    I must be unlucky.

I lost my Orange P7 (2009) this weekend. It looks like rust has eaten its way through one of the chainstays (near the bridge). I got the frame second hand and did treat it to a waxoyl type treatment. It tended to get used in bad conditions, still surprised by the failure though.

I also lost a Kona Cinder Cone to rust 20+ years ago. It went through where the seat tube meets the bottom bracket.

Thanks for the response. You’re right, a test ride would be the best approach.

I’m on the verge of buying a D3, would an XL be about right for 6’1? I’m long in the leg and arm, shorter torso.

I have tried to see if this has been asked before, but there’s so many pages! 🙂

    (Edit: typo)

I was really interested in the Space Chicken, especially with today’s discount code, but prefer a Shimano drive train. I’ve also had bad experiences with Planet X’s customer care.

I’ve just checked and the Arkose range is discounted at the moment. I’m now very tempted with a D3 or the X….

Just got mine out last week after a summer of aestivation (apparently the summer equivalent of hibernation).

It’s an old Orange P7 in luminous green with sliding drop outs (it replaced a broken Chameleon) – £70 off the Bay
    Rohloff hub
    Tubeless 2.4 tyres
    Old Fox 32s

It gets through and up pretty much anything. Occasionally think about getting rid, but it’s worth nothing (minus the hub) and what would I use instead…

My current fave is Hambini who a friend put me onto last week.

This is the one I started on and it got me hooked. Good if you’ve got a bike engineering interest and like people that call a spade a spade…

Something similar happened to me a few years ago.

Although I’m a Cycling UK member I decided to deal with the insurer direct (Aviva). They did an over the phone ‘injury assessment’ and offered me an amount of money that I was happy with. I decided to accept the offer as it would provide a quick, simple resolution, which wouldn’t have been the case going via solicitors.

They also arranged for my bike to be fixed by the LBS and paid them direct. The only bad experience was the bike shop who were a bit useless and took ages to fix the bike…

To clarify, the chap gave me my wheel back without anything other than a hand shake.

To fuel the discussion on his integrity, his reason for selling on FB was a bit weak – ‘bought in error – thought it was boost’. Also, the alleged Gumtree seller claimed he’d smashed the rear wheel and was getting a new wheel set. But would you sell a complete wheel with tyre and rotor in that scenario? I’d take those bits off first.

Some good news! I was looking on FB marketplace for some tyres on Wednesday night and stumbled across my wheel. I dropped the seller a message and got my wheel back last night. 🙂

The guy claims he bought it off someone on Gumtree, but was happy to hand it back once he knew the history of the wheel.

    Happy days!

    Thanks for your response HF.

It looks like I’ll be driving, which is a shame as I can get an £18 fare from YRK to KGX!

Thanks very much for all the additional recommendations, I’m a bit spoilt for choice now!

I’ll keep an eye on the weather, but it looks like Long Mynd, Mortimer/Bringewood and some Wyre Forest when keeping it local.

I’ll drop you a message B&B once I have a better idea about our plans – appreciate the offer.

Woops! Apologies on the Shropshire mistake, I blame the wife for misinforming me… 🙂

Many thanks for the suggestions, looks like there’s plenty of options to try which is great. The next challenge will be seeing how many passes I can negotiate!

Thanks for the responses. I’ll try adjusting the actuator to see if that helps, otherwise it looks like it’s back to the service centre. The poppet was meant to be replaced as part of the service so maybe it’s some contamination.

Thanks for the replies. Made me feel a little better to know I’m not the only one to have done this…

I’ll call the visitor centre again this morning to see if someone handed it in or if they found it when checking the car park.

    Lesson most definitely learnt!

Another Autoaid user, been with them for years.

    The price is per year.

And you can now also cover your common law partner.

Quote from MSE “Free cover for a husband, wife, civil partner or common-law partner. The same cover applies to your spouse or civil partner, or for those with a common-law partner (though you’ll need to provide proof of the relationship within seven days, eg, both names on a utility bill, shared ownership of residential property or joint lease or rental agreement).”

After doing much research, I bought one of these from this seller.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Meiser-Accu-Gauge-0-15psi-Presta-Valve-Dial-Low-Air-Pressure-Gauge-Fat-Bike-Tire/322004932237?epid=1777268050&hash=item4af8fd568d:g:3BoAAOxy~dNTH-DX

It came quickly and due to the value isn’t subject to import tax/duty.

I’m pleased with it and it does what it says on the tin.

The only insight I can offer is that I have Kinlin XR270/272 rims on my road bike and I find the braking performance is really poor once they’re wet, even with Swissstop pads.

    Thanks also.

Any sizing advice (weight and height) please?

Thanks for all the responses. Loads of promising suggestions that I’ll explore. The Moon/Aldi/Alp Kit ones look good, as do the Lezynes….I don’t feel a decision coming along soon!

    Thanks for the quick responses.

We did Innerleithen yesterday and Glentress today, so were hoping to try something new, before heading back home.

Think we’ll see how tonight goes before deciding (we’re camping!).

    Any more thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

    A fair point Bob.

I’ve only recently started dabbling with the stuff.

I find it very convenient and at 50 pence a serving, cheaper than a pint of milk.

A friend’s road bike had the same issue.

We used the vice technique. Because the bottom bracket kept slipping, we REALLY tightened the vice, to the point the bottom bracket started to deform. That gave the bottom bracket a ‘flat’ face and meant it didn’t slip in the vice.

It eventually worked. We had to check more than once that we were turning the frame the right way.

    A brilliant bike shop.

I use this over my local shops in York who don’t seem to understand the basics of good customer service.

Friend had an On-One frame that cracked. Ending up having to take them to the small claims court. He won of course. But you shouldn’t have to go that far…

I bought one of the early Pompinos several years ago. Various things went wrong with it. Customer service was diabolical. NEVER again.

    Aviva great for me.

Oodles of contents and building cover. Unlimited number of unspecified bikes covered to £1500 each away from home if locked to something ‘solid’. Added my Bird this year, also covered away from home.

£170 per annum. Sounds cheap compared to others.

the disc looked “fatter” than an old skool SLX

    Agree, it does look thicker.

Trying to locate a 140mm front IS mount which I could then pack out. Not luck so far…

Do you have a burr on the outside edge of the pads?

Valid point. It’s a bit early to tell (new pads, town use).

    Rustychain

I’ve been to see a chap who builds frames. The adaptor appears to be correct.

Can anyone signpost me to what the location of the IS mount should be so I can measure it up?

Thanks for all the responses BTW.

How do I tell the difference between a front and rear adaptor?

Now doubting myself about the orientation. The adaptor has an indication arrow which is pointing up. Should it be pointing down?

    Rustychain
    Free Member

The adaptor was upside down after the bike shop fitted it! That’s now corrected. 🙂

It’s an SLX rotor, so presumably compatible with the SLX caliper?:

    Thought I’d update on this.

We did this route in the end, and very nice it was too.
    http://www.pedalnorth.com/content/hambleton-hills-mtb

There was a good feed station not mentioned in the write up at about 1/3 of the way through – http://lordstones.com/

The only route issue was the section after the above eatery. Instead of heading off on the Cleveland Way as marked, just ride along Raisdale Road. The marked route comes back to the road anyway and you’ll miss a section of XC that was poorly marked, little used and blocked with fallen trees etc (ie not worth it).

I’ve had this same issue, but the problem was squeezing all the cogs on so the lock ring could get a good purchase.

As ‘gee’ suggests, it sounds like you may need a rear spacer if the cassette felt loose.

Be aware that rear spacers come in different thicknesses. I’ve just had a problem with loose cogs on my road bike. Turns out that the rear spacer that came with the hub was too thin. A slightly thicker spacer sorted the problem.

Thanks Terra, that routes looks great. I’ll see if I can download the GPX from the Garmin site.
