Going to remove the steering wheel and click it round a spline,

You need to centre the rack / steering column as per my post above before relocating the wheel. Especially so if the car has a steering angle sensor – if the rack is off centre (because the TRE’s are incorrectly installed) then the BCM thinks the car is cornering when it’s actually going in a straight line.

Jack and support the front end. Centre the steering wheel and turn full lock left – note how many turns and degrees until the wheel hits the end of the rack. Do the same the other way full lock. From there you can figure out the centre point of the steering rack and then understand if the steering wheel is correct to the rack or not. Once you figure that out then you can start twiddling with TRE’s

Steering angle sensors are attached to the steering column and not the steering wheel.

Surely offer it to @rustynissanprairie for £500….?

Vag 2.7 – needing a turbo(s), erm……no thanks. eBay spares or repair but I don’t think it will do mega money as it’s a big engine out job to change turbos.

their wild space at 10-20 for a night to wild camp in.

I’ve just done a car camping tent tour of Skye / West Coast including a few campsites that were on the NC500 route.

The most expensive site was £19 but the rest were ~£12. As a result I didn’t have to shit in a lay-by and annoy the locals.

Getting darker in the mornings now when we set off at 6am so it’s difficult to pick litter if you can’t see it.

Couple of bags worth from the last few days to tidy up ‘my patch’ after being on holiday for two weeks.

MrsRNP uses Airalo, has the app – buys whatever data/duration she needs for France, ‘activates’ it here then when she lands it hooks up to French network and carries on as per normal.

Whether you like Clarkson/Hammond/May etc – there probably won’t be another TV program made again with the production scale of Top Gear / Grand Tour. As daft and unnecessary it was converting the cars to run on rails (and all the previous stunts/set ups/’comedy moments’) – there was a lot of engineering and no doubt red tape and planning going on behind the scenes that then brought the stunning shot of the Victoria Falls bridge and has done with many locations previously.

Yes its felt contrived, scripted and stale at times over the years – but as a piece of entertainment and escapism I’ve always thought it was great.

As good as some YouTube channels are they will never get the depth or scope of a big budget full production company and that is a shame and loss.

I didn’t celebrate when Thatcher died because I was to young to realise what she’d done.

But I’ll certainly have a drink and celebrate Trump’s death……and Pootin’s.

Look for stuff on eBay with methylene chloride / dichloromethane / MeCL2 – that’s the active ingredient that nitromors no longer has. It’s nasty stuff though so follow and MSDS to the letter.

I had a weeks holiday there when working in Ningbo. Plenty of usual touristy stuff around The Bund area, I found a nice infinity pool in one of the hotels (can’t remember which). But my overriding memory of the place was that I couldn’t find any peace or solitude anywhere – just masses of people everywhere

From Applecross we went to Gairloch and a larger campsite. It was actually really good – set in the dunes with pitches wherever you wanted. If you explored a bit and were okay driving on sand there were some really good Instagram worthy spots. Once again a beautiful beach and great weather.

From there cut across country to Inverness then down the A9 to Aviemore before heading for home as the weather broke.

What an amazing roadtrip!

Just over 1100 miles @25.3mpg. The rural west coast, Bealach Na Ba, and Skye single track roads really hurt the fuel economy due to constantly stop/starting.

Car worked faultlessly – I know it’s a big heavy unloved SUV but doing things like this is where they are in their element. It’s parked up again now.

2 issues

1. It needs cruise control. No idea why you wouldn’t option a car like this without it. Can be Porsche Classic retrofitted for £500 from main dealer but that’s what I paid for the car so need to figure another way of doing it!

2. Has some driveline vibration when it’s been parked overnight. Goes away once it’s done a few miles so I suspect the rear propshaft CV joint is dry/tired. It’s had a prop a few years ago but the cost would indicate it’s an eBay cheapo rather than genuine Porsche (£2200) or OEM (GKN £450). Will be sorted before the Christmas roadtrip we are starting to formulate.

A few more pics.

Check/change the alternator brushes – it seems to be a ‘LC thing’, I watch Uncle Pooley and TJ&Mac (Oz 4×4 channels) and they’ve all had recent LC alternator brush issues.

It’s a Nordick Ydun – it’s a car camping tent as it’s polycotton and heavy.

It’s in the PSA thread, OMM are selling them off cheap at £160

Blimey! That’s going to be carnage on the local roads – towed our caravan home mid-day on a Monday along the M62 to Simster Island then north to Rawtenstall a few weeks ago and the motorway was absolutely rammed. I know this is overnight but will still be a lot of traffic.

I’ve recently serviced the Brembo 6pot 17z (£450) calipers on my near 20 year old Porsche.

Aluminium and steel? Plenty of localised MAPP heat followed by Würth Rost Off. A few heat/cool cycles followed by a final heating to expand the aluminium (coefficient of expansion works in your favour with this one) and they came out okay.

New nipples, ceramic anti seize, and I apply a little waxoyl to the nipple/caliper interface.

Snapping a stud extractor? As mentioned above, EDM or possibly cobalt and a bollocking/piss taking for the apprentice.

@retrorick it’s exceeded my expectations – it was £500 remember (plus a bit of tinkering). Life in the old dog yet (car, Bert and me!)

My previous NC500 grumpiness has subsided! I’m at the Inn@Applecross, had something tasty to eat, got a pint of local lager whilst watching the sunset with a band playing in the background.

It’s like Scotland’s answer to Cafe Mambo Ibiza!

Back to civilization and a data connection!
I went from a great campsite at Roy Bridge (Bunroy Park) and a good dog friendly bar/restaurant (The Old Station at Speen Bridge) via the A82 / A87 Great Glen to Skye.

Stayed at Glenbrittle campsite for a few days, amazing place full of hardcore rock climbers and mountain people, beautiful beach and the Cuillin Ridge just behind. Great pizza! Had an early start before it got too hot and did the couple of hour hike up the Loch / tarn. Evening sat on the beach.

Had a little mooch about Skye then went north to Applecross and I’m on the campsite there currently.

I was originally thinking about doing the NC500 but I’d read the negative impact it was having on the locals. That case was made today. Skye has a lot of single track roads with passing places – it works with only a few snarl ups with unconfident drivers. I drove to Applecross up the Bealach na Bà pass and had Billy balls in his massive wheeled Ford Ranger trying to police everyone and people not knowing how to use single road passing spots. I got to Applecross and parked at the heritage centre to have a nosey. The amount of do not shit or light fires here signs makes me not want to add to the negative impact so I’m going to bail out of the NC500 and go inland next.

Car running well – it was designed for these types of roads/roadtrips. It would be wasted driving round a city centre!

regarding the Nordisk Ydun tents mentioned above/previously I’m in mine as we speak! Quality is excellent – the guy line adjusters are simple but clever, everything is well stitched, substantial pegs, useful ventilation windows…..however, you’d have to be very good friends to have 4 of you in here. They are a spacious 2 man at most.

They are heavy due to the polycotton but are otherwise a bargain if you are looking for a decent carpacking tent.

almost rusted over retaining screw and I think ‘**** this

Try and undo it – if it rounds off or chews up just drill the head off as mentioned above. My Pug partner has a snapped one – even though I have Dormer extractors, rothenberger MAPP blowtorch, every handtool you can think of and access to a full machine shop at work……I’ve not bothered removing it as they don’t actually do anything.

@retrorick

Midges aren’t great – it’s been raining for a few days up till this afternoon (I didn’t set off till the forecast got better) and it’s a nice still evening. Smidge is working well though.

I did a few full boot redline overtakes of dawdling hire campervans near Glencoe so I don’t think the economy is bad.

Yep – it’s a Buzzrack, the boot isn’t massive and I have to make sure Bert has enough room so the tent is in one box and cooking gear in the other. If it wasn’t for Bert they’d fit inside Tetris style. Very adjustable, easy to fit and solid when tightened up. I think it’s possibly better and cheaper than the Thule Easybase’s I kept an eye on eBay (Thule no longer make them).

tthewFull Member
I’ve never seen a space saver spare like that. Is it solid?

It has a collapsible sidewall – there’s a factory fit 12v air compressor to inflate it in the tool kit. It’s never been used which means it might be utter crap and easier to ring the AA?

Currently in Speen Bridge with the PSA Nordisk tent.

It’s your son’s car – do the discs as well.

Another top tip, if I’m doing anything mechanically complex especially on unfamiliar/safety systems get a red and green paint maker pen. Mark the bolt heads red when they are being removed and then mark them green once refitted and torqued.

I just use a large G-clamp on my Pug brakes which are a very similar set up to the C1 (according to the video I posted). Universal wind back tools are cheap on eBay/Amazon.

Remember to take the resourvoir lid off and put a rag underneath it especially if the fluid level is already high/topped up.

I’d go with brembo pads and I’m running Brembo discs on the front of my Peugeot Partner – they are very keen almost Shimano like.

I do my own tinkering in our cars and have done for years- I must have saved 10’s of thousands doing so. I get my parts from Autodoc which have good DIY videos on common jobs including the brakes on a C1.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAa6u-AsWeI

The job looks easy. But!…….as always with car tinkering you can be one snapped bolt away from the car being out of commission and a whole world of mission creep and swearing.

SGS have a good range of jacks and axle stands for DIY use

Another engine oil service as it recently clicked over at 170k also PAS fluid change. Fuel tank brimmed with 470mile range showing.

Last minute rusted exhaust heat shield studs ground off and riv nuts fitted with stainless bolts.

Few extra tools, footpump, LR bottle jack, packets of epoxy, cable ties, jump leads, footpump, anchovies, and bottle of coolant stuffed into the space saver and rear storage areas

Recent PSA Nordisk tent packed. Fridge freezer stocked with Bert’s raw food and a few arrival beers.

Sat nav programmed for Fort William, alarm set for 6am……..

Carbon – questionable environmental aspects,

Aluminium – harsh, unless small diameter tubes then work hardening is an issue

Ti – has to be welded under conditions that the majority of the bike industry cannot achieve.

Steel – if it was invented tomorrow would be touted as the wonder metal for bike frames.

My only cycling regret was selling a steel framed gravel bike that I’d done lots thousands of miles on.

what happened in that Parisian tunnel

I crashed in the same tunnel. On a skateboard.

Got the death wobbles going down into the tunnel from loose trucks and skinned my knees. I felt Lady Di watching over me tutting at my lack of style as Parisians looking like extras from a John Paul Gaultier advert whizzed on by with their inline skates*

*I worked in the outskirts of Paris and the inner ring road was closed every Sunday?/once a month? (Can’t remember) for locals to cycle/inline and I used to ‘board around Paris on my weekends off.

I used to be an F1 petrolhead (been to Silverstone, would watch all the races) until it disappeared behind a paywall and the free coverage was crap.

Same with DH – I’ve had loads of DH bikes, rode Les Arc and Morzine many times, been going to Fort William WCDH for many years and then it went behind a paywall and/or the coverage became crap.

These interests aren’t the centre of my world so as soon as it’s becomes even slightly more difficult than it was then “I’m out”
