Thanks again to everyone who has replied so far, any further recommendations would be great.
RustyMacFree MemberOk,
Please excuse my excitement here, I have a Iron Horse MkIII which has an internal/zero stack headset which i am pretty sure has an ID of 44mm do these new headsets mean i can put an external bearing'd 1.5 inch headset into this frame which will help slacken the steep head angle and alow me to run tapered forks?
RustyMacFree MemberSorry to hijack you thred a little but i am looking at getting into building my own wheels (winter project), i have got the guide from the wheelpro website and am going to be shortly looking into building the truing stand in his guide. I to have not been terribly impressed with my local shops wheel building skills and with the price i just paid for what i got i feel it is time I taught myself. Have you guys got any hints, tips, tricks or advice you can pass on to a newbie?
Cheers
Rusty
RustyMacFree MemberPlease excuse the dumb @ss question. Is 44mm the standard size for inch and a half or is it the standard size of a internal/zero stack head tubes?
RustyMacFree MemberUse concrete, make a big a hole as you can, i chucked in some wire mesh and lerger granite stones to bulk it up. If you need to smooth off the top you can put a skim of cement over it once the concrete has set.
B&Q have ready mixed bags you just add water to. Buy more than you think you will need as it is suprising how much you will use and you can always take any un opened bags back to B&Q
RustyMacFree Membera quick google finds these :-
And i can't find any videos on youtube showing people getting into them. i know they have been reviewed well in motorbike mags – saw a test in a mag at the local fish and chip shop.
RustyMacFree MemberAs posted in other thred. I have heard good things about these almax chains and locks.
The videos on the home page make interesting viewing.
RustyMacFree MemberMy bikes will be going in the shed when it is finnished. That is where i have been able to fit a ground anchor. And they will be secured with this chain. Check out the videos on the home page to see how stron it is.
There is simply no space in my flat for them with out having to move them constantly to do stuff like get clothes out the wardrobe or hoover the hallway.
At the end of the day if the scumbags want them they will find a way of getting them whether they are in the house, gearrage or even a secure shed.
RustyMacFree MemberI just moved from BT to Sky. Had had enough of vision. The basic stuff like getting the freeview channels and having a digital recorder are good as is the menu system however the additional stuff like on demand, movie rental especially in HD are terrible if you have a low broadband speed. For example if you want a high def movie you need to first download it to your vision box and then watch it from there i had a speed a little over 3 meg and it took almost 6 hours to download one movie.
Power line adapters are a pain in the @rse. Box would crash almost on a monthly basis. Look closely at the broadband contract for leaving them too, i tried to downgrade my service and was told I would have to pay a charge for this that equated to more than the difference of the rest of my contract period at the higher price.
I may just be bitter about my BT experience but I’d be sticking with sky
RustyMacFree MemberThe units themselves are fairly cheap. I had a look into replacing my clunky old timer with the same wireless contoller that my girlfriend just had fitted on her brand new baxi boiler. The unit is a salus RT500RF, I have seen these on ebay for as little as £35 but have no ideas as to how difficult it would be wire up the sender unit to the boiler.
The above link takes you to an ebay advert for the timer i was concidering, at the bottom of the advert there is various technical info that will possibly help
good luck finding out about the wiring, i'd be interested to see what you find out.
RustyMacFree MemberUsed to live in Gullane, never biked to Edinburgh but the route the Flying Ox suggests would be the way i would go. I believe the train from North Berwick is pretty busy in the morning. It may not be a bad idea to check on availability for taking a bike during peak times.
RustyMacFree MemberOh wow i really like that song!
have you got it o CD or Compact Disk?
from back in the day when tapes were still socially acceptable.
RustyMacFree Memberrkk01 is on the ball with this one.
I use a similar method to sort out my juicy brakes. I push one piston out as far as it will go (not to worried about it going past the seal and air getting in) put some silicon grease on a cotton bud and smear it round the piston then push back in and repeat for the other side.
I then bleed the brakes encase any air has got in during the fix or during use if the piston has been sticky.
On one set this did not help so I had to strip the calliper down and replace the pistons and seals (kit for juicies was less then a tenner so i guess elixirs will be about the same price) however when I did this I found a swarf of metal in the o-ring groove which must have been remnance of manufacture, once removed problem was sorted.
Bleed kit wise i am fairly confident the Avid bleed kit fits all avid brakes.
good luck with the quick fix. It may take a couple of smears of grease to get the full effect.
RustyMacFree MemberI got my latest matress for £200 from blindcraft in edinburgh, nice and firm but comfy. I had had the same matress on another bed that i liked so got the same agian.
My girlfriend just bought a double matress from John Lewis after testing heaps. Think it was about £375 and it is very comfy. John Lewis had lots to try out so if you don't know what you want it may be a good place to start.
Good luck
RustyMacFree MemberOops,
Restaurent is still very good, now just a little bit closer
RustyMacFree MemberI was taken to this restaurent for Graduating. You may need to bokk as it was not the biggest place but prices seemed very reasonable for the standard of food which was excelent.
Blonde[/url]It is not too far from Waverly Station, abouot 3 miles but you will get to walk past alot of street shows happening in the fringe.
DirectionsRustyMacFree MemberIf you find you are struggling for space put one of the bikes the opposite way to the other and take the inside pedals off, this way they can be secured closer to each other giving greater space for your roof box. Ive seen this method used on smaller cars like fiestas and polos. Just remember to check the maximum weight your rack can hold before you jam your roof box full.
Good luck i'm sure you'll find something suitable
RustyMacFree MemberThat's what i'm trying to weigh up at the moment, van hire and a 300 mile round trip will be about £100 ish at a weekend and i can't go through the week. was hoping i could get a courier for less.
RustyMacFree MemberSounds like a water pressure thing to me. check the pressure gage on the boiler, recommended pressure should be in the instruction manual. My boiler works best at 1.5 bar
RustyMacFree MemberHey Radek,
I'm just back from a weekend in Krakow, had a fantastic time there, my girlfriend is from Slovakia so i think is going to be taking me to the Tatras this summer for a bit of hiking. If the food beer and scenery is is good in the mountains as the cities then i'm sure it'd be a fantastic destination.
I was well impressed with poland, would definately concider it as a biking destination. try and get some videos of the biking up on your website to tempt people even further.
cheers and good luck
RustyMacFree MemberHappened to me a couple of times with a deore octalink crank set, also tried loctite to no avail. In the end it just seemed like a good excuse to upgrade to a new SLX crank set.
The old cranks are now resting at the bottom of my spares bin to be used in emergencies only.
It may be worth thinking if you are just throwing good money after bad to try and fix a re-occuring problem.
RustyMacFree MemberI recently bought a Makita 18v cordless drill and for general around the house work it has been spot on, wouldn’t dream of using it for drilling trough the granite walls but it has managed to drill through a red brick without any fuss.
Lithium ion batteries are good to look out for, charge quickly and seem to last a long time.
3 other work mates of mine also picked up the same Makita drill when they were on sale in B and Q and they are all suitably impressed with it.
It’s this one
nullRustyMacFree MemberWhen i was on holiday in Austria, the bars had a policy of 20 cents return on a bottle of beer, they then returnrd the empty bottles to the supplier who gave the correct bottles to the breweries to washed and re-used them. I thought this was a grea idea for a couple of reasons but mainly as it ment the busy bars could have more staff on serving rather than collecting bottles.
They did a similar thing with glases too, amazing how when you pay a deposit for a glass you make extra sure not to drop it.
RustyMacFree MemberNo cable in my area, main gripe was slow broadband speed when their tv sevice relies hevily on a pretty decent speed, tried asking if they were going to be getting fibe optic in Aberdeen city centre any time soon was told un likely. The asked if the archaic system we currently have will be made any better in the mean time and got a flat out nope.
A couple of meg boadband should do me fine for surfing and using skype to call abroad. Not really one for downloading music and movies and that still happy to buy a CD or DVD as and when i want.
RustyMacFree MemberI wish i had your experiance coffeking, unfortunatly for me mine was almost exactly the polar opposite of that.
RustyMacFree MemberAnother free way to find out a little info about a car if you have the registration is to go to some of the car tyre web sites and put in the reg plate, they ususally give you a little info about the kind of car it would be, you can also begin to ge an insurance quiote for it and they also usually give you some more info on type, colour model of the car.
i have used both these methods for finding out if parts i have got from the scrap yard will actually fit my car.
Both are free too.
RustyMacFree MemberHi you get special keys for head units that fit in thoes slots at the sides of the unit. They are manufaturer specific i.e sony, kenwood etc.
You can get them from Halfords for about a fiver. If the new unit is the same manufaturer as the old one then you generally get a pair of these keys with a new unit so you could be in luck.
Good luck

RustyMacFree MemberI'd recommend roof mounted carriers as well. I have previously used boot mounted carriers and they never feel very secure, the bikes get scratched against each other and if you have a spoiler or plastic rear bumper they are almost entirely useless (you can't get the tension on the cords to keep it secure bumper flexes)
I have a polo and have Thule aero bars with mont blank baracuda carriers. For every day city driving i just leve them on and don't really notice any difference in fuel economy however for longet journeys the bars stay on but hte carriers are removed as i have noticed poorer fuel economy if they are not removed.
When they are already on the car it is a 2 minute job to put the bike on which is great for spur of the moment post work biking. I can happily manage to put the bike on by myself and have never scratched or bashed the car with a bike.
RustyMacFree MemberThis may help, but may also may be a little too technical. it is a link to fox suspensions tech help website. It will give you the manual for your forks and should explain how to set them up.
RustyMacFree MemberFitting Kitchen cabinet doors, fitting handles to said doors
Buying then fitting a chandelier in the lounge
Moving light from bedroom to kitchen
Fitting new light in bedroom (fingers crossed she finds one she likes this time)All of the above a my girlfriends flat
Hopefully then sorting the garden at my flat(strim then cut with mower)
Re-installing wall sockets in bedroom at my flat
Washing bedroom walls in my flat with sugar soap
Removing any last stubborn bits of paper from corners of walls and ceiling in my flatI’m guessing this list will take me till about Tuesday so no biking for me this weekend :(
RustyMacFree MemberNew Pikes are only available in coil now.

RustyMacFree MemberThe fork does have wind down, may have a look into your idea joeegg.
@seanodav and peteimpreza just re-checked and they do have more manitou springs than previously but don't think any are for my fork will drop them an email and see what they say.
RustyMacFree Member*raises hand*
