So far i have tried the kitchen work surface, the granite hearth in the living room and on the floor in the bedroom just so my neighbor down stairs doesn’t think i am discriminating when making a racket in my flat.

Looking back at the pic in your first post it looks like the upper crown race is sitting a good 5mm onto the taper of the steerer, surely as you have suggested a modified top cup with additional spacing to house a external headset is going to be the best solution.

Have you heard anything back from BETD?

Yup one of them there superstar jobbers and one of these

similar to 12mm, still QR = winner. Tis what i have planned for my Iron Horse Mk iii

ir_bandito most drop outs take 10mm as standard you could upgrade to 10mm bolt up or 10mm through bolt with a DT Swiss QR if you are feeling flush or a superstar one for cheep. There is alot of stories about the 12mm Maxle light breaking and the 12mm hope centre tube failing under load.

    Pete,

BETD made or make a 44mm to 1 1/8 reducer, i was thinking of getting one for the lower cup of my Iron Horse to slacken it off. I would immagine this could be installed in the top cup of your 456 then a standard 1 1/8 external headset top cup pressed into the reducer.

You may have to machine a little out of the bottom ID of the adapter from BETD to accomodate the taper and i’d check the length of insertionn of the standard headset so that doesn’t foul the taper either.

From memory it is the Giant AC on you would need but do not quote me on this, they were pretty quick in getting back to me when i was enquiring.

    good luck

Just biked into work for the first time today. 6.5-7 miles in 45 minutes, feel refreshed but wheezing a bit. Was glad of the shower at work, now can’t wait for the ride home.

Just got my Iron Horse Mk iii back from a full service at KaTec, great communication by email from Kael(Kease). He was totally honest with what was required, in the end only 2 of the 4 pairs of bearings were shot the other 2 pairs were inspected then re packed with grease, frame alignment was checked as with air can on shock and the bushes were replaced. Bike feels like new, previously had play in the rear now nothing.

In person and via email he is a totally sound guy and has given me a lot of good advice, I’d be happy to recomend him to my mates.

When you are looking for bushings and or a fitting tool for fox shocks, some people adveritse them as 1/2 inch, this is the same as 12.7mm as ltheisinger told you before. Makes sense when you think about it but it was confusing me earlier. :-)

    This is kease’s sebay shop

    http://shop.ebay.co.uk/airborne10101/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562

I had a quick look but i didn’t see any listings for pro 2 bearings however i just dropped my Iron horse fame in with him yesterday and i am sure he had some of the pro 2 bearings in stock.

email him on the address that druidh gave above and i’m sure he’ll be able to sort you out, he has really helped me out with my frame.

So where do I meet them?

When you get to Aberdeen try a club called Babylon above The College bar.

The nice areas of town to look at are Ferryhill, Ruthrieston, West End, Rosemount. A one bed in these parts of town will be £550+/month.

Try looking on the websites like myroommate etc, my girlfriend found quite a few good places to stay that way. I lived in a 3 bed house in Ferryhill, just by duthy park for 2.5 years and was paying £350/month so flat/house sharing is cheeper if you don’t mind living with others.

Have a look at chain reactions just now, they have quite a few manitou swinger shocks 3 and 4 way on offer, you could get a new shock new spring from them £150-200ish then send it off to be custom tuned to your bike for £250 ish.

I don’t know much about coil shocks to know if the Fox Van R has more or less adjustment than a swinger 3 or 4 way but it could be an option.

Top guide, have book marked it. I’ll need to get hold of some oil, circlip pliers and a socket set before i can atack them so they will have to stay as they are for the imidiate future.

looks a good kit, would be even nicer if the builder sends the case off for anodising.

    Hey Pete,

Don’t suppose you have one of your legendry guides on how to do this “converted to crown mounted dial” the pop lock seems a hell of a faf. I’m used to the crown mount on my old 409 revs on my other bike and would like the same on this one.

didn’t realise they were set at 140 to start with! may actually suit my bike better that way.

Bought the same fork as Pete, just installed it in my Iron Horse Mkiii frame last night so looking forward to the weekend for testing it out. No U-Turn but it does have lock out.

I think you may be a little ambitious with your plans of how much you will be able to store in a shed that size. I have an 8×6 shed and with 3 bikes and gardening stuff there is nowhere to move to use it as a workshop. I laid some extra slaps out the front of my shed to give me an area to work on with my bike stand.
Before you go with the concrete base and make it a permanent fixture have a think if the shed will add to the value of the property? If not go with slabs then build on top of them so it can be removed in future to leave a patio.
Install a ground anchor in whatever base you go for to give you a secure point to lock your bikes to.
Wood wise most sheds are made of treated pine. The ones made of chip board or compressed wood are normally cheap, if the wood gets wet it will expand and be weak.
Have a look at http://www.tigersheds.com to see how they build their sheds to get some ideas of how to build yours.

Long bolt is 45mm, short bolt is 40mm. Just measured the ones i am about to put on my new forks.

If you have longer bolts than you require, simply get a nut, spin it onto the bolt past where you need to cut it, cut bolt, spin nut up to mark and file end smooth. this should ensure you preserve the thread on the end of the bolt preventing any cross threading when put into the fork.

Stunning day in Aberdeen, which made the first bike ride of the year pretty damn fine. The joys of having a recurring chest infection has meant my lungs are still kind of weak but a casual potter along the old railway line was a great way of getting back my lung capacity a little so I can hopefully start cycling to work to build them up good and proper to make the most of summer.

Kease, what forks did you go for in the end?

No carbon to worry about fortunately. I think I’ll go for that Sealey one as it will cover my suspension bolts and will go high enough for anything else like bottom bracket installs, then worry about getting something that will cover the smaller ranges at a later date. I can also use the Sealey on for work on my car too which will make it a more worthwhile purchase.

cheers votchy, but the BBB one doesn’t go high enough for my suspension pivots.

    Hey jond

I went 830mA in both of mine, one is XPE one is XPG with the idea one would compliment the other, used to run one 20w tight and one 20w wide beam halogen and figured this set up would be the same but brighter.

Lyriks and Fox36’s are generally heavier and longer travel than you may want. Sektors/Revelations/Pikes may be more suited to the Commy

Have a look HERE 2011 U-Turn Sectors with either 20 or 15mm Maxle for 289EUR = £250ish some others off here have bought them recently. that would be my bet.

We use heat guns at work, like the type you would use for removing gloss paint.

Tapping it or hitting it with a rubber mallet really will help.

    Cheers Brant,

Any chance of you designing and manufacturing a 44EEOS model, non deep cup especially a lower so that we don’t have to machine a little off the current lower cup of a 44IETS-DC to fit tapered forks into frames designed to house standard intigrated 44mm headsets.

As this thread shows a few people have proceded and modified them to get it to work already so it would seem there could be a market for them.

    Cheers

Have to agree, absolutely cracking movie. I have really enjoyed most of Clint Eastwood’s films from the past few years, i think he has matured into a excelent director.

ahwiles how did you get on with your drunken battering?

a second slightly more refined option for you could be getting a section of M12 bar, a couple of bolts and some washers progressively getting larger to match/exceed the size of the headset and head tube then do one half at a time and use a large spanner and squeeze each side in. I would think you could get all the bits from a local fasteners for under a tenner.

Let me know how you got on please, I will be doing this at the end of the month :-)

cheers for that, how are you finding the headset/tapered forks?

I’m going to be ordering one at the end of the month to get a set of the cheep Revelation RLT forks from merlin fitted.

I’ve got a 08 MkIII that i am in the process of doing up. I rode it most of last summer with a mish mash of parts but still loved it for blasting round the local trails. It is my first full sus so don’t have much to compare it with, but i don’t notice pedal bob when seated and when i am out of the saddle for downhill sections the suspension feels alive.

In the process of building new wheels with a 10mm rear axel and putting a new rock shock revelation RLT tapered fork with 15mm axel in it with a nuke proof headset. Hopefull this will stiffen it all up a little as my mate who compared it to his Lap Spicy said it was a bit more flexy.
Some of that will have been due to a more xc rear wheel and fox forks in desperate need of some new bushes and a damn good service.
