I was going to buy an old 110, but a T3 just seemed much nicer!

I know you dont mean that……

What do you need to do to it?

not much……….

……..Welding the underneath of the front steps/forward of the wheel arch on both sides, underneath of the sliding door sill/runner area, front wheel bearings, full gear linkage bush/bearing replacement (virtually impossible to select reverse due to the amount of slop), its using loads of water so possible HG/waterpump/something else change?, burning water&oil on startup so possible valve stem /top end job, reposition badly installed silence/exhaust system to stop it clanging on the cover/guard, rebushing the front wishbones, decent full service. Probably a 1000 more jobs to add to that list once I get started.

Diesel, watercooled, G reg so 1990ish.
I've got the HBOL (Haynes book of lies) but could do with a parts ID-if these old VW's are anything like LR's every single part is still available providing you can find a number for it.

That was until parents complained about commotion being caused by on lookers whilst parked outside the school."

The older ones were great frames (cant comment on the newer ones)-very stiff rear ends, awesome punch out of tight corners but hard work over fast skittly stuff. Had a '98 ish Mk1 (originally with '98 orange Z1 Bams) which I did everything on from BMX races to DH;

and a MK3 which was more of a hard XC bike, great in Welsh stuff;

Fancied a change though and bought a Bluepig instead.

hi-tensile steel frame-not even basic chromoly, and you'll look a cock. buy one those 2009 Kona Smokes from Ebay/Rutland cycles for £200 instead.

edited to add-goto gallery and check out the dropouts-dogshit;

A mate told me about them-kinda put me off when he said they all different colours of them lined up so presumed they'd be a catalogue fashion fixie thing-allthough I've not seen them myself.
Bought a Kona Smoke for £200 new off Ebay instead.

got the carbonised strand and it looks like oak/red wood, very deep rich glossy colour. the varnish top coat does scuff/scratch though but IIRC it can be lightly sanded upto 6 times? or has it got 6 layers of varnish? but i can be sanded back and re varnished okay.

Oh!! The only thing i like about the defender is the looks, it does indeed look like a proper offroader, but if you do very little offroad I think its the wrong car for you

It is THE offroader.

Another point for Landrovers is that they simple mechanical things that last a long time even if you never go offroad in them. Yes they may have oil leaks and the odd reliability problem-thats because at the age those issues appear 'normal' cars are in the scrappers. You buy a Lanny and you have it for life. Mines 20 year old, it'll still be with me in another 20 years. The Sooty Van L400 that once pulled me out of the mud from 20 foot away with a towrope will be long gone.

RNP – How big are you?

Just over 6'5" and 95kg's ish but ride pretty hard. Didnt expect Gustav power but with the servo wave gubbins thought they'd be allright, got there in the end but a 'budget' brake became the same price as some hopes/maguras

One of the reasons I love my Lanny is because……….

….my wife can fix it?

er nope, its because it has plenty of room for stuff like this….

that after 20 minutes at 60mph to the next services…….

becomes a little tasty snack…….

(chicken breast wrapped in parma ham cooked with a little garlic butter!)

We've perfected bacon butty's , garlic prawns, we did some potatoe daphinoise (but over cooked it), sausages, braising steak and loads of other things on the way to places, nothing funnier than turning up at a campsite, opening the bonnet with fellow campers tutting at the unreliable broken down Lanny only to remove your cooked food from the engine bay and crack an ice cold beer open from the on board freezer.

what size is that? it was a toss up between an XL Sov or a 20" Bluepig, it was only the price that put me off

I find SLX have been a bit lacking in power. Started off with 180/160mm standard setup, fully bled through a few times. Changed pads to sintered, changed to Hel hoses, finally went to XTR 203/180mm discs and got the power I was after.

I do like overly powerfull brakes though and had 210mm/190mm Gustavs on my DH bike.

"Im borrowing the 90 next week to see how i get along with it and as soon as i mentioned it at work a guy with a 300Tdi Disco mentioned he might be selling that and also may take my Volvo off me. The Disco is very good condition, 3 door with no sunroof which appeals to avoid some of the corrosion issues. Borrowing both to see how i get on."

Pull the boot carpet up and poke around with a screwdriver-marvel at how a big hole appears, check the inner wings, inside of the lower sills, lower boot lip 'crossmember' unless its a Jap import, or been waxoyled from new-it'll be rusting somewhere.

"I also find it very easy to pop the front up despite being a bit more 'over the bars'. "
I actually find it a bit harder to pop the front than my previous Chameleon even with dropping down 20mm to a 50mm stem.

I think its a bike you need to man up to a bit and show it who's boss, get over the front moto style and wring its neck sorta thing knowing the slack head angles working in your favour.

Had both of my Brooklyn's coated there and the finish was like glass.
£35 for the hardtail, and £65 for the Racelink front & swingarm, brake arm, and a pair of Profile cranks. All masked properly-they're used to dealing with motorbike parts.

Had them both done in black didnt ask about one off colours.

Use my 110 hardtop as my daily driver, (long) DH bikes can fit in no probs stood upright. Friends 90 will only do bikes with the front wheel off.
110 hardtop/vans are the cheapest Defender to buy-although if you've found a good 90 then go for it, it wont loose any value even if you sell it if you dont like it.

Change the transfer box to one from a Discovery (dead easy&cheap to do) if you do lots of m-way miles.

As above MK1 Disco's are cheap but complete rot boxes.

I've been out all day on my 'Pig and you know what I was gonna write a load of rambling tech filled twaddle, but half way through I remembered a magazine test article from years ago in Invert or Dig BMX mag that the Irish BMXer Will Smyth wrote about about the 1st S&M frame Chris Moeller ever made-the MadDog. It had double dropouts (if you read it you'll know)

In it he said it felt to him like the first real proper bike you ever owned and loved, that you just always wanted to ride, no bull-shit, just a **** great bike to ride, and ride, and ride, everywhere, everything, just ride it, after school, weekends, rain or shine, just get on and ride it.
I bought one soon after. One of the best bikes I ever owned.

Fast forward 20 (ish) years. That same article-just change the name Maddog to Bluepig.

bit of overspray in the seattube/bb and its a bit orange peeley in places but nothing a bit of t-cut wont sort. Not an issue for the money.

Personally I cant see it being a goer, in the past I've only bought non-Taiwan when its been uber niche (BrooklynMachineWorks) and paid a premium for it but only because of the design and not for a percieved increase in quality.
I dont think you can get much better than Taiwan built nowadays unless your talking expensive custom handbuilt one-offs.
There's no way I'd pay a premium for a UK built frame over a Taiwan equiv, and I doubt the quality would be any better from the UK.

edited to add though that something from T45 could tempt me.

My Bluepig arrived yesterday, Im curious to know (but dont expect an answer) on how Brant can make much money per unit on a £260 retailed frame thats wholesaled through Hotlines/CRC with the amount of tube manipulation on them and unique to Ragley/non catalogue cable guides/dropouts and chainstay 'fingers'. I think he claws a bit back with having Mr Wong paint them with half a potatoe though!

Good old 4130 Chromoly, jackshaft drivetrain for bob-free pedalling, brake arm for isolated braking. The best suspension ever made for a bike-forget the joke that is Fox, Avalanche Racing-custom valved to your weight&riding style, had one on a previous bike to the Brooklyn-the best money I ever spent on bike suspension.
Long low bikes for stupidly high speed Alps riding, stick to the floor plough bikes with bottomless travel when coupled with the Avy fork.

Would last an Alps season for every year for the rest of your life and still be going strong.

The only time I've shed a tear in the last 10-15 years was when I packed mine up to send to its new owner in Norway.
