    @timba

I’ve come on a bit since the mighty Prairie days. We had so many awesome bike and snowboarding roadtrips in that absolute shed of a car before it eventually died of rust :(

    necessary knowledge

When you run older cars everyone has already had the same problems and they are widely documented on forums etc.

    skills

No particular skills needed for this particular job, just patience and determination (it’s a bloody awful job that I hate doing). The factory Porsche workshop manual and parts ID is available FOC online for any major tinkering. I haven’t had to make any specific tooling yet and have used normal hand tools.

    Space

All the jobs on this Porsche have been done outside. It requires a bit of planning and luck with the weather – ie get the car prepped for winter when the weather is nice.

    Time

Is the thing I have plenty of which is probably the main difference.

    @countzero
    – keep an eye on autotrader, there are the occasional unmolested genuine cars that values have been dragged down by the blinged up gangsta wanna be pimped Cayennes. Theres a silver 955 in London with the very rare tailgate spare wheel carrier – it might even have the ultra rare locking rear differential. A V6 on coils is pretty easy to maintain, avoid the V8’s and diesels if running on a shoestring and stick to pre 2006 for lower road fund.

We closed a motorway (dual carriageway) as kids. There were some major sewer works taking place so a local road had been closed in preparation. Lots of plywood shuttering had been delivered. Our Goonies style gang of skateboarding warriors pinched a few sheets to build our version of the Powell Peralta* Animal Chin ramp but we needed some structural underpinning wood. We decided to reverse engineer a local farmers fence…….his sheep then escaped onto the A56 southbound and closed it.

    Yes we were idiots.

*One of the crew went on to start (and still owns) what would be become a huge worldwide skateboard company, lives in the States and is still a good friend. He’s met Stacy Peralta so the subsequent massive bollocking from parents and school would go on to be worth it. The farmer got his painful revenge some time later…..

    Cool!

Shame about the cruise…. That would have been handy.

What will you do about the rear subframe (seeing as you’re not scared of taking cars apart!)?

    Small update.

    Cruise control

Porsche want ~£500 for the cruise control retro fit kit which consists of the stalk, short length of cable and two pins for the cable to connect into the steering wheel module and main loom. You can’t buy the stalk on its own, but the pins are available separately for less than £2.

Ive bought a complete steering wheel module from an Audi Q7 (functionally the same as a Cayenne) for £15 off eBay. I’ll remove the stalk and fit it to my module.

    Subframe.

Made myself comfy with a bit of foam seeing as I’m going to be under here for quite a few hours! Ground/scraped/chiseled the rust off, treated with Bilt Hamber, let that cure then brushed Bilt Hamber Dynax over the top. I’m going to source a spare subframe, have it shot blasted and do it properly like I’ve done with my XC90 subframe but this will do for this winter’s protection.

Popped the front sill covers off and surprisingly both sides were really good condition, there are some horror stories online of major rot in this area. Hosed a lot of compacted dirt out then popped the covers back on.

And finally – ferry booked yesterday for Christmas road trip…..

Thanks for some great recommendations here for what has been a tiresome issue. Just letting it fall over is not an option as the smell of egg can be horrendous. Bought a collapsible crate for the car.

Are there many other aspects of your life STW can give advise on?

I’m not understanding this – it’s the UK home round of the World Cup downhill and everyone is shrugging their shoulders and meh with its demise.

The top section is fast and brutal but doesn’t come across on TV??? That’s not a fault of the course.

Lack of camera coverage in the woods isn’t a fault of the course

    Motorway = TV spectacle

Too far for teams to travel? It’s a historic track in a country that’s been pivotal to the sport, there’s no other gondola mountain in the UK and they’ve been driving here for 20years including post Brexit so I’m not buying that either.

If Discovery/UCI meddling has resulted in less coverage for the sport/less revenue then that’s not a fault of FW.

    Caught up on this series.

Lighthouse / 1st episode. Guy was a complete ****, knew full well what he was doing regarding planning, the party wall and chimney looked pretty knackered and were left exposed for too long. His contractors obviously like his coin as otherwise they’d have told him to **** off years ago.

Felt sorry for the guy next door and the son.

Episode 2, I couldn’t figure the angle with the farmer and his son but the build turned out okay and the young couple were likeable. £3k a month mortgage though!!!!!!!

Episode 3. MrsRNP favourite ever GD because of the woman her positive attitude and the finished interior fit out and style, lad was a grafter.

Kev’s cars have come on a bit – I remember very early episodes where he drove an ex military Landrover Series 3

I looked at these when they first came out as they were revolutionary at the time. I had my misgivings that the small turbo engine would last. Fast forward a decade or more and I remembered going viewing them and was wondering how they’d faired. A googling showed that they were actually fairly bulletproof although the sluggish gearbox was a bit rubbish.

A good friend of mine has recently done a deal/trade swop for a Roadster and is loving it.

How do I get rid of the adverts? I’ve cleared browsing history and data in IOS Safari but they are still there.

    [Mod] from Mark’s recent post:

We are now using a metatag rather than a cookie to determine your ad status. For those that know how to check the metatag is called ezoic_ad_suppression

That tag should be present on every page while your are logged in as a full member.

One issue this has brought to our attention is that clearing cookies now won’t fix the problem if you are seeing ads when you shouldn’t. What we suspect may be happening in those cases is that your browser is serving a version of the page from it’s own internal cache that does not have this metatag. That may happen if your browser caches the page before you login and after you are logged in it serves up that cached version of the page without the metatag.

Clearing the stored cache data on your device could fix this. This is how you do this on a mobile device.

On Android in chrome click the three dots and then select ‘Clear Browsing Data.’

On iOS Chrome click the three dots and tnen click ‘Delete browsing data’

Instructions for other browsers on mobile may vary but essentailly you are looking to clear out any stored cached page files from the site. This shoudl result in you getting a clean verion of the page with the metatag present.

Let me know how you get on with that.

I work in the PU industry and helped develop these materials and equipment ~ 30years ago.

The sprayed foam itself is fine – it’s a good insulant and completely inert once applied and cured, the issue is the cowboys that moved into the game. As mentioned above it covers up a multitude of sins (and is effectively marketed as such “got slipping tiles/slates because the nails are knackered? Spray foam!). It also stops air flow and the roof space from ‘breathing’

It could be slowly and painfully hacked off the joists/roof beams but no chance of the felt.

    New roof time.

I’ve got the Montane Hydrogen and the extreme jacket. Both are my go to winter jackets if I’m doing a big hike . If it’s just a doggo walk round the block then I use a regular waterproof jacket. The hydrogen gets more use as it’s the perfect thickness/weight.

I bought Montane as they came with hoods where Buffalo they are extra.

Membrane waterproofs don’t work for me as I walk quickly and generate a lot of heat.

Anything that increases sprung Vs unsprung weight will improve suspension performance and a tuned mass dampener is effectively a way increasing the sprung mass but there are too many variables for the layperson to tune a mass dampener correctly. You’d be better off cable tying lumps of lead to the frame Chris Porter style…….or buying a (heavy framed) ebike

Don’t think the good old Volvo museum is at the factory any more. Think it is now “World of Volvo” next to the theme park with about half the exhibits :-(

Correct – the touring T5R is no longer in the display.

Paddy and Chris’ V70 Cross Country was lovely – I wonder if Volvo lent it them as they are quite rare? (I very nearly bought a red one but it wasn’t as described when I went to pick it up)

Join the Berlingo forum – I’m on there for my older version and it’s a good source of info.

I know the early versions of that engine have suffered timing chain issue’s and that there’s a revision to a thicker chain but that’s only from idly reading the Berlingo forum. The petrol is a wet belt.

It’s now free for UK-based private sellers to sell on eBay (excluding motors: Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles listings). You won’t pay final value fees or regulatory operating fees when your items sell.

Fees will apply if you list more than 300 items in a month, if you add optional upgrades to your listing, or if you deliver to an overseas address. See our FAQs – opens in new window or tab for additional details.

Had our V70 for lots of years and ran it alongside my Defender110 through a few winters for comparison.

We bought it with new Vredestein full winter tyres – they were as you expect very good in both fresh and packed snow – better than the 4×4 LR on BFG all terrains. I ran them through the summer and they wore fairly quickly

Changed to Michelin cross climates which were as good in winter but quieter than the Vredestein in summer.

Recently I’ve gone to Bridgestone ‘rain tyre’ – bit cheaper than CC’s but appear to be wearing quicker and have a louder dead ‘boomy’ noise to them. Will replace them with CC again.

No idea on ‘sportiness’ as it’s a big heavy wobbly Volvo.

Tldr. Normal car/driver – just buy Cross Climates.

Not watched this yet but we are planning a big road trip for our 20th wedding anniversary next year with our caravan.

Thinking of Harwich to hook of Holland, up through a bit of Germany then Kiel to Gothenburg and the Volvo museum!
