Anybody own a Moots? Always been interested as to how they ride

I don’t own them personally, but my friend who I ride with does. He got them replaced under warranty after 2 months as play had developed in the bushings. They’re pretty felxy, and he doesn’t rate them over the fox forks they replaced. Never tried SIDs so can’t compare them I’m afraid. They’re very light, but possibly designed too light?

For anybody else in the future trying to find a headset standard I found this very useful:

I ran this for a few months before I completely went 10 speed. I did find a 10 speed chain ran slightly better as the 10 speed chainsets are designed for the externally narrower chains. As above 9 and 10 speed chainset have same internal width.

    Finding it a minefield!

One moment I think it’s an integrated headset the next I think it’s semi-integrated.

    Thanks for your help

    Thanks Paul,

Still not sure on the exact headset I need, it looks like the CRC one, but the cane creek headset finder came up with this:

    http://www.canecreek.com/component-headsets?browse=Complete&name=40&product=40.IS42%20Short%20Cover%20Carbon#40.IS42 Short Cover Carbon

    Are these the same standard?

Edit: embedding not working for some reason

that moots is the one of the lovliest bikes I have seen. ever.

I know, and look at the welding/finish on them:

    This:

or this, the welding on every moots frame I’ve seen has been immaculate:

But I’m actually on the look out for a 2nd hand 120mm travel frame, as that is all the budget allows.

I stuck the glow in the dark ring underneath the lens and reflector and found that helped a bit. Couldn’t get scotch tap to work that well

I’ve been looking at trek top fuels, fuel exs and scott sparks, mainly for the reason that there’s a lot of them about. Wouldn’t mind something a bit more interesting though. This caught me eye:

but don’t know much about them.

Commencal 4, another to add to the list, thanks wrecker

Cheers binners, looked at a few of the those, still haven’t made up my mind on the looks, need to see one in the flesh really.

I might have to pull mine out again Zokes and give it a whirl, probably didn’t help mine was leaking last time I used it. I do miss the little ritual of grinding the beans and setting it up to be fair.

    Mukka express looks nice

I hate to say it, but you’re doing it wrong then… Probably on too hot or for too long.

Have you tried the nespresso coffee? In my opinion it is better than a stove top, pressure is at 9 bar which is ideal for a good crema, and higher than a stove top (2-3 bar at a guess). The coffee is always fresh too. A packet of coffee is off in 10 days, grinding beans counters this but adds a bit more faff.

Stove top coffee is good and I made it like that for years, but with the nespresso machine you do get good consistent coffee quickly.

I’m starting to sound like a salesman so I’ll stop here, but the consistency of good cups of coffee is it’s main selling point.

Fork lowers and cranks are the only parts I will always use a torque wrench on. I’ve got a Thomson stem and I used to use the torque wrench but haven’t the last few times, just nip it up until it’s tight.

I’d recommend a Nespresso also. Fresh coffee with a good crema everytime. Spend more on coffee than I previously, but the coffee is much better than a stove top. Not as good as a proper espresso machine with some one who knows how to use it, but you’re looking at a grand for that. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve just purchased some refillable capsules, so you can use your own coffee if you like.

I got the xt version for cheap and I really like them, you can pootle down to the shops in trainers with them but I wouldn’t want to do any great distance without being clipped in. I noticed the bearings ease up over the first 100 miles and they now run very smooth. I’ve had the DX version, but I don’t think they provide any real benefit over the trail version. They are very tough but they are very heavy.

Can’t give you any feedback about the m530s but from what I’ve heard they’re very good for the price. I went for the trail type as they’ve got a slightly larger contact area and the cage provides a bit more mechanism protection.

Another vote for what cruzheckler said. Xtr set is very good if you can get a decent price on it. No point in running bare cable near the rear mech in my opinion.

I’ve gone from 9 speed m770 to 10 speed m770 and the shifting is noticeably better. I stuck on new cables and a new shadow plus mech so not a direct comparison, but from what I’ve read the 10 speed shifter mechanism is a different design to the 9 speed, so whatever shifter you go for the shifting will be better.

If you get the dt rws skewer make sure it looks likes this:

    http://www.dtswiss.com/Products/Components/RWS/RWS-thru-bolt.aspx

The others have plastic handles which in my experience last for 5 minutes. I’m using the superstar ones for now, as I didn’t get on with the plastic levers. The superstar ones are noticeably heavier (the dt swiss ones are very light) but they feel absolutely solid in the hand, they come with an OE QR lever which is why they’re much cheaper in comparison. To be honest I can’t tell much difference between the dt swiss ones and the superstar but maybe that’s because I only got to use the dt ones for a couple of rides before the plastic burred.

EDIT: Don’t buy this version from crc:

Another vote for vivaldi, lovely buttery variety, if you bake them then scoop out the flesh you get a fantastic mash or keep the skins on to mix it up. Doesn’t make the best roast potatoes though.

Maybe the Fat Duck is love/hate place then. I thought it was a level up from any another restaurant I’ve eaten in, the wine matching is brilliant as well.

You have to admire the skill though (spoiler to anyone who’s going):

Have you tried tumble drying it? I got a bargain north face jacket around this time of year a while ago, so keep an eye out at the major retailers in the January sales.

Agree with bruneep, if you shop around you can go 10 speed for less than that. Got xt with the fancy new xtr rear mech for £350 from rosebikes and using crc vouchers.

Edit: with the brakes that is £500

m530’s look good, think I’ll probably get some for when I build up a commuter

I’ve been using the xt trail pedals with no complaints for two months:

    http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/shimano-pedal-set-spd-pd-m785/aid:515825

They’re slightly lighter, and have better sealing than the above.

L’enclume is very nice. Fat Duck for me is easily the best meal I’ve eaten, everything is near perfect.
There are some great cheap restaurants around though, the best ones in my experience are the places which do a small number of things very well.

Kask k10 will fit you what ever your head size thanks to their double linked design. This is an expensive helmet (for me anyway), but it is so much more comfortable and more secure than any other I tried on.

Thoroughly recommend them, they do a cheaper version which doesn’t come with the synthetic leather strap.

I’m pretty sure that 10 speed shimano mtb and road are slightly different. If I remember correctly 9 speed mtb has the same cable pull as 10 speed road, so you won’t be able to use your dura-ace shifters.

Sram 10 speed is the same, but shimano 10 speed is different.

Managed to get a North Face summit series for that price a few years ago, and it’s fantastic. Very waterproof, but never get overly warm in it. Like a second skin to me, wear it all year round, if it does get warm I can always open the side vents up to cool down. Seems to be tough enough, but obviously don’t want to test it too much.

Have you torqued the cassette up correctly? Shimano cassettes require 40Nm, which I read as tight as you possibly can. First time I put on a cassette I thought it was on tight, but in a month it had worked itself loose.

As above make sure it’s not the freehub which is loose, if the knocking is coming from the freehub it could mean you need a replacement.
