Recomend me a good chainset with bottom bracket for under fifty quid?

    Shimano Deore at merlin?

If you can not wait for parts to be sent from an online retailer if you remove one of the bolts and go to your local fasteners you should be able to geta M6 x 20mm (a more common sized bolt) with the correct head for a few pennies.

With the crank arms being tapped all the way through the extra 1mm will not make a difference performace wise but the do stick out a little.

If i was concidering a new lock for a shopper bike i’d have a look at this http://www.hiplok.com/

Don’t know how the lock compares to others in regards to strength or resistance to attack but the way you carry it seems wuite good.

For your bar and stem take a look at merlin cycles depending on the length of stem you want have a look at the Truvativ Holzfeller Stem, RaceFace Evolve AM Stem and RaceFace Respond Stem. All of thes stems are about £30 and would go quite well with what an mmmbob is designed to do.

Any of the bars on the site upto £30 will do the job more than adiquately, no real reason to spend more at this point.

As for a groupset, it is hard to look past the full deore 10 speed set at merlin that would also include brakes for £260

[edit] another place to look for your groupset – cranks, bottom bracket, front and rear derailleurs chain and cassette is rose bikes, there site can be a little harder to get round but they offer fantastic prices [/edit]

New wheels unfortunately, your cheapest and easiest option will be buy a secondhand set from the for sale section here. Another palace to look is merlin cycles and on-one they some times have budget wheels on offer.

They look like Revs just an earlier model than 09, they look just like my 06/07

What you are saying really is you have managed to source some more wood but the wife will not let you build another wood store so by calling it a different name “Garden Pavilion” you are going to build yourself another wood store 😉

Oh and if you could copy the design of the glass fronted building then you could watch tennis if you reserected the court.

Cheers for the replies guys, I wish i was in a position to help the charity but figured there would be some single track world fols that may know of someone who the charity could benefit or may be able to support the charity in some way.

RD It might be but the rest of the bike looks so tidy it seemed odd to have something so scruffy on the chain stay 😉

Chain looks a bit tight! you got enough links to get the big gear at the back? Valves and tyre logos not ligned up and it looks like you left some of the packing on it at the back there (the horrible black stuff)

All that aside it looks very pretty, all you need to do now is go out there and get it all dirty.

I have used Nuke proof, FSA and Hope 44mm headsets and all are much of a much ness on the OD, I think you will strugle to find one with a larger OD.

What is the bike specced with when sold new?

I think you would only really know there is a line there as you have built it. At the top it is going to have to taper into the stem any way.

[edit] From my very shaky German it looks like some of the original bike were fitted with a Syncros Hardcore Inside, Semi Integrated 44mm headset, a quick google of this show it to be of very similar design to the other zero stack headsets so would have left a lip in the first place. [/edit]

If the fan was substantially big enough yes, however it would be massively in-efficent, you would be much better to invert said fan and hang it off the back of the boat creating a propeller.

    Aye it would like totally

A Cannondale Prophet could suit at a guess or maybe an Orange ST4. Are you wanting new or secondhand?

The 2.25 Ardents are quite a big tyre volume wise, i run it as a rear tyre, used to run it front and rear but the “vague feeling” made me loose confidence so i swapped it.

As mentioned the Ardent is quote a fast rolling tyre and i love it on the back of my bike. On my hard tail i have it paired with a 2.35 Super Tacky High Roller which is slightly smaller volume and pretty much the same width. On my full sus a Iron Hore Mk3 i have a Rubber Queen balck chili on the front with the Ardent on the rear and I really get on with this set up too.

I would also second the bit about them being pretty rubbish in the mud, the tread on the 2.25 is not masively deep and i think that is the main problem in the mud.

Sound advice from TJ there with putting the nut on before cutting. I’d back the nut off to the cut line and use that to file the end flat, when you un screw the nut you re-dress the treds at the end of the bolt.

Support the hub by the disk mounts on something solid then put a bit of wood over the end of the axle you are about to “tap” then take a regular hammer and give it a good smack, skelp, thump, bash, hit or batter which ever one you prefer.

If this does not work pour hot water over the hub then repete.

FSA Orbit and Nukeproof headsets come with split crown races and are in the £25-40 ish range.

Another option would be look for a used hope one in the for sale section, give it a bit of TLC and it should see you right for a good while.

It is not that i don’t want to support a bricks and mortar buisness, the shop i use is a big chain, i just want to get the best deal possible.

    Think along the lines of

    Headtube = 120mm
Headset Cups = 30-32mm (this is sometimes called stack hight) regular ones are about 15mm high bottom, 18mm top side
Stem hight = 40mm (this is a common ish size)

The thing is, there are many frames that I like when I see them on the rack, but that end up looking terrible on.

How do these online sellers deal with that?

Don’t know how the online places deal with it but i have tried the frames on and like them so don’t think i’ll have that problem, what is concerning me at the moment is the £400+ it is gonna cost for the frames and lenses for me.

What is the beef with the Aldi ones? Saw them the other week in the shop by the beach in Aberdeen and was thinking humm if only i had the space that could be quite handy.

If you are going to be looking at the canyon bike then don’t forget to have a look in there outlet section, at the end of the day i’m gonna guess you will not be too fussed on the size of the frame you buy so this could save you a few hundred euros.

Rose bikes are very competative for parts.
A quick look on there site suggeests you could get a full SLX drive train with XT casette for £225 ish

    From Merlin you could get
Rock Shox Rev RLT’s £335 ish
    Hope hoops for £260 ish

So that is about £820 ish for parts with the wheels being a bit of an extravagent choice.

Can we have an idea of the spec you would class as decent?

have you priced up your ideal spec of parts buying them individually?

I have had one wisdom tooth come through and similar to clubber it was very close to my other molers so was difficult to clean and was beginning to decay, 30 minute apointment with the dentist had it whipped out, the gum healed pretty quickly and so far have had no trouble since. My dentist said he could go down the route of filling it but because of the way it came through it would need constant attention and as it is was essentially surplus to requirements i am unlikely to miss it.

Oh i’m 29 now and have another tooth on its way through at the moment.

Go see a dentist, get some recommendations from people, there are some very good ones out there that will sort you out and some of them are even on the NHS.

Have they provided you with a tracking number for your package? This should be able to tell you where it is.

If they can not provide you a tracking number i would be looking to open a dispute if htere terms stated it would be posted within a timeframe that has now passed.

Is the crown race not gripping on the steerer tube?

the 3 things that spring to mind if this is your problem would be

1 – Wrap steerer in a couple of rounds of plumbers tape, might pack it out enough to get a soilid grip.

2 – Loctite 741 or some such for securing bearings [although that ninja edit by Kingtut may sugest he thought of it first]

3- Get a custom crown race fabricated with a tighter tolerance

I’ve got one of THESE in 8×6.

I put a better lock on the front, bolts through the hinges and a ground anchor in it to lock the bikes to.

At the end of the day if thiefs want in they will get in but hopefully it is enough of a deterant for them not to bother with the hassle.

See HERE for chains, locks and ground anchors.

Is it EDF by any chance?

I had a fun phone call to them last Friday asking why my direct debit for my gas had gone up double. There excuse was they had a new computer system that automatically re-calculated your actual usage when an actual meter reading was given, it does not take into concideration the winter summer trend so had stuff my bill way up. The agreed to reduce my direct debit back down to what it was and i got a letter yesterday confirming the change.

Not got enough space for a full on tool chest but some additional storage would be good.

Being fuilly STW qualified and having absolutely NO building knowledge i would guess at digging down to below lower ground level and laying new foundations then building up from there.

But I think IHN’s explanation my be more accurate 😉

Every day is a school day, I wouldn’t have even thought a frame would be designed with a external lower cup in mind.

I still think Orangejohn will be ok with the steerer length he has but it will be pretty tight.

If Cotic are selling the frames with the Hope headsets as recommended parts then I would hope they would also be able to shed some light on the minimum steerer length a fork would be required to have to fit a particular sized frame.

No mavic rims just now with the intention of getting some stans flows for the last pair to be built, have a park tensionomiter on order from the states as it was half the price of over here so i’ll see how i go once i get that.

[edit]and to get back on topic by tool box currently concists of an old bathroom cabinet in the shed and B&Q box in the flat [/edit]

fair enough offer still stands if you ever do need it. May call on your expert knowlage, seem to be struggling with tensioning the wheels properly at the moment and have another 4 to build in the near future.
