road bike doesn’t enjoy it when I do what you have described.

Bad luck with the theft. Aside from that as a building surveying student I would not recommend fiddling with asbestos whatsoever, may be best to call someone qualified to do so if it is extensively damaged and fibres have been dislodged.

Though you are probably already aware of this! I hope!

Thanks for all the input, don’t know how we are going to fit everything in!

As an aside to this topic does anyone have any experience keeping multiple bikes locked up on a campsite. Would it be safest to leave them all in the boot of the car and covered with a blanket so they are not visible?

I use GoPro Cineform Studio and its pretty good. Have also tried Sony Vegas and Imovie, depends how much time you have on your hands.

    Shameless youtube advertising Youtube Edit

I made that in around half an hour or playing around with Cineform studios, I think theres a good GoPro tutorial vid on youtube to help you out with it.

Don’t over-think the bike or your riding. If you liked the 905 on testing just ride that and number 1 – enjoy it! Full suss isn’t everything, a mate of mine rides everything we do in the Peaks on his hardtail and loves it.

Be glad you are replacing them now. I left mine when they were knackered on my camber and its ended up costing me £250 for a new rear chainstay. Running it with worn bearings has worn away the threads the pivot bolt sits in and its not covered on warranty so I have to splash out…

Just need the involved shop and Specialized customer service to pull their finger out, its been a week and they still haven’t ordered me the replacement stay yet despite several phone calls!!

@Normal Man – My LBS gave me one to test out for a bit think its 70-80mm far better than the one that came on the bike. May go shorter not sure yet. How do you find the wider bars? I’m thinking of going to 780mm but not sure if that will be too much. May get a 740mm renthal bar

@devash Would you go for bigger bars or is 720mm alright?

    rwills2
    Free Member

@devash Its a large frame. The bars are 680mm according to the spec online, not sure on the stem – I’ve still got it in the garage so could measure it but never sure where to take the reading from! Its pretty long though much better with a shorter one!

Yours looks smart, is it a 2012? I got mine in Jan 2012 when they were on the cheap due to being the previous years model. Have you swapped out the bars and stem?

EDIT – Just googled the old stem on the picture, it was 105mm!

My 2011 Camber. Now 1×10 with new tyres and a shorter stem. Still need new wheels and a wider bar.

Out yesterday on the road bike for the first time in six weeks most people were friendly and said hello or gave the usual nod.

I did take offense to two that passed me though on the opposite side of the road, one commented on the fact I was wearing a lotto belisol team jersey from a few seasons ago. Then continued to say something about ‘if you wear team kit…’ within ear shot. Thought it was overly rude and the person in question just seemed a total bell**d. Other than that was a good day out.

Spotted both a Canyon Full Suss and and Norco long travel downhill bike in Stalybridge/Ashton Under Lyne, East of Manchester recently.

Just a heads up really in case anyones lost anything that sounds like them. Both times the rider didn’t fit the bike.

I have the exact same cleats and shoes as the first poster. The 2 bottom yellow plastic bits on both my cleats fell off after about 2 or 3 rides last summer and I’ve been using them since.

They still work absolutely fine no need to replace them.

I’m tempted to get the joystick from Rutland, £75 seems a bargain.

I could mount the Vision 1 on my helmet and buy another light for the bars but reviews seem to suggest the Hope is a bit heavy for helmet use.

Would the Joystick mounted on my helmet and Hope on the bars be good enough? I could return the Hope, main reason for buying it was the cost – £77 from Ribble Cycles with the battery pack and charger

Interesting topic…I converted recently to a 1×10 with 32 ring and 11-36 cassette.

Fitness will improve in time you just have to be patient with it though it can be frustrating when your mates are leaving you behind spinning along easily while you’re forced to push a much harder gear. I’ve had my doubts about the setup but the lack of maintenance and chain slap and the simplicity of the single ring have won me over for the time being.

+1 for standing on steep stuff, put the power down!

There next weekend on a riding trip with the lads, riding Llandegla Saturday Coed Y Brenin Sunday.

Not been in about 18 months, is it stupidly busy on weekends? Don’t want to get stuck behind people on the singletrack…

The guy posting the videos is obviously a complete idiot and/or novice. In the above video the Honda indicated and gave him plenty of time to back off a bit yet he insists on carrying on regardless screaming his lungs out.

In the first video the groups all over the place, no cohesion at all.

    Laughable
