Having seen a water cooler bottle burst when dropped, I’d say definitely not. And I can’t imagine any garage being happy to see you fill one up.

Get a proper metal jerry can, they cost nothing compared to the petrol.

From my experience back then they did try and get as high as possible – amateurs that is. But then again they used to mash monster ratios.

    High saddle – check
    Monster gear – check

Being lumped together with the English must really pi$$ off the Welsh and Scottish

I long ago gave up trying to explain to US immigration officials that Wales isn’t in England.

As espoused by the coaches when I was a lad, ankling involved dropping the heel at the top of the stroke, to help push the pedal forward, then dropping the toe at the bottom of the stroke to pull the pedal backwards.
The mechanics of it are discussed at http://www.perfectcondition.ltd.uk/Articles/Pedalling/index.htm
Riding fixed was encouraged as a way of developing proper ankling technique instead of ‘pedalling square’.

Do you meet many people who describe themselves as English, Scottish and Welsh ?

Sawchain oil ? Now there’s an idea (for the chain anyway), I’ve got litres of the stuff.

Recommend you dont use 3 in 1

Why’s that ? A bit light for the chain I know, but I’ve used silicone based stuff in the past and it ends up with a layer of sludge that needs de-greasing.
Rock and Roll looks good, and I may try one of these wet lubes.

560 scandiums on my carbon fitness compensator, which feel much better to me than the 660s they replaced. But then I’m an ex roadie and spent most of my life on 42cm drops.

I once took part in the Hallaton bottle-kicking, in which two Rutland villages fight over 3 beer barrels, with lots of the old ultraviolence. The only rules are no eye-gouging, no strangling and no weapons. Someone kicked me in the nuts 10 minutes after the start and I never got nearer than 100 yards to the ‘bottle’.

I’ve found a cheap chain provider on eBay and so its not even worth all the hassle of sharpening them.

Jesus ! Do you buy a new bike every time you get a puncture as well ?
Dead easy to sharpen a chain once you have the right tools. Give it a quick once over after every time you use it and you’ve got a nice sharp saw all the time.

There is some talk of the Brechfa Blue/Black trails being closed due to some maintenance of the pipes next to the roads or something.

The work’s proceeding but they’ve managed to avoid actually closing the road, just traffic lights in various places. So everything’s open as usual.
Beautiful weather here at the moment as well.

They all have to be harder than a really hard thing just to be there in the first place.
But Schleck, A. does seem to have taken over from Cav as top toy thrower.

Ordered some shoes from their sale on Friday evening and the postie turned up with them this morning, saying ‘You get a lot of stuff from these Chain Reaction people don’t you, what’s that all about?’

So I told him I was building my own nuclear reactor.

Saddle bag ? You young whipper-snappers wouldn’t recognise a proper saddle bag if a CTC veteran hit you over the head with it.

Carradice Nelson long flap – just what you need for a 2 week youth hostelling tour of Devon and Cornwall.

IIRC someone posted recently saying the black route was closed due to roadworks on the approach road, so only the Golech (Red) trail was open.

Officially the routes out of Byrgwm are closed, according to the FC, in reality they’re all open and the road works are currently confined to some traffic lights between Nantyffin and Abergorlech.
Trails have dried out nicely, and the midges aren’t that bad. I was out on Monday night and didn’t get bitten once :-)

You can do drops / gaps on hardtails…. if you have the balls. And 99.9% of riders don’t.

I don’t even have the balls to look at those pictures – the 2nd one made me feel quite ill.

    Try :
Bryn Marlais, near Brechfa, 01267 202370
    Maesbach, Ffarmers, 01558 650650
Five Saints Riding Center, Pumpsaint, 01558 650580
    Pant Farm, Carmarthen, 01267 235665

Could also ask at Gilfach Wen near Brechfa, 07970 629726. They do bunkhouse accommodation but might let you park up.

How exactly would you improve on that???

    Simple, but effective.
Bit of a fail on the actual bike construction front though.

I vaguely remember that there was a UK pro who road one back in the 90’s, very briefly.
A very rigid and unforgiving ride – you could ride over a postage stamp and tell whether it was 1st or 2nd class.

if he is unable to overtake said vehicle then there isn’t a lot he can do…only the most pedantic organiser would take it as read…

The great Alf Engers was regularly suspended by the RTTC, not only for drafting behind vehicles, but also for overtaking them, as he was faster than some of the cars on the road at the time.

Which is as good an excuse as any for a retro TT picture – ‘King’ Alf in his pomp – note the holes drilled in everything, the huge chainring (57 x 12 top gear) and the aerodynamic, but rather suicidal, head position.

Don’t worry Steve, you’ll be fine on Monday (they’ll still be brewing their first cup of tea). It’s only when the road actually gets closed and you’re trying get to Abergorlech from Brechfa or Brygwm from Abergorlech that there will be problems.

Come to Abegorlech via Llansawel and it will be OK. Come to Brygwm via Nantgaredig and it will be OK except when the road is closed at the Gwernogle turn (which won’t be for a couple of weeks I think)

Don’t panic ! (unless you want to of course, in which case the locals will have the forest to themselves  )

Just had 3 days without broadband connectivity. All 6 houses in our hamlet lost it at the same time yet BT insisted to every one of them that their equipment was at fault. Connectivity restored to all 6 at exactly the same time yet BT still insist there was no fault at their end.
3 days spent being patronised by the Indian call-center, being asked the same irrelevant questions again and again, with none of them having any knowledge of any of the previous calls.
Tried to escalate to a supervisor but told that the supervisor was busy.
Eventually got a call from BT – the phone rang once, just one solitary ring. Not humanly possible to answer the phone that quick. It was BT leaving a message saying “We tried to contact you but got no answer”.

One neighbour, a lady of 70, was badgered into buying a new router she didn’t need and couldn’t afford, two others told they couldn’t be helped unless they signed up for a broadband support package, minimum cost £10 a month for 3 months.
    Crooks and liars all.

Except the engineers, who when they eventually turn up are excellent, and just as pissed off with BT as the customers.
